Chapter 7 - THE HIDDEN LETTER

I tore through the house. Every drawer. Every box. Every shelf. Every place Rachel might have hidden something important.
If she had written a letter—one final letter containing the truth—she would have hidden it somewhere safe. Somewhere meaningful. Somewhere only I would know to look.
I thought of the things she loved. Her garden. Her books. Her favorite painting. The box where she kept Mia’s baby things.
I pulled out Mia’s baby box. Inside were her first booties, her hospital bracelet, the blanket she had come home in. At the very bottom, beneath the blanket, was a sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front in Rachel’s handwriting.
My hands trembled as I lifted it. I sat on the floor, taking a moment to breathe, to steady myself, to prepare for whatever she had written.
I broke the seal and pulled out the letter.
*“My Dearest Adrian,*
*If you are reading this, it means I am gone. And it means she has finally done what she threatened to do.*
*Vanessa is my daughter. I gave her up when I was seventeen. I thought I was doing the right thing. I thought she would have a better life. But I never stopped loving her. I never stopped looking for her.*
*When she found me… I was so happy. I thought I had been given a second chance. I thought we could be a family. But she came back filled with nothing but rage. She believed I had abandoned her on purpose. She believed I had stolen the life that should have been hers. She demanded everything—my money, my home, my name. And when I told her I would not give her everything, that she needed to build her own life… she turned her anger toward Mia.*
*She said Mia had no right to what Vanessa had been denied. She said she would take everything from me. Including my daughter.*
*I wrote this because I am afraid. I am afraid she will do something terrible. I am afraid she will hurt me. And if I am gone… she will come for Mia next. She will try to take her. She will try to replace me. She will try to take my place in your life.*
*Do not let her. Do not trust her. She is angry and she is dangerous and she will say anything to get what she wants. She is my daughter… but she is not the daughter I wanted. She is the daughter my fear created.*
*Watch Mia closely. Guard her with your life. Do not let Vanessa near her. And if anything happens to me… know that I loved you both more than I can ever say. And know that I tried. I tried to fix the mistake I made long ago. But some mistakes cannot be fixed. They can only be survived.*
*I love you.*
*Rachel.”*
I folded the letter slowly and pressed it to my chest. Rachel had known. She had written everything down. She had tried to warn me. And I had married the very person she had feared most.
I stood up and walked to the window. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the lawn. Somewhere out there, Vanessa was preparing. She was preparing to take Mia. To take everything.
But she had made one fatal mistake.
She had underestimated Rachel.
Rachel had left the truth. She had left the evidence. And now… I would use it.
I picked up the phone and called Eleanor.
“I found it,” I said. “Rachel’s letter. Everything is in it.”

“Then we have what we need,” Eleanor said. “Be ready. The hearing is tomorrow. And Adrian… be careful. Vanessa will not go down without a fight.”
“I know,” I said. “But this time… she is not the only one holding the truth.”
