Chapter 13 - THE GIRL WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

The weeks before the trial were the hardest. Reporters camped outside the gates. Strangers wrote letters. Rumors flew. But inside the house, life settled into a quiet rhythm.
Olivia became my partner in everything. She helped me sort through old documents. She listened when I practiced my statements. She sat beside me and said nothing, just held my hand, when the weight of it all became too much.
One evening, as we sat on the porch watching the sunset, she spoke.
“Dad… was Mama Clara like me?”
I looked at her—at her sharp eyes, her steady courage, her quiet strength.
“She was exactly like you,” I said. “Smart. Brave. And she always knew the truth before anyone else did.”
Olivia smiled. “That’s why she knew about Vanessa. And that’s why I did too.”
“Exactly,” I said. “You saw what everyone else was too busy to see. You watched. You listened. And you remembered.”
“Vanessa said Mama Clara was going to tell her something,” Olivia said. “Something important.”
I nodded. “She was going to give her a chance. To be part of our family. To make things right.”
Olivia thought for a moment. “If she had taken it… would everything have been different?”
I considered the question. “Maybe. Maybe not. But Clara believed in second chances. And she believed people could change.”
“Can people change?” Olivia asked.
I looked out at the garden. At the place where everything had started.
“Some can,” I said. “And some… can only admit they were wrong. But even that… is a start.”
Olivia leaned her head on my shoulder. “I’m glad Mama Clara knew. And I’m glad I knew too. We protected you. Just like we promised.”
May you like
My throat tightened. “Yes. You did. You saved us all, Olivia. Never forget that.”
She squeezed my hand. “I won’t.”
