Chapter 11 - THE UNBORN CHILD

I drove home in a daze. The world felt different—sharper, darker, more twisted than I had ever imagined.
Rachel had been pregnant. She had been carrying our baby. And she had never told me.
Why? Why keep something like that from me? We had been happy. We had talked about having more children. She had no reason to hide it. Unless… she hadn’t known how to tell me. Unless she had been afraid. Unless Vanessa had threatened her.
I walked into the house and went straight to Rachel’s desk. I pulled out every drawer, emptied every folder, searched every envelope. There had to be something. A note. A calendar. A doctor’s appointment card. Anything.
And then I found it. Tucked between the pages of her favorite book, a small folded ultrasound photo. Faint, blurry, dated two days before she died. And on the back, written in Rachel’s handwriting: Our little secret. I’ll tell him tonight. I was so afraid Vanessa would find out.
My knees gave way. I sank onto the floor, clutching the photograph to my chest. She had been going to tell me. She had planned to tell me that very evening. And then she had died.
Vanessa had killed her before she could share the news. She had murdered her own mother to keep that pregnancy a secret.
But why? What difference would another child have made?
Then I understood.
If Rachel had given birth to another child… that child would have been her legal heir. Along with Mia and Vanessa. But if Rachel died without knowing she was pregnant… without updating her will… everything would pass to her existing children. To Mia. And to Vanessa. Unless… unless there was no other heir.
Vanessa had killed Rachel before she could rewrite her will. Before she could provide for the new baby. Before she could change anything to keep Vanessa from inheriting what she believed she was owed.
And then… she had married me. To take control of everything. To be Mia’s guardian. To claim it all.
I stood up slowly, the pieces falling into place one by one, each one more terrible than the last.
Vanessa had threatened Rachel. She had poisoned her. She had sealed the autopsy report. She had married me under a false name. She had tried to harm Mia. She had filed for custody. She had lied, cheated, and killed her way into my life.
And she had almost gotten away with it.
Almost.
May you like
Because Rachel had left clues. In photographs. In letters. In journals. In the medical report she had tried to hide.
And now… I would use every single one of them to make sure she never hurt anyone again.
