Chapter 5 - THE BETRAYAL CLOSEST TO HOME

I moved fast.
I grabbed Sophie from her bed, wrapped her in her blanket, and carried her out the back door into the pouring rain. She woke up confused and frightened, clutching my shirt, but I didn’t stop to explain. I ran.
I didn’t know who was watching. I didn’t know how many men Silas had sent. I only knew that we were no longer safe here.
I drove through the rain for nearly an hour before I finally slowed down. Sophie was asleep again in the backseat, exhausted by fear and the late hour.
I pulled over near a gas station and called Martin. He answered on the first ring, his voice alert and tense.
“Adrian? Where are you?”
“Silas found the safe house,” I said quietly. “He was there. He threatened me. And someone was watching the window. Someone recorded everything.”
Martin swore under his breath.
“That’s impossible. Only three people knew that address. Me. You. And…”
He stopped.
We both knew.
“Elena,” I finished for him. My chest felt tight. “Elena was the third person.”
Elena. My sister. The woman I had trusted more than anyone in the world. The woman I had helped raise Sophie after her mother died. The woman I had told everything.
She had known where we were. She had known the security codes. She had known exactly what files I had on Silas.
And she had told him.
I gripped the steering wheel until my hands ached.
“Why?” I whispered. “She’s my sister. Why would she do this?”
“I don’t know,” Martin said. “But I’m going to find out. Adrian… meet me at my office. Come alone. Leave Sophie somewhere safe. We need to talk.”
I hung up.
I dropped Sophie off at a friend’s house — someone completely unconnected to this mess — and drove straight to Martin’s office. My mind was spinning. How could Elena betray me? How could she hand my daughter over to a man who wanted her dead?
I walked into Martin’s office. He was standing by the window, looking out at the rain. He turned when he heard me enter. His face was grave.
“I found it,” Martin said. He handed me a stack of bank records. “Look at the deposits.”
I looked.
Every month, for the past two years, a large sum of money had been deposited into Elena’s account.
From Silas Hale.
Thousands of dollars. Regular payments. Like a salary. Like hush money.
My hands shook as I set the papers down.
“He’s been paying her,” I said. “All this time.”
“Look at the last one,” Martin said. “Three days ago. The largest payment yet. Half a million dollars. Deposited the same day you told her where you were taking Sophie.”
I sank into a chair.
Elena hadn’t just told him the address. She had sold us. She had sold her own niece. For money.
I stood up. Rage burned hot in my chest.
“I’m going to talk to her.”
“Adrian, don’t,” Martin warned. “It could be a trap. Silas is expecting you to go to her.”
“I have to know why,” I said. “I have to hear it from her own mouth.”
I drove to Elena’s house. My hands gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles were white. Rain blurred the windshield. The world felt cold and cruel.
I walked up to her front door. I didn’t knock. I turned the handle and walked right in.
Elena was sitting at the kitchen table. She was holding a check. A very large check. Signed by Silas Hale.
She looked up when I walked in. Her face went pale.
“Adrian… how did you —”
“Why?” I said. My voice broke. “Why, Elena? She’s your niece. Sophie loves you. She calls you Auntie. Why would you sell us out to a monster like Silas?”
Elena stood up quickly. She looked panicked.
“It’s not what you think.”
“Not what I think?” I threw the bank records onto the table. “He’s been paying you for two years. He paid you half a million dollars the day we went into hiding. And you gave him our location. You led him right to us.”
Elena looked at the papers. Tears filled her eyes. But she didn’t look guilty. She looked desperate.
“Adrian… please. Let me explain.”
“Explain what?” I shouted. “Explain why you helped him try to kill a six-year-old child? Explain why you’re taking money to murder your own family?”
Elena stepped forward. She reached for me.
“Silas doesn’t just want Sophie’s inheritance,” she said quickly. “He wants something else. Something much older. Something that belongs to all of us. And he knows the only way to get it… is through Sophie.”
I stopped.
“What is he looking for?”
Elena hesitated. She looked toward the window, then back at me.
“Your wife… before she died… she hid something. A document. Something that proves Silas has been stealing from the family for decades. Something that could put him in prison forever. And she left it to Sophie. Protected. Locked away. Only Sophie can authorize its release.”
My breath caught.
“Elena… what is it?”
Elena looked me straight in the eyes.
“Your wife discovered that Silas is not just stealing money, Adrian. He’s not even a Hale. He’s an imposter. He stole the family name, the fortune, everything. And the proof… is in that document. That’s why he wants Sophie dead. It’s not just about money. It’s about survival. If that document comes out… he loses everything.”
I stood frozen.
Everything made sense now. The threats. The attempts on Sophie’s life. The bribes. The fear.
Silas wasn’t just protecting his fortune. He was protecting his entire identity.
“And you?” I asked quietly. “Why are you helping him?”
May you like
Elena looked down at the check in her hand. Tears spilled over.
“He has our son, Adrian. He took my boy. He said if I didn’t give him what he wanted… he would kill him. I had no choice.”
