Chapter 6: The Woman Who Came Back

The name echoed through the bedroom.

Elena.

For a second, I forgot how to breathe.

The woman Marcus had spent seven years trying to erase from my life was standing downstairs.

In our house.

The house that apparently was never mine.

The house filled with secrets I was only now discovering.

I looked at Marcus.

He looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Terrified.

And that was the answer before I even asked the question.

He knew she was coming.

Maybe not tonight.

Maybe not this exact moment.

But some part of him had been waiting for this.

"Why is she here?""

Marcus shook his head.

"I don't know.""

I stared at him.

"You're lying.""

"I'm not.""

"You knew she existed. You knew she had evidence. You knew she was coming after you.""

I held up the letter.

"And now she walks into the house you said belonged to her?""

Marcus stepped closer.

"Jasmine, please don't do anything until I explain.""

I laughed quietly.

"Explain?""

I looked at the letter in my hand.

"You have been explaining for hours.""

The voice downstairs came again.

"Marcus?""

Elena sounded calm.

Almost too calm.

Like she wasn't walking into a house where she knew she might destroy someone's life.

Marcus closed his eyes.

"I need to talk to her.""

I stared.

"Alone?""

"No.""

The answer surprised me.

He looked at me.

"You should hear everything.""

For the first time that night, I believed he meant it.

Not because he suddenly became honest.

But because he looked like a man who knew there was no place left to hide.

We walked downstairs together.

Every step felt heavier.

The woman standing in the living room was not what I expected.

I don't know what I imagined.

Someone angry.

Someone dramatic.

Someone who would walk in and demand answers.

But Elena wasn't like that.

She stood quietly beside the couch, holding a small black bag.

She looked around the room.

Not with anger.

With sadness.

Like she was looking at a place she once loved.

Then her eyes moved to me.

"Jasmine.""

I stopped.

Hearing my name from her mouth felt strange.

"Elena.""

She nodded.

"I know this isn't how you should have found out.""

I almost smiled.

"Nothing tonight has happened the way it should have.""

Her eyes softened.

"You hate me right now.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"I know what this looks like.""

She glanced around the room.

"You probably think I came here to ruin your marriage.""

I said nothing.

Because a part of me had wondered exactly that.

Elena looked at Marcus.

"I didn't come for revenge.""

Marcus crossed his arms.

"Then why did you come?""

Her expression changed.

The sadness disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

"Because you left me no choice.""

The room became silent.

I looked between them.

"What does that mean?""

Elena looked at me.

"It means Marcus has been running from the same truth for years.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Don't.""

Elena didn't look at him.

"Do you know what I found in the old phone?""

I tightened my grip on the letter.

"The messages with Claire?""

Marcus's face changed.

Elena noticed.

"So he told you.""

"Not everything.""

A bitter smile appeared on her face.

"No. He never does.""

Marcus looked angry.

"Enough.""

Elena finally turned toward him.

"No, Marcus. Enough was seven years ago.""

The words hit him.

I saw it.

A small reaction.

Like she had reached a place in him that I couldn't.

"Who is Claire?""

I asked.

Neither answered immediately.

Then Elena said:

"Claire was Marcus's business partner.""

I frowned.

"Business partner?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did you say she was the reason you left?""

Elena looked at Marcus.

"Because she knew.""

"Knew what?""

Elena opened her bag.

She pulled out a folder.

Not the same one from upstairs.

A different one.

She placed it on the coffee table.

"I found this after our divorce.""

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

"Don't open that.""

I looked at him.

Another warning.

Another secret.

Elena opened the folder.

Inside were copies of financial documents.

Emails.

Photographs.

And one picture.

She picked it up.

Then handed it to me.

I looked down.

My stomach turned.

It was Marcus.

Years younger.

Standing beside Claire.

But that wasn't what shocked me.

It was the location.

The background.

I recognized it.

A building.

A company logo.

A place Marcus had told me he had never worked.

"What is this?""

Elena answered:

"This was taken three months before Marcus met you.""

I looked at Marcus.

"So?""

Elena continued.

"Marcus told you he started his company after we divorced.""

I said nothing.

Because I remembered.

Marcus had told me his business was something he built from nothing.

A fresh beginning.

