Chapter 14 - THE FINAL ORDER

We sat in the apartment kitchen until dawn.

Martin told me everything.

How Silas had taken him from his mother when he was a baby. How he had been raised in secret, told that he was born for one purpose — to serve Silas. How he had been placed in my life as a friend, a protector, a spy. How he had watched me marry, watched me have Sophie, watched me build a life — all while waiting for the order to destroy it.

And then he told me about Lily.

“My daughter was born three years ago,” Martin said, his voice breaking. “I hid her. I kept her away from Silas. But he found out. He took her. And he told me… the day Sophie dies… Lily lives. If I fail… Lily dies.”

He looked at me.

“I have wanted to tell you for years. Every time I looked at you… I saw the brother I was never allowed to know. Every time I held Sophie… I thought of Lily. And I hated myself for what I had to do.”

I put my hand on his shoulder.

“You didn’t have a choice. But you have one now. Help me. Help me save Lily. Help me save Sophie. And together… we will make sure Silas never hurts anyone ever again.”

Martin nodded slowly. A new light kindled in his eyes. Hope.

“Silas is moving Lily tonight,” he said. “He’s transferring her to a safe house outside the city. He said… once I deliver Sophie to him… he will release Lily there.”

“Then that is where we go,” I said. “We intercept the transfer. We get Lily. And we use her to force Silas to confess everything.”

Martin hesitated.

“Adrian… Silas expects you to come. He is setting a trap. If we go… we walk straight into it.”

“Then we spring the trap,” I said. “And we make sure it closes on him instead.”

We spent the day preparing.

Martin contacted Silas one last time. He told him I had agreed to the trade. That I would bring Sophie alone. That we would arrive at midnight.

Silas replied with a single text: Good. Bring the girl. And watch your brother die for his betrayal.

Martin showed me the message. His jaw tightened.

“He knows.”

“He knows you’re on our side?”

“He knows everything,” Martin said. “He always does. Which means… he never intended to let Lily live. Or me. Or you. Or Sophie. He intended to kill all of us tonight.”

“Then we make sure he is the only one who dies,” I said.

Midnight.

The safe house stood alone at the edge of the woods. Dark. Isolated. Surrounded by high stone walls and iron gates.

Martin and I approached from the treeline. We had called in every loyal officer we could trust. They were in position. Hidden. Waiting for the signal.

We stood at the edge of the trees, watching the house.

“Lily is inside,” Martin whispered. “In the basement. Under heavy guard.”

“And Silas?”

“He’s there too,” Martin said. “He left the jail on medical furlough this afternoon. Heart condition. He is inside. Waiting for us.”

My blood ran cold.

Silas had manipulated the system one last time. He had gotten himself released. And he had come here to finish what he started.

“He knows we’re coming,” I said.

“Yes.”

“Then let’s go say hello.”

We walked up to the front gate. It stood open. As if inviting us in.

We walked through. Up the steps. To the front door.

I pushed it open.

The living room was empty. Except for one person.

Silas sat in an armchair by the fireplace. He looked pale. Tired. But his eyes burned with that same terrifying fire.

He looked at me. Then at Martin.

“Finally,” Silas said. “The whole family together.”

He gestured to the empty chairs across from him.

“Sit. We have much to discuss.”

I stood in the doorway. Martin stood beside me.

“Where are the girls?” I demanded.

Silas smiled.

“Safe. For now. Sit down, Adrian. Don’t be rude. After all… I am your father.”

I stepped forward. Martin followed. We sat down.

Silas looked at Martin.

“You were always my favorite, you know. Obedient. Loyal. Strong. And then he came along… and you betrayed me.”

“I did not betray you,” Martin said. “I finally saw you for what you are. A monster.”

Silas laughed. A dry, rattling sound.

“I am a survivor. And you two… you are weak. Just like your mother. Just like everyone who ever stood in my way.”

He leaned forward.

“Here is what will happen. Martin will stay here. He will take his own life. As punishment for his betrayal. Then Adrian will bring me Sophie. And I will give you Lily. And then… Adrian will leave. And never return.”

“Or?” I said.

Silas reached into his pocket. He pulled out a small remote.

“Or I press this. And the basement explodes. Both girls. Gone.”

Martin stood up.

“Father… please… she is your great-granddaughter.”

Silas looked at him with pure disgust.

“I have no family. I have only power. And anyone who threatens that power… ceases to exist.”

He looked at me.

“Choose, Adrian. Your brother’s life. Or your daughter’s. Or the little girl Martin loves. Pick one. And be quick. My patience is wearing thin.”
