Chapter 4 - THE HALF-TRUTH

I sat there for a long time, staring at nothing.
Vanessa was Rachel’s daughter. Which meant… Vanessa was Mia’s older half-sister.
I thought of everything—the hospital room photograph, Rachel’s warning, the DNA request, the switched medication. None of it made sense. And yet… all of it fit.
If Vanessa was Rachel’s daughter from before her marriage to me… then everything changed.
I stood up abruptly and walked to the bookshelf. I pulled down the boxes I had kept stored away since Rachel’s death—letters, old journals, family records. I spread them across the floor, searching frantically.
Rachel had never mentioned a child. Never. She had told me about her parents, her childhood, her first marriage that had ended in divorce years before we met. But she had never… not once… spoken of a daughter.
I found her old address book. I flipped through the pages until I found the section labeled Family. There were names, dates, relationships I recognized. Nothing else.
I pulled out her journals. I flipped to the year before Mia was born. The year before we married. Entries about work, about us, about the house we were planning to buy. No mention of a previous pregnancy. No mention of a child given away. No mention of a daughter named Vanessa.
And yet… the DNA did not lie. Dr. Hale had said it clearly: 99.9% probability they shared the same mother.
I picked up the photograph again. Rachel in the hospital bed. Vanessa standing beside her. Younger. Watching. If anything ever happens to me, do not let Vanessa near Mia.
Rachel had known Vanessa was her daughter. She had known. And she had feared what she might do.
I stood up and walked down the hall. Ethan was sitting in the living room, watching television with the volume low. He looked up when I entered.
“Dad?”
“I need to talk to you,” I said. “About before. About Rachel.”
Ethan sat up straighter. “Okay.”
“Did she ever… ever… mention having another child? Before Mia?”
Ethan frowned. “No. Why would she?”
“Did she ever mention a daughter from a relationship before she met me?”
“No. She and you were together since… well, since before I can remember properly. She was always just… Rachel. Mia’s mom.”
“Did she ever talk about her own childhood? About family she had lost? About giving a child up for adoption?”
Ethan thought for a moment, then slowly shook his head. “Not that I remember. She said her parents died young. That she had no siblings. That she was alone in the world until she met you.”
Alone. Except for the daughter she had never told me about.
I walked back to the study and picked up the phone again. I called Dr. Hale back.
“Mr. Holloway?”
“Vanessa Vance,” I said. “That was the name on the reference sample. Is that her maiden name?”
“I’m not at liberty to say—”
“Please. If she is who I think she is… she is my late wife’s daughter. Which makes her Mia’s sister. And she has been living in my house, married to me, under a false name. If that is true… I need to know everything.”
Dr. Hale inhaled sharply. “Married to me?”
“Yes.”
Silence stretched. Then Dr. Hale spoke, her voice quiet and urgent.
“Mr. Holloway… the sample from Vanessa Vance was not submitted recently. It was submitted seven years ago. Alongside a sample from Rachel Holloway. The results at that time confirmed—99.9% probability—Vanessa Vance is the biological daughter of Rachel Holloway.”
My breath caught.
“Rachel Holloway submitted her own sample?” I asked. “To confirm Vanessa was her daughter?”
“It appears so. And then… nothing. No further action. No follow-up. Until now—when Vanessa submitted Mia’s sample for comparison.”
“Why?” I whispered. “Why marry me? Why live in my house? Why wait until now to test Mia?”
“I cannot answer that,” Dr. Hale said. “But I will tell you this—if Vanessa Vance is indeed the biological daughter of your late wife… then she has an interest in your estate, your assets, and perhaps custody of your daughter.”
The words hit me like a physical blow.
Custody.
She had tried to switch the pouch. She had tried to frame Clara. She had been building a case that I was unfit, perhaps? That I couldn’t be trusted with Mia’s care?
And then… step in as the biological sister. Take Mia. Take everything.
I hung up the phone and walked to the window. Darkness had fallen. The house was quiet. Somewhere out there, Vanessa was gone. But she would be back. Or she would send someone. Or she would file papers.
She had married me. Her own mother’s husband. She had lived under my roof. She had watched me raise Mia. And all along… she had been waiting.
Waiting for Rachel’s warning to be forgotten. Waiting to claim what she believed was hers.

I looked at the photograph one last time. Rachel, holding Mia, with Vanessa standing in the shadows. Rachel had known. She had written that warning. She had known exactly what her daughter was capable of.
And she had been right to fear her.
