Chapter 5 - THE WARNING IGNORED

The next morning, I called Eleanor Voss.
Eleanor was Rachel’s oldest and dearest friend. They had grown up together, been through everything together. If anyone knew the truth about Rachel’s past… it would be her.
She answered on the second ring. “Adrian? It’s early. Is everything alright?”
“Eleanor, I need to ask you something. And I need you to tell me the truth. No matter what.”
She hesitated at the tone of my voice. “Of course. What is it?”
“Did Rachel have a daughter before she met me?”
Silence. Long, heavy silence.
“Eleanor?”
“Where did you hear that?” Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Is it true?”
Eleanor sighed—a long, trembling sound. “Yes.”
My heart sank. “She did.”
“Vanessa. Her name was Vanessa. Rachel was seventeen when she had her. She was still in high school. Her parents were furious. They made her give the baby up for adoption. They told her it was for the best. That she could start over.” Eleanor paused. “Rachel never stopped looking for her. She hired investigators. She spent years searching. But she never found her. Or so she thought.”
“Until she found her herself,” I said quietly. “In the hospital room. On the day Mia was born.”
“How do you know that?”
“I have a photograph. And I have DNA results. Vanessa found Rachel. But she didn’t tell her who she was. Not at first. She just… appeared. And Rachel figured it out. And she wrote a warning.”
“Adrian… what warning?”
“On the back of that photograph. If anything ever happens to me, do not let Vanessa near Mia.”
Eleanor gasped. “Oh God.”
“Eleanor… did Rachel fear her own daughter?”
“She did. Because once Vanessa knew who Rachel was… she demanded everything. She demanded the money Rachel’s parents had left her. She demanded a place in our family. She demanded to be part of Mia’s life. And when Rachel tried to take things slowly, to get to know her first… Vanessa threatened her.” Eleanor’s voice shook. “Rachel told me. She said Vanessa was angry. Bitter. That she believed Rachel owed her everything.”
“And then Rachel died.”
“Two months later,” Eleanor said quietly. “Two months after she wrote that warning.”
I gripped the phone. “Natural causes.”
“That’s what they said. But Rachel had been fine. She had a checkup just weeks before. The doctor said she was healthier than ever. And then… she was gone.” Eleanor paused. “I asked her—just days before she died—I asked her if she was afraid. She said… she said she didn’t think Vanessa would hurt her. She thought she just needed time. But she was wrong, Adrian. She was wrong.”
My blood ran cold. “You think Vanessa killed her.”
“I think Rachel was terrified. And I think she wrote that warning because she knew she was in danger.” Eleanor took a breath. “And then you married her. Adrian… of all the people in the world… you married the woman Rachel feared most.”
“I didn’t know,” I said, my voice breaking. “She told me they met at a charity event. She told me she had no family. She told me everything except the truth.”
“She knew exactly who you were,” Eleanor said. “She knew you were married to her mother. She knew you had money. She knew you had a daughter—her half-sister.”
“And she came for them.”
“She came for everything Rachel had. Including Mia.” Eleanor paused. “Adrian… be very careful. Vanessa didn’t come here to be a sister. She came here to take what she believes was stolen from her.”
I looked at the empty doorway. “She already tried once. To switch Mia’s medicine. To frame Clara. To make it look like I couldn’t care for her properly.”
“And when that didn’t work…” Eleanor’s voice dropped lower. “She will try something else.”
“I know.”
“Then you need to be ready. Because she won’t stop. Not until she has Mia.”
I hung up the phone and walked to the window. The sun was rising, casting long shadows across the lawn. Somewhere out there, Vanessa was waiting. Planning. Watching.
She had been one step ahead of us all along. She had married me. She had lived in my home. She had gained my trust. And all the while… she had been waiting for the right moment to take what she believed was hers.
But she had made one mistake.
She had underestimated Rachel.
Rachel had known. She had written that warning. She had left us a clue. And now… I would not let her sacrifice be in vain.

I picked up the photograph, running my thumb over Rachel’s handwriting. If anything ever happens to me, do not let Vanessa near Mia.
“I won’t,” I whispered to the empty room. “I promise.”
