Chapter 12 - THE IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE

I walked out of the jail in a daze.

A brother.

I had a brother. Someone Silas had raised. Someone he had taught to hate me. Someone who was coming to kill us.

My hands shook as I drove back to the safe house. Every shadow looked like him. Every car that followed too closely made my heart race.

Silas had played the long game. Even locked in a cell, he had an heir. A weapon. A son who would do exactly what he commanded.

I reached the safe house. Martin was waiting for me. He saw my face and stood up immediately.

“What happened?”

I told him everything. Silas’s final revelation. The brother. The second heir.

Martin went pale.

“I’ve been running background checks on everyone connected to Silas. If there is another son… he has been completely erased. No birth certificate. No records. Nothing.”

“Silas raised him in secret,” I said. “He wanted a perfect heir. Someone he could control. Someone who would do his bidding without question. And he kept him hidden… waiting for the day he would be unleashed.”

“Which means,” Martin said slowly, “this man knows everything about you. But you know nothing about him. He could be anyone. Your lawyer. Your doctor. Someone you’ve known for years.”

A cold thought struck me.

“Vanessa.”

Martin frowned. “What about her?”

“She was engaged to me. She knew everything about my life. About Sophie. About the house. About the security.” I stared at Martin. “What if she wasn’t just working for Silas? What if she was working for him? For my brother?”

Martin pulled out his phone.

“I’ll run every check on Vanessa. Every connection. Every relative. Every secret meeting.”

Hours passed.

I sat in the living room, staring at the floor. Elena was resting in the next room. Sophie was asleep upstairs. They were safe. For now.

Then Martin’s phone rang.

He answered. He listened. His face went whiter with every passing second.

He hung up slowly.

“Adrian… you need to sit down.”

I stood perfectly still.

“Tell me.”

“Vanessa’s father… was Silas’s brother. But that’s not the connection. Adrian… DNA results just came back. Comparing your profile… and Vanessa’s.”

Martin looked at me with eyes full of dread.

“Adrian… Vanessa is your sister.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“No. That’s impossible. She was going to marry me. She was going to be Sophie’s stepmother.”

“She didn’t know,” Martin said quickly. “Silas separated all of you. He placed you in the city. He placed Vanessa in another. He kept your brother hidden completely. He planned to have Vanessa marry you… so that when you died… she would inherit everything. And then your brother would kill her… and take it all.”

I felt physically ill.

Silas had arranged everything. The engagement. The attempt on Sophie’s life. The betrayal. He had used his own children as pawns. He had been willing to have his own granddaughter killed by her own aunt.

“Where is Vanessa now?” I asked.

“Released on bail this morning,” Martin said. “She agreed to testify against Silas in exchange for immunity. She had no idea who you were. She had no idea Sophie was her niece.”

I grabbed my keys.

“I need to talk to her.”

“Adrian… it’s dangerous. If Silas sent her… if she still has orders…”

“She doesn’t know the truth,” I said. “And she deserves to hear it. Before our brother finds her too.”

I drove to Vanessa’s apartment. It was late. The city was quiet.

I knocked on her door.

Vanessa opened it. She looked tired. Pale. Wearing simple clothes. She stared at me in shock.

“Adrian… why are you here?”

I stepped inside. I closed the door behind me.

“I need to tell you something. Something that will change everything.”

I told her. Slowly. Gently. I told her about Silas. About our mother. About the DNA. About the brother.

Vanessa sank onto the sofa. She didn’t speak for a very long time. Tears streamed silently down her face.

“He told me my parents were dead,” she whispered. “He told me you were a wealthy man who needed a wife. He told me… if I could not control you… I had to make sure the child never stood in the way.”

She looked up at me. Her eyes were broken.

“I tried to kill my own niece, Adrian. I tried to kill Sophie. And I didn’t even know why.”

“It wasn’t your fault,” I said. “Silas manipulated all of us. He stole our past. He stole our identities. And now… he has sent our brother to finish the job.”

Vanessa stood up quickly. She looked toward the window.

“He told me someone would come for me tonight. Someone to take me to safety. He said it was his lawyer.”

My blood turned to ice.

“Vanessa… that’s him. That’s our brother.”

A knock came at the door. Three slow, measured knocks. Exactly like Silas used to knock.

Vanessa froze.

“He’s here.”

I looked around the room. No other exit. Only the door.

“Stay behind me,” I whispered. “Don’t say a word.”

I stepped toward the door. I reached for the handle.

And then I heard the voice on the other side. Low. Calm. Familiar.

“Vanessa? Open the door. I’m here to take you home.”

My heart stopped.

I knew that voice.

May you like

I had known it for years.

It was Martin.
