Chapter 6 - THE SECRET MY WIFE TOOK TO THE GRAVE

The room went silent.

Rain hammered against the roof. Somewhere far away, thunder rumbled.

I stared at my sister. I had expected lies. I had expected excuses. I had not expected this.

“Your son?” I said quietly. “Lucas? Silas has Lucas?”

Elena nodded. She sank into the chair, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

“He took him three weeks ago. Said he was going to a summer camp. But there is no camp. Adrian… he called me yesterday. He told me if I didn’t give him Sophie… I would never see Lucas alive again. He said… he said he would send me his heart in a box.”

I felt sick.

Silas wasn’t just threatening me. He was holding an innocent child hostage. He was forcing my own sister to betray us, using her son’s life as leverage.

I sat down across from her. The anger drained out of me, replaced by a cold, heavy dread.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Elena looked up, her face streaked with tears.

“Because he was listening. He bugged my phone. He bugged my house. If I had told you… he would have killed Lucas immediately. He said I had to deliver Sophie to him. Or Lucas dies.”

She reached across the table and grabbed my hand. Her grip was desperate.

“I never wanted to hurt Sophie. I love her like she was my own. But what was I supposed to do? Choose between my niece and my son? I couldn’t do it, Adrian. I couldn’t choose.”

I squeezed her hand.

“I know. And I don’t blame you. Silas is a monster. He forces people to do terrible things.”

I thought about what she had told me. The document. My wife. Silas being an imposter.

“Elena… what exactly did my wife hide?”

Elena took a deep breath.

“Before she died… she told me she had discovered something. She found old records. Birth certificates. Adoption papers. She realized Silas Hale was not the man he claimed to be. He had stolen the identity of a dying boy decades ago. He took his name, his family, his fortune. And he killed anyone who found out.”

My blood ran cold.

“She hid the proof somewhere safe. Somewhere Silas would never look. And she left instructions that only Sophie could unlock it when she turned eighteen. She said… she said Silas would try to kill Sophie to get it back. And she made me promise… to protect her at all costs.”

Elena pulled a folded piece of paper from her pocket and slid it across the table to me.

“This is what Silas wants. This is the key. Your wife left half the combination with you. Half with me. And the final piece… with Sophie.”

I unfolded the paper. Scrawled in my wife’s beautiful handwriting was a single date.

*The day we brought her home.*

Sophie’s birthday.

My heart skipped a beat.

“It’s a combination,” I whispered. “To a safe deposit box.”

Elena nodded.

“Everything is in there. The proof. The documents. The truth about Silas. Your wife hid it all. And she knew… she knew Silas would come for it eventually.”

I stood up. The pieces were finally falling into place.

Silas didn’t want Sophie dead just to steal an inheritance. He wanted her dead because she held the key to his destruction. She was the only person in the world who could expose him.

And he had been hunting her since the day she was born.

“He’s going to kill both children,” I said quietly. “Sophie and Lucas. As soon as he gets what he wants… he’ll kill them both to tie up loose ends.”

Elena’s face went white.

“Then we have to hurry. He told me to bring Sophie to him tonight. Or he kills Lucas at midnight.”

I looked at the clock on the wall.

9:45 PM.

Two hours and fifteen minutes.

I looked at Elena.

“We’re not bringing Sophie to him. We’re bringing him the truth. And we’re bringing him down.”

Elena stood up slowly. She wiped the tears from her face. Her eyes hardened.

“What do you want me to do?”

I thought quickly.

“Call him. Tell him you have Sophie. Tell him you’re ready to make the trade. Tell him to meet you at the old warehouse district. Alone.”

Elena hesitated.

“He won’t come alone, Adrian. He never goes anywhere without guards.”

“Good,” I said. “Because we won’t be alone either.”

I pulled out my phone and called Martin.

“Get your team. Get the authorities. Get everything we have. We’re going to end this tonight.”

I looked at Elena.

“Tell him to meet us at midnight. And Elena… tell him to bring Lucas. Or we destroy the key.”

Elena picked up her phone. Her hands shook as she dialed.

“Silas? It’s me. I have Sophie. I’m ready to make the trade. Meet me at the docks. Midnight. Bring Lucas. Or I burn everything.”

She listened for a moment. Then she hung up.

“He’s coming,” she said. “He’s bringing Lucas. But he said… if anything goes wrong… he’ll kill Lucas first.”

I looked at the clock.

9:52 PM.

Two hours and eight minutes.

I walked to the door. Rain poured down outside.

“Then we make sure nothing goes wrong,” I said. “We get Lucas. We get Sophie’s key. We get the truth. And we put Silas Hale behind bars for the rest of his life.”

May you like

Elena stood up beside me.

“Or we die trying.”
