Chapter 9: The Reason He Chose Me
I didn't cry.
That surprised me.
After everything I had learned, after every secret that had been dragged into the light, I expected tears.
I expected screaming.
I expected the kind of pain that made people fall apart.
But instead, I felt empty.
A strange, quiet emptiness.
Like my heart had spent the entire night fighting, and now it was simply too tired to continue.
I looked at Marcus.
The man standing in front of me was someone I knew.
And someone I didn't.
"You knew me before we met.""
My voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
Marcus nodded.
"Yes.""
The honesty should have mattered.
But it didn't.
Not anymore.
"How?""
He looked down.
"I saw you before.""
"Where?""
He hesitated.
And that hesitation hurt.
Because even now, he was still deciding how much truth I deserved.
"At a charity event.""
I frowned.
"I never went to a charity event with you.""
"I know.""
"Then how did you see me?""
Marcus swallowed.
"I was there with my father.""
I stared at him.
"The father who disappeared?""
"Yes.""
"What were you doing there?""
He looked away.
"Trying to solve my problems.""
Of course.
Every road led back to that.
Problems.
Debt.
Fear.
Secrets.
I crossed my arms.
"Keep going.""
Marcus sat down.
For the first time, he looked older.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
Like years of hiding had finally caught up with him.
"My father's business was failing.""
I listened.
"He owed people money.""
"The same people Daniel mentioned?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"And you thought I could help you?""
His eyes lifted.
"No.""
I waited.
"Not at first.""
I almost laughed.
"Not at first?""
Marcus rubbed his hands together.
"I saw you talking to your parents.""
I frowned.
"My parents?""
"Your father was negotiating with someone.""
"What?""
I shook my head.
"My father wasn't involved in any business deals.""
Marcus looked at me.
"He wasn't.""
A pause.
"He was helping someone.""
I felt confused.
"What does that mean?""
Marcus looked toward the window.
"That night, I thought your family had connections.""
My stomach tightened.
"You thought I had money.""
"No.""
"Then what did you think?""
He didn't answer.
I already knew.
"Protection.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
The word felt like a betrayal.
Not because he needed help.
Because he saw me as a solution before he saw me as a person.
"So you approached me.""
Marcus looked ashamed.
"Yes.""
"Did you know my name?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know anything about me?""
A pause.
"Some things.""
My chest tightened.
"What things?""
He swallowed.
"That you worked nearby. That you were kind. That you helped people.""
I stared.
"So you watched me.""
"Not like that.""
"Then what was it?""
He had no answer.
Because there was no version of it that sounded innocent.
"I was supposed to ask for help.""
I looked at him.
"But you didn't.""
"No.""
"Why?""
Marcus's eyes met mine.
"Because when I talked to you, I forgot why I came.""
I hated that part of me still wanted to believe him.
Because his voice sounded sincere.
Because the memories were real.
The first coffee.
The long conversations.
The way he made me laugh.
But now every beautiful moment had a shadow behind it.
"How long did it take you to decide?""
"Decide what?""
"To stop seeing me as a way out.""
Marcus looked down.
"I don't know.""
"That's not an answer.""
He closed his eyes.
"Maybe the first night.""
I shook my head.
"Maybe?""
He looked at me.
"Jasmine, I know what I did was wrong.""
"Do you?""
"Yes.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"You know you got caught.""
He looked hurt.
But I continued.
"If I never found out, would you have told me?""
The silence answered.
And that hurt more than any confession.
"No.""
Marcus whispered:
"No.""
I turned away.
For years, I had believed our love story was something rare.
A coincidence.
Two people finding each other at the perfect moment.
Now I knew he had found me on purpose.
The only question was whether love came after.
Or whether it was just another thing he needed to convince himself was real.
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
A message.
From Elena.
*We need to talk. Alone.*
I looked at Marcus.
He saw the screen.
"Elena?""
I nodded.
