Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Secrets

Marcus stood frozen with the phone pressed against his ear.

I watched every emotion cross his face.

Shock.

Fear.

Then something I had never seen from him before.

Helplessness.

The man who always had an explanation.

The man who always knew how to calm a situation.

The man who could convince me that every lie had a reason.

Had no words.

"Marcus?""

The voice on the phone was too faint for me to hear clearly.

But whoever it was had his full attention.

His eyes stayed locked on mine.

Like I was suddenly the most dangerous thing in the room.

"How do you know her?""

His voice was barely controlled.

A pause.

Then his expression changed.

"What did you say?""

I stepped closer.

"Who is it?""

Marcus turned away.

That hurt more than I expected.

Even now.

Even after everything.

His first instinct was still to hide.

I reached for the phone.

He pulled it away.

The movement was small.

But it said everything.

"Give me the phone.""

"Jasmine—"

"Give me the phone.""

His eyes met mine.

For a second, I thought he would refuse.

Then he looked exhausted.

Like he finally understood there was no version of this where he could keep me outside the truth.

He handed it to me.

I lifted it.

"Hello?""

Silence.

Then a man's voice answered.

"Jasmine Carter.""

My body went cold.

He knew my full name.

Not just Jasmine.

Not the name Marcus had casually mentioned.

My full name.

"Who are you?""

The man chuckled quietly.

A sound that immediately made me uncomfortable.

"Marcus didn't tell you about me?""

I looked at Marcus.

"No.""

The man laughed again.

"Of course he didn't.""

His voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

That made it worse.

"Who are you?""

"My name is Daniel Whitmore.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Whitmore.

Elena's last name.

I looked at Marcus.

His face had gone pale.

"You're Elena's father.""

The line went quiet.

Then:

"Very good.""

I swallowed.

"Why do you know me?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he asked:

"Do you know what Marcus told me seven years ago?""

I frowned.

"No.""

"He said you were the only person who ever made him want to change.""

The words should have sounded like a compliment.

They didn't.

Because I was beginning to understand how Marcus operated.

He created beautiful sentences.

Then hid ugly truths behind them.

"Why are you calling me?""

Daniel sighed.

"Because my daughter was right.""

"About what?""

"That you deserved to know.""

I looked at Marcus.

He looked terrified.

Not because Daniel was lying.

Because he was afraid of what Daniel would reveal.

"What does Elena have to do with this?""

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"Elena spent years trying to understand why Marcus destroyed everything.""

I frowned.

"Destroyed?""

"Yes.""

The word landed heavily.

"What did he do?""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Jasmine, don't listen to him.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Again.

The silence.

Daniel continued.

"That is the problem with Marcus.""

I held the phone closer.

"What?""

"He always wants to tell people when the truth is convenient.""

I stared at my husband.

The sentence felt familiar.

Too familiar.

"Tell me what happened.""

Daniel was quiet for a moment.

Then:

"Seven years ago, before your wedding, Marcus came to me.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He asked for my help.""

"Why?""

"Because he was running out of time.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Running out of time for what?""

Daniel answered:

"To protect himself.""

My chest tightened.

"From what?""

"From the people who wanted the money he owed.""

The debt.

The house.

The secrets.

It all connected.

"Why did he come to you?""

"Because I knew how to make problems disappear.""

I didn't like the way he said that.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel ignored the question.

"Marcus had one option.""

"What option?""

"He needed to make his assets untouchable.""

My eyes moved around the house.

The house.

My name.

The documents.

"He put everything under me.""

I looked at Marcus.

"What?""

Daniel continued.

"Not everything.""

A pause.

"The house.""

My stomach dropped.

"He put the house under my daughter's name originally. Then later transferred it through Marcus's company.""

I felt dizzy.

"Why?""

"Because if creditors came after him, they couldn't take it.""

I looked at Marcus.

"You didn't protect me.""

His eyes filled with regret.