A dream.

Elena pointed to the photo.

"He started it while we were still married.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Is that true?""

He didn't answer.

Again.

That silence.

"Marcus.""

His voice was low.

"It wasn't important.""

I stared at him.

"Not important?""

Elena laughed softly.

"That's always his favorite phrase.""

Marcus ignored her.

"Jasmine, the business wasn't the problem.""

"Then what was?""

Elena looked at the documents.

"The money.""

My chest tightened.

"What money?""

Elena slid another paper toward me.

"This company was built using money from an account Marcus wasn't supposed to access.""

I read the page.

The names blurred.

"Whose account?""

Elena looked at Marcus.

Then said:

"Mine.""

I looked up.

Marcus immediately shook his head.

"I paid it back.""

Elena's expression hardened.

"After I found out.""

I looked at him.

"You took money from her?""

"It wasn't like that.""

"Then what was it like?""

Marcus ran a hand over his face.

"I was desperate.""

There it was.

The reason.

The explanation.

The thing he always reached for.

"I needed money to keep the company alive.""

Elena nodded.

"And instead of asking me, he transferred funds without telling me.""

I looked at Marcus.

"How much?""

Neither spoke.

"How much?""

Elena answered.

"Two hundred thousand dollars.""

The room went quiet.

I stared at Marcus.

"Two hundred thousand?""

He looked ashamed.

"I was going to replace it.""

"But you didn't.""

"I tried.""

Elena shook her head.

"You replaced some of it.""

She looked at me.

"But not all.""

My mind was racing.

The house.

The money.

The hidden marriage.

The woman named Claire.

It was all connected.

"Why didn't you tell me any of this?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"That you would see me differently.""

I stared.

"You should have given me the chance.""

The words hurt because they were true.

I would have been angry.

I would have been hurt.

But I would have had a choice.

Marcus took that from me.

Elena picked up another document.

"There is something else.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She hesitated.

Then she handed me a printed email.

The sender was Marcus.

The receiver was Claire.

The date was seven years ago.

The month before Marcus and I got married.

I read the first sentence.

And my hands started shaking.

"Once Jasmine signs the paperwork, everything will finally be protected.""

I looked up.

"What paperwork?""

Marcus went pale.

"Jasmine.""

"What paperwork?""

He didn't answer.

Elena did.

"The house transfer.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

She looked at Marcus.

"Tell her.""

He said nothing.

"Tell her what you did.""

I looked at him.

"What did you do?""

Marcus swallowed.

Then, quietly:

"I put the house in your name.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Elena continued.

"Because if anyone came after him, he wanted the house protected.""

I stared.

"Protected from who?""

Marcus looked away.

And that was when I realized.

The house wasn't just a secret.

It wasn't just a lie.

It was evidence.

"Marcus.""

He didn't speak.

I stepped closer.

"Protected from who?""

His face changed.

And when he finally answered, his voice was almost a whisper.

"From my creditors.""

I froze.

The room felt like it tilted.

"You were in debt?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

He didn't answer.

Elena did.

"Enough that if the truth came out, he could lose everything.""

I looked at Marcus.

"You used me.""

His eyes filled with regret.

"No.""

"You married me and put the house in my name so nobody could take it.""

"Jasmine, I loved you.""

"Did you?""

The question broke something.

Because he didn't have an immediate answer.

And that hurt more than anything.

Elena picked up her bag.

"I didn't come here to make you hate him.""

I looked at her.

"Then why?""

She walked toward the door.

"Because tomorrow morning, someone else is coming.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

She stopped.

Then looked at Marcus.

And the fear returned to his face.

"The person who helped him hide everything.""

I felt cold.

"Claire?""

Elena shook her head.

"No.""

"Then who?""

Elena opened the door.

And before she left, she said:

"The person who knows the truth about Marcus's first marriage, his money, and why I disappeared.""

She looked directly at me.

"His mother.""

The door closed.

I turned slowly toward Marcus.

"Your mother?""

He didn't move.

Because he knew.

The last person he wanted me to meet was coming.

And when she arrived, I would finally learn the secret Marcus had protected above everything else.

The one even Elena didn't know.

His mother's secret.

May you like

And according to Marcus's face...

It was the only one that could destroy him.
