Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE

I visited Vanessa in jail two days later.

She looked different. Her hair was pulled back simply. She wore a plain orange jumpsuit. No jewelry. No makeup. She looked tired. And older.

When she saw me, she sat down slowly.

“You’re here to gloat,” she said.

“I’m here to tell you something,” I said. “I’ve been digging. Into my father. Into your brother. Into everything that happened twenty years ago.”

Vanessa stiffened. “And?”

“And you were right. About everything. My father destroyed your family. He stole your business. He pushed your brother until he had nothing left. I found the records. I found the witnesses. I found the proof.”

Tears filled her eyes. But she said nothing.

“I’m fixing it,” I continued. “I’m returning the property. I’m restoring the business name. I’m setting up a foundation in your brother’s name. Every wrong my father did… I’m going to undo it. One by one.”

Vanessa stared at me. “Why?”

“Because it was the right thing to do. Because your brother deserved justice. And because Clara would have wanted it.”

She looked away, her hands trembling in her lap. “I destroyed everything. My life. Your wife. Your baby. All for something you’re giving back freely.”

“Revenge destroys the one carrying it,” I said quietly. “My father taught you that. And you let it consume you.”

She looked at me then, tears spilling over. “I wanted to make him pay. I wanted your family to feel what we felt. But then… I fell in love with you. With the girls. With the life we had. And I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t hurt you. Not really. So I waited. And I hoped. And then Lily asked about Clara. And everything fell apart.”

“I know,” I said. “I know you loved them. And I know you’re sorry.”

Vanessa leaned forward, her voice desperate. “Let me testify. Let me tell the world what your father did. Help me clear my name—partially. I don’t want to be remembered as just a killer. I want them to know why.”

I considered it. Robert had warned me against it. That it could create sympathy. That it could confuse the jury. But looking at her… broken, defeated, finally honest… I knew what I had to do.

“I’ll allow it,” I said. “But you must tell the full truth. Every crime. Every lie. Every mistake. You take responsibility for your choices. And the jury will decide.”

Vanessa nodded. “I will. I swear it. I’ll tell them everything. From the beginning to the end. And then… whatever happens… happens.”

I stood up to leave. At the door, I paused.

“Vanessa… Clara was going to forgive you. She knew who you were. And she was going to give you a chance. Don’t waste the rest of your life carrying hate. Find peace. Even in there.”

She didn’t answer. But as I walked out, I saw her bow her head. And I heard her whisper, so quiet I almost missed it.

“Thank you.”
