Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH SET FREE

The weeks that followed were a blur of activity. Vanessa’s case dominated the news. Every detail came out—her true identity, the revenge plot, the confession, the attempted murder. Elias admitted to the bribery and testified against her. The full truth was laid bare for the world to see.

And slowly, the public tide turned. I went from being an accused murderer to a man betrayed by a woman he had trusted. But I didn’t care about public opinion. I cared about my girls.

Olivia handled it with a wisdom beyond her years. She went back to school. She stood tall. She held her head high. But sometimes at night, I’d find her sitting by Clara’s photograph, talking to it quietly.

Lily bounced back faster. She was young enough to let the fear fade. But she too became quieter. More watchful. She clung to Olivia, and to me, and to James.

One afternoon, about six weeks after everything happened, I gathered them all in the living room. Robert. James. Marta. Olivia. Lily.

“I have something to say,” I told them. “To all of you. I failed. I let a dangerous woman into this house. I didn’t see what was happening right in front of me. And I put my children in danger.”

I looked at Olivia. “You saw the truth. You tried to warn me. And I almost didn’t believe you. For that… I am so sorry. You were braver than any adult in this house.”

Olivia walked over and took my hand. “You believed us in the end. That’s what matters.”

I looked at James. “You protected my family when I couldn’t. You stood by us. And I will never forget it.”

James nodded. “We’re family, Adrian. We stand together.”

I turned back to everyone. “Vanessa is gone. She will spend the rest of her life paying for what she did. But we cannot let her hate poison us. We will heal. We will move forward. And we will do it together.”

That night, I took the girls to Clara’s grave. I brought flowers. And I told them everything. About the baby. About the name. About how Clara had known and was going to give Vanessa a chance.

Olivia placed her silver locket on the headstone.

“She’s with him now,” Olivia said. “Mama Clara and the baby. They’re together.”

Lily placed a daisy beside it. “Tell him we love him.”

I knelt beside the grave. “I will find out who my father really was,” I promised Clara silently. “I will undo the wrongs he did. And I will raise our children to be better than him. Better than all of this.”

As we walked back to the car, the sun was setting. Golden light spilled across the grass. Olivia held my hand. Lily held James’s hand. Marta walked ahead.

We were scarred. We were changed. But we were together. And that was enough.
