Chapter 20 - THE LAST GOODBYE

It was spring again. The tulips were blooming. Exactly where the girls had planted them all those years ago.
I stood by Clara’s grave. Olivia stood on one side. Lily on the other. James stood behind us.
I placed fresh flowers on the stone.
“We did it, Clara,” I said quietly. “We survived. We healed. We became better. Your girls are wonderful. They are strong. They are kind. They are exactly who you hoped they would be.”
Olivia placed her hand on the headstone. “I miss you, Mama. Every day.”
Lily placed a drawing there. “I brought you this. Us. All together.”
James stepped forward and placed a single rose. “Rest easy, Clara. We’ve got them.”
We stood there together. Four people bound by love and loss. By secrets revealed and truths uncovered. By a tragedy that nearly destroyed us… and a bond that held us together.
I looked up at the blue sky. At the garden. At my family.
Clara’s son—the one we lost—would always be with us. In every tulip. In every sunrise. In Olivia’s courage and Lily’s heart.
And Vanessa—Elena—was part of us too. In the lessons we learned. In the forgiveness we found. In the promise that even the most broken person can finally tell the truth.
I took Olivia’s hand in my left. Lily’s in my right. James stood close beside me.
“Let’s go home,” I said.
And together, we walked back toward the house. Toward the light. Toward the future. Toward the life we had fought so hard to build.
We were scarred. We were changed. We were different than before.
May you like
But we were whole.
And we were home.
