Chapter 19 - THE GIRLS GROW

Years passed. Seasons changed. The girls grew.

Olivia became a lawyer. She fought for families. For justice. For people who had no voice. She carried Clara’s locket everywhere she went. And she was brave. Always.

Lily became an artist. She painted the garden. She painted Clara. She painted us. She saw beauty where others saw only pain. And she filled our lives with color.

James grew older. His hair turned silver. But he still walked the grounds each morning. He still checked the gates. He still stood watch. And when he finally retired… he didn’t leave. He moved into the guest wing. He stayed with us. Because this was his home.

I visited Vanessa once. Years later. She was old. Gray. Bent. But her eyes were clear.

“I hear Olivia is a lawyer,” she said.

“She is.”

“And Lily?”

“She paints. She’s happy.”

Vanessa smiled. “Good. That’s all I ever wanted for them. Happiness.”

We sat in silence for a long time.

“Elena,” I said finally. “I forgive you.”

She closed her eyes. A single tear slipped down her cheek.

“Thank you,” she whispered. “That is the only thing I ever truly wanted.”

I stood up to leave.

“Adrian?”

“Yes?”

“Tell them… I loved them. Even when I shouldn’t have.”

“I will,” I said.

And I walked out. Free. At peace.
