Chapter 17 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

I arrived at the safe house forty minutes later.
Police cars surrounded the building. Lights flashed across the lawn. Officers stood at every door.
I ran inside.
Down the stairs. Into the basement.
I found the room. Second door on the left. Combination 0417.
I turned the dial. The lock clicked.
I pushed the door open.
Two little girls sat huddled together on a cot. Lily — small, wide-eyed, clutching a stuffed bear — and Sophie, holding her hand tightly.
They looked up.
Sophie jumped up and ran to me.
“DADDY!”
I caught her. I lifted her. I held her so tightly I could barely breathe.
“You’re safe. You’re safe, baby. I’ve got you.”
Sophie buried her face in my neck.
“Auntie Vanessa came. And the police. And they said… they said Martin…”
I closed my eyes.
“I know. I know, baby.”
I looked over at Lily. She stood watching me, quiet and solemn. She looked exactly like Martin. Same eyes. Same quiet strength.
I set Sophie down. I walked over to Lily. I knelt down in front of her.
“Lily?” I said gently. “I’m Adrian. I was your daddy’s friend.”
Lily looked at me.
“Where is my daddy?” she whispered.
My heart shattered.
“Your daddy… he was very brave. He saved us. He saved me. He saved Sophie. And he loved you more than anything in the whole world.”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears. But she didn’t cry. She stood up straight. Just like him.
“I knew he would come back,” she said quietly. “He promised.”
I pulled her into my arms.
“I promise you, Lily. I will take care of you. For as long as I live. You will never be alone again. I promise.”
Lily wrapped her small arms around my neck.
“Okay,” she whispered.
I stood up. Holding both girls.
And then I saw him.
Standing in the doorway.
Silas.
He stood there. Alone. No guards. No weapons. Just the remote in his hand.
He looked at the girls. Then at me.
“Let them go, Adrian,” he said quietly. “This is between us.”
I set the girls behind me.
“Go upstairs,” I told them. “Find the police. Go with them. Now.”
Sophie hesitated.
“Daddy —”
“GO!” I shouted.
They ran past Silas. Out the door. Up the stairs.
Silas didn’t stop them.
He walked into the room. He closed the door. Locked it.
We stood facing each other. Father and son. In a room beneath the earth.
“You have the drive,” Silas said. It wasn’t a question.
“I have everything,” I said. “Your crimes. Your confession. Your orders. Every name. Every payment. Every murder. It’s all there.”
Silas nodded slowly.
“Martin was always the smart one. Quiet. Patient. Loyal. Until he wasn’t.”
“He was better than you,” I said. “He was better than all of us.”
Silas looked at the floor.
“I know. And that is why I had to destroy him. Because goodness is a weakness. And in this world… the strong survive.”
He looked up at me.
“But you are different. You have his heart. And my will. That is dangerous.”
Silas held up the remote.
“There is no way out, Adrian. The police are upstairs. My life is over. But I will not go to prison. And I will not let you destroy everything I built.”
He stepped closer.
“You have two choices. You shoot me. And you become exactly like me. Or I press this button. And we both die here. Together.”
May you like
He waited.
“Choose, son.”
