Chapter 8 - THE HEARING

The courtroom was packed. Reporters. Spectators. People who had heard whispers of the story and come to watch.
Vanessa sat at the plaintiff’s table. She looked composed. Elegant. Perfectly put together. She wore a dark suit and looked at me with eyes that held no remorse, no shame—only cold, calculated purpose.
When the judge entered, everyone stood. He called the hearing to order.
“Before we begin,” Judge Mercer said, looking between us. “Custody hearings are private matters. I expect decorum and respect. Let us proceed.”
Vanessa’s lawyer stood. “Your Honor, we are here to request emergency temporary custody of Mia Holloway. The child’s father, Adrian Holloway, has demonstrated an inability to provide for her safety. On the morning of a school field trip, Mia Holloway’s emergency medication was tampered with. Mr. Holloway failed to notice the tampering. He failed to protect his daughter. And when a teacher attempted to intervene, Mr. Holloway sided with the teacher—accusing his own wife of a crime—without a shred of evidence.”
He turned to gesture at Vanessa. “Meanwhile, Vanessa Holloway—the child’s stepmother and biological half-sister—has been unjustly accused and cast out of her own home. She has a right to be part of her sister’s life. And she is the only person who can keep Mia safe from Mr. Holloway’s negligence.”
The judge looked at me. “Mr. Holloway? Your response?”
Eleanor stood beside me. “Your Honor, this entire petition is based on lies. And we have the evidence to prove it.”
She laid the bus camera footage on the stand. She laid out the DNA request form. She laid out the expired medication. She laid out the photograph from the hospital room.
And finally… she laid out Rachel’s letter.
The courtroom fell silent as Eleanor spoke.
“Vanessa Holloway—formerly Vanessa Vance—is not merely Mia’s stepmother. She is Mia’s biological half-sister. She is the daughter of Rachel Holloway, from a relationship before her marriage to Adrian. Rachel found her daughter shortly before Mia was born. And from the very beginning… Vanessa threatened her. She demanded money. She threatened Mia. And Rachel Holloway wrote this letter—two days before she died—warning exactly what Vanessa would do.”
Eleanor placed the letter before the judge. He read it slowly. His expression changed with every word.
When he finished, he looked up at Vanessa.
“Ms. Holloway. Is this true?”
Vanessa stood up, her composure cracking. “This is a fabrication! My mother wrote no such letter! Adrian forged it to get rid of me!”
“Handwriting analysis has already been performed,” Eleanor said calmly. “It is Rachel’s handwriting. Witnesses have confirmed it. And the DNA results confirm the relationship. You are Rachel’s daughter. And you knew exactly who Mia was.”
Vanessa’s face flushed with anger. “I did what was right! Rachel abandoned me! She gave me away and forgot I existed! And then she had Mia! Perfect little Mia! With a perfect husband! A perfect life! While I grew up in foster care! While I suffered!”
“So you married your mother’s husband?” the judge asked quietly. “You entered this home under false pretenses? You tampered with your sister’s medication? You framed an innocent woman?”
“I was taking what was mine!” Vanessa shouted, standing up. “Everything Rachel had… it should have been mine! The house! The money! The family! And Mia… Mia should have been raised by someone who understood what it meant to suffer! Not by him!” She pointed at me. “Not by the man who stole my mother and my future!”
“Ms. Holloway,” the judge said sternly. “Sit down.”
Vanessa ignored him. She turned to face me, her eyes blazing with hatred. “You think you won? You think a letter changes anything? Rachel is gone! I am all Mia has left of her real family!”
“Mia has me,” I said, standing up. “She has her brother. She has people who love her. People who would never hurt her.”
“You don’t know what love is!” Vanessa screamed. “You took everything from me! And now I will take everything from you!”
“Enough!” Judge Mercer banged his gavel. “This hearing is adjourned. Based on the evidence presented—including the video footage, the medical tampering, the threats, and the late Rachel Holloway’s sworn warning—I am denying the petition for custody. Restraining order granted. Vanessa Holloway is to have no contact with Mia or Adrian Holloway. And we will be referring this matter to the district attorney for criminal charges.”
Vanessa stared at him, stunned. Then she turned back to me. Her voice dropped to a terrifying whisper.
“This isn’t over. You haven’t found everything. Rachel kept secrets too. There is more. And when it comes out… you will wish you had never found that letter.”
The judge banged his gavel again. “Remove her.”

Two officers stepped forward. Vanessa allowed herself to be led away, but she looked back at me one last time. Her eyes burned with a hatred so deep it sent chills down my spine.
There was more. She had said so. And I knew in my bones… she was telling the truth.
