Chapter 16 - THE EVIDENCE THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING

I didn’t waste a second.
I called the lead tactical commander.
“Move on the safe house immediately,” I said. “Silas’s men are on their way. Protect Sophie at all costs. If anyone approaches… shoot to kill.”
“Understood, sir. Units rolling now.”
I hung up and drove like a maniac toward the safe house.
My mind raced. Martin was dead. Lily was still trapped. Silas had Sophie’s location. Everything was falling apart.
But then I remembered.
Martin had known Silas would kill him. He had known the risk. And before he stayed behind to buy me time… he had pressed something into my hand.
A small, encrypted USB drive.
“Everything is here,” he had whispered. “All the records. All the bank accounts. Every crime. Every order. Every name on his payroll. I spent twenty years collecting it. Waiting for the right moment.”
“If I don’t make it,” he had said, “you finish it. You expose him. And you give Lily and Sophie the future we never had.”
I pulled the drive from my pocket. My hands trembled.
Martin had given me the weapon.
Silas had killed him. But Martin had taken Silas’s empire with him.
I plugged the drive into my laptop.
Files opened. Thousands of them. Audio recordings. Emails. Bank transfers. Contracts. Names. Dates. Crimes spanning four decades.
And then I found it.
A video file. Timestamped three days earlier. Recorded from inside Silas’s private study.
I clicked play.
Silas sat at his desk. He spoke clearly into the camera.
*“If you are watching this… I am dead. Or in prison. Or I have failed. Listen carefully. Everything I have done… I did for power. There is no excuse. There is no justification. I stole identities. I killed people. I built my fortune on blood. And I leave nothing to my sons. Nothing to my granddaughter. Every dollar. Every property. Every asset. Is to be burned. Destroyed. So that no one can ever use it to hurt anyone again.”*
Silas paused. He looked directly into the camera.
*“Tell my sons… I was wrong. Tell them… I envied them. Because they had something I never had. A chance to be better. Tell them… do not become me.”*
He signed off.
I sat there in stunned silence.
Silas had known. He had known he would lose. He had prepared this confession. And he had given it to Martin.
Martin had carried it all this time. Waiting.
And then I found one final file.
A letter. Written in Martin’s handwriting. Addressed to me.
*Brother,*
*If you are reading this… I am gone. I recorded Silas’s final confession myself. He dictated it to me the day he took Lily. He knew he would not survive this. And in the end… he wanted to be held accountable.*
*Lily is in the hidden room beneath the basement. Not the main cell. The second door on the left. Combination: 0417. Sophie’s birthday. He told me himself. He wanted her to be found.*
*Do not hate Silas. Hate what he became. But do not let the darkness take you too. Be better than him. Be better than all of us.*
*Protect Sophie. Protect Lily. And tell them… we tried.*
*Your brother,*
*Martin.*
Tears blurred my vision.
Martin had left me everything. The evidence. The confession. The location of the girls.
Silas thought he was playing chess alone. But Martin had been moving the pieces all along.
I looked up at the road ahead.
The safe house was still miles away. But I knew where I needed to go.
I called the tactical commander again.
“Change of plans. Secure the girls first. Combination 0417. Second door on the left beneath the basement. And arrest Silas. Alive if possible. But do not let him speak to anyone. I have everything I need to put him away forever.”
“Copy that, sir. Moving in.”
I ended the call.
I looked at the USB drive in my hand.

Martin had given me justice.
Now I had to give him peace.