"I was trying to.""

"No.""

My voice broke.

"You used me as a shield.""

He looked down.

And for once, he didn't deny it.

Daniel continued.

"Marcus believed he could fix everything before you ever found out.""

I laughed softly.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

The bitterness in my voice surprised even me.

Daniel sighed.

"Jasmine, there is something else.""

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

There was always something else.

"What?""

"Elena didn't leave because of the money.""

I opened my eyes.

"Then why?""

Daniel paused.

"Because she discovered Marcus was planning to do the same thing to you.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Marcus.

"What?""

His face changed.

"Jasmine, that's not what happened.""

"Then what happened?""

He couldn't answer.

Daniel spoke.

"Marcus had prepared documents.""

I felt my hands go cold.

"Documents for what?""

"Your marriage.""

I looked at the folder from upstairs.

The letter.

The papers.

The hidden documents.

"What kind?""

Daniel's voice lowered.

"The same type of documents he used with Elena.""

I stared at Marcus.

"No.""

He stepped closer.

"Jasmine, listen.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You don't get to tell me to listen anymore.""

His face fell.

Daniel continued.

"He planned to put certain assets in your name.""

"Why?""

"Because he knew someone might come after him.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Who?""

Daniel answered:

"The same people who were after his father.""

A cold silence filled the room.

I finally understood.

Marcus hadn't just hidden his past.

He had built a future around his secrets.

A future where I was part of the protection plan.

A future where I became another person carrying the consequences of choices I never made.

I looked at him.

"Did you ever love me?""

His face changed.

That question hurt him.

Good.

Because I needed him to understand what he had taken from me.

"Jasmine.""

"Answer me.""

He swallowed.

"Yes.""

"Then why?""

His voice cracked.

"Because I was afraid.""

I shook my head.

"You always say that.""

"Because it's true.""

"No.""

I stepped back.

"You were afraid of losing things.""

I pointed at the room.

"Your company.""

I pointed toward the documents.

"Your money.""

Then I looked at him.

"Your image.""

My voice softened.

"But you were never afraid of losing me.""

Marcus looked devastated.

Because maybe he was finally realizing that was the truth.

Daniel interrupted quietly.

"Jasmine.""

I lifted the phone.

"What?""

"There is one final thing you need to know.""

I almost laughed.

"Of course there is.""

His voice became serious.

"Marcus didn't meet you by accident.""

The room stopped.

I looked at Marcus.

"What does that mean?""

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel said:

"Seven years ago, Marcus was looking for someone.""

My heartbeat increased.

"Someone who could help him escape his problems.""

I stared at Marcus.

"No.""

Daniel continued.

"He found you.""

My throat tightened.

"Are you saying he married me for protection?""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Jasmine, no.""

But his voice sounded desperate.

Not confident.

Desperate.

Daniel said:

"Ask him about the first night you met.""

I looked at Marcus.

The first night.

The coffee shop.

The rain.

The way he said he had never felt a connection like that before.

The night I thought changed my life.

"Marcus?""

He looked away.

And that was the answer.

My heart sank.

"What happened that night?""

He didn't speak.

I waited.

Finally, he whispered:

"I knew who you were.""

The world seemed to stop.

"What?""

"I knew your family.""

I stared.

"You knew me before we met?""

He nodded slowly.

And the worst part was not the confession.

It was the look on his face.

The look of someone who knew the truth would destroy the last thing he had left.

"I didn't plan to fall in love with you.""

My voice was barely audible.

"But you planned to find me.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

And said nothing.

The call with Daniel ended.

The house became silent again.

But this silence was different.

Because now I wasn't wondering what Marcus had hidden.

I knew.

The question was something much worse.

How much of our love had been real?

And as I looked at the man I married, I realized the final secret wasn't about Elena.

It wasn't about the money.

It wasn't even about the house.

May you like

It was about me.

And the reason Marcus chose me in the first place.