"I need answers from someone who isn't trying to protect himself.""
The words hurt him.
Good.
Because they were true.
An hour later, I met Elena at a small coffee shop across town.
She was already sitting by the window.
When she saw me, she stood.
"You came.""
I nodded.
"I need the truth.""
Elena looked down.
"I know.""
I sat across from her.
"Did you know Marcus approached me because of my family?""
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
"Yes.""
My stomach dropped.
"You knew?""
"Not at first.""
"Then when?""
"After we divorced.""
I stared.
"How?""
Elena folded her hands.
"Because I found his old journal.""
A journal.
Of course.
Another hidden thing.
"What did it say?""
She looked uncomfortable.
"That he noticed you before you noticed him.""
I looked away.
The words hurt.
"Did he love me?""
Elena was quiet.
That question seemed harder for her than all the others.
Finally:
"Yes.""
I looked up.
"How do you know?""
"Because I knew the old Marcus.""
She looked toward the window.
"The man I married was selfish. Controlling. Afraid.""
A pause.
"But he wasn't incapable of love.""
I didn't know whether that made me feel better or worse.
"He ruined everything because he was scared.""
I shook my head.
"Fear doesn't explain seven years of lies.""
"No.""
Elena looked at me.
"But it explains why he keeps making the same mistakes.""
I was quiet.
Then I asked:
"Why did you really leave?""
Elena's expression changed.
"The truth?""
"Yes.""
She took a breath.
"I found out Marcus had been meeting with Claire.""
I nodded.
"I know.""
"No.""
Her voice became serious.
"You don't.""
I looked at her.
"What else?""
"Claire wasn't just a business partner.""
My heart sank.
"What was she?""
Elena looked at me.
"She was Marcus's sister.""
I froze.
"What?""
"Half-sister.""
The world seemed to shift.
"Marcus has a sister?""
"He does.""
"Then why did he hide her?""
Elena looked away.
"Because Claire knows where Marcus's father disappeared to.""
I felt a chill.
"Wait.""
I shook my head.
"His father disappeared?""
"Yes.""
"But Daniel called him.""
Elena nodded.
"Because he came back.""
My mind raced.
"So Marcus knew his father was alive.""
"Yes.""
"And he hid that too.""
"Yes.""
I closed my eyes.
The secrets were endless.
But then something clicked.
"The person who helped him hide everything.""
Elena nodded.
"Claire.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because Claire was protecting Marcus.""
"From what?""
Elena hesitated.
Then whispered:
"From the truth about their father.""
My heart pounded.
"What truth?""
Elena looked at me.
"The reason Marcus's father left.""
I waited.
"He wasn't running from debt.""
The words froze me.
"Then what was he running from?""
Elena reached into her bag.
She pulled out a photograph.
She placed it on the table.
I picked it up.
It showed a younger Marcus.
A younger Claire.
And a man standing beside them.
I recognized him immediately.
Daniel.
But that wasn't what shocked me.
It was the fourth person in the picture.
A woman.
A woman standing next to Marcus's father.
A woman I knew.
A woman I had met many times.
My hand started shaking.
"No.""
Elena watched my face.
"Yes.""
I looked at her.
"How?""
She whispered:
"Because the person Marcus was protecting wasn't his father.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Then who?""
Elena leaned closer.
And said:
"Your mother.""
I stared at her.
My entire body went cold.
"My mother?""
Elena nodded.
"Marcus didn't choose you because he thought your family could protect him.""
My heart pounded.
"He chose you because he knew your family was connected to his.""
I couldn't speak.
For seven years, I thought my marriage began with a coincidence.
A random meeting.
A beautiful accident.
But it wasn't.
It started with a secret that existed before I ever knew Marcus.
And now I finally understood why he had been so afraid of me finding the truth.
Because the biggest secret wasn't his past.
It was mine.
May you like
And according to Elena...
My mother had known Marcus long before I ever met him.
