Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Disappearance

I didn't answer Elena immediately.

Not because I didn't want to.

Because suddenly, I wasn't sure I knew what answer I was supposed to give.

For seven years, I had believed Marcus was the one person in this world who would never intentionally hurt me.

Now a stranger on the phone was telling me there was a version of my husband I had never met.

A version that existed before me.

A version that had left behind secrets so heavy they were still following him years later.

"Jasmine?""

Elena's voice pulled me back.

"I'm here.""

There was a pause.

She sounded older than I expected.

Not old.

Just tired.

Like someone who had been carrying a story for too long.

"I know this is a lot.""

I looked across the kitchen.

Marcus was standing there, watching me.

His face was tense.

His hands were clenched at his sides.

He looked like he wanted to take the phone from me.

That alone told me I needed to keep listening.

"How did you get my number?"" I asked.

Elena didn't hesitate.

"Marcus gave it to me years ago.""

My eyebrows pulled together.

"What?""

"After our divorce was finalized, he changed his number. But some things don't disappear as easily as people hope.""

I looked at Marcus.

His eyes dropped.

Another secret.

Another piece of a life he had hidden.

"Why are you calling me now?""

Elena was quiet for a moment.

Then she said:

"Because I found out Marcus was still lying.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"About what?""

"About everything.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Jasmine, hang up.""

I turned toward him.

The fact that he asked me to stop instead of telling me I was wrong made my decision easier.

"No.""

His expression changed.

"Jasmine.""

I raised my hand.

"Not another word.""

He stopped.

I turned away from him.

"Elena, I'm listening.""

The silence on the other end lasted a few seconds.

Then she spoke.

"When I met Marcus, he was charming.""

I almost laughed.

Because that was the easiest part to believe.

"He made me feel like I was the only person in the world who understood him. He remembered every little thing about me. My favorite coffee.

The songs I liked. The way I hated thunderstorms.""

My eyes moved around the kitchen.

Marcus knew those things about me too.

He knew my coffee order.

He knew which songs made me cry.

He knew I hated being alone during storms.

For a second, I wondered if any of those moments had ever belonged only to me.

"How long were you married?""

"Six years.""

"And why did you divorce?""

Elena didn't answer immediately.

"Because I discovered something about him.""

"What?""

Her voice lowered.

"Marcus wasn't the man he said he was.""

I looked at my husband.

"What does that mean?""

Elena sighed.

"It means Marcus built every relationship by controlling what people knew.""

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because that was exactly what he had done to me.

He hadn't lied about small things.

He had controlled the entire story.

"Tell me what happened.""

Elena was silent.

Then:

"The night I left Marcus, I found documents.""

My heart started beating faster.

"What kind of documents?""

"Financial records.""

I looked at Marcus.

He immediately shook his head.

"No.""

I stared at him.

"You know what she's talking about.""

"Jasmine, don't listen to her without understanding.""

I turned away.

"Elena?""

She continued.

"Before we got married, Marcus told me he had no debt. He told me he was starting over. He told me everything from his past was behind him.""

"And?""

"And it wasn't.""

I felt a knot forming in my stomach.

"What did you find?""

"Hidden accounts.""

The kitchen went silent.

"Accounts?""

"Yes.""

Marcus moved closer.

"She's twisting this.""

I looked at him.

"Are you saying she is lying?""

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

Elena continued.

"He had money problems before we married. Serious ones. He used my credit to cover them.""

I frowned.

"You mean he stole from you?""

Marcus's voice rose.

"That's not what happened.""

I looked at him.

"Then what happened?""

Nothing.

Again.

That silence.

The one I was starting to recognize.

Elena spoke softly.

"He always had a reason.""

I closed my eyes.

Because I knew exactly what she meant.

Marcus was good at reasons.

He had a reason for hiding his marriage.

A reason for preparing divorce papers.

A reason for another woman knowing my name.

"I don't understand," I said.

"Why would he hide that from me?""

Elena answered:

"Because people like Marcus don't hide things because they don't want others to know.""

A pause.

"They hide things because they want to control when others find out.""

The sentence stayed with me.

I looked at Marcus.

For the first time, I didn't see my husband.

I saw a man who had spent years choosing what version of himself everyone was allowed to see.

"Why are you telling me this now?""

Elena took a breath.

"Because I found out something two weeks ago.""

"What?""

"I found evidence that Marcus didn't just hide his past from you.""

My stomach tightened.

"What else?""

"He hid something about the night I left.""

Marcus immediately said:

"Enough.""

His voice was louder this time.

Not afraid.

Angry.

I turned toward him.

"Why are you angry?""

He looked at me.

"Because she is trying to destroy us.""

I stared at him.

"Are you saying she is lying?""

His jaw tightened.

"I am saying she wants revenge.""

Elena heard him.

Her voice became colder.

"Revenge?""

A bitter laugh came through the phone.

"Marcus, if I wanted revenge, Jasmine would have known about you seven years ago.""

Marcus went quiet.

I felt a chill.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Elena answered honestly.

"Because I thought I was done with him.""

The pain in her voice surprised me.

"But then I saw your wedding photo online.""

I looked at Marcus.

"You saw us?""

"Yes.""

"And you did nothing?""

"No.""

"Why?""

A long pause.

"Because you looked happy.""

Those words hurt in a strange way.

Because I knew what it felt like to look happy while someone was hiding the truth.

"Then what changed?""

Elena's voice became serious.

"I found something.""

"What?""

"An old phone.""

Marcus froze.

I noticed.

And so did Elena.

"Did you see his reaction?""

I didn't answer.

I didn't need to.

Elena continued.

"The phone belonged to Marcus.""

My heartbeat quickened.

"What was on it?""

"Messages.""

"Between who?""

Silence.

Then:

"Between Marcus and someone else.""

I looked at him.

"Who?""

Marcus shook his head.

"Jasmine, don't.""

But I couldn't stop now.

"Who?""

Elena said:

"A woman named Claire.""

The name meant nothing to me.

But Marcus's reaction did.

His entire face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Fear.

"Who is Claire?""

Nobody answered.

"Marcus.""

He looked away.

That was the first time I saw something different.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Panic.

"Who is Claire?""

Marcus finally whispered:

"She was someone from before.""

I laughed quietly.

"Everyone is someone from before with you.""

He didn't respond.

Elena spoke again.

"Jasmine, Claire is the reason I left.""

I held my breath.

"What do you mean?""

"Because Claire wasn't just a woman he knew.""

A pause.

"She was the person Marcus told me he would never see again.""

I looked at Marcus.

"And he did?""

Elena didn't answer.

She didn't have to.

Marcus had already answered with his face.

"Jasmine...""

I stepped back.

"How many?""

His eyes met mine.

"What?""

"How many people have I never known about?""

He opened his mouth.

No words.

The silence was devastating.

Elena's voice softened.

"Jasmine, I don't want to hurt you.""

I swallowed.

"Then why call me?""

"Because tomorrow, Marcus is going to tell you a version of the story.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"He will admit some things.""

My fingers went cold.

"He will apologize for some things.""

I stared at Marcus.

"But he won't tell you everything.""

The room felt like it was closing in.

"How do you know?""

Elena answered:

"Because that's what he does.""

I looked at my husband.

The man who held me when my father died.

The man who promised me forever.

The man who had just cooked dinner beside another woman.

I wanted to believe him.

A part of me was still fighting to believe him.

But another part of me was finally paying attention.

"Jasmine.""

Elena's voice became urgent.

"You need to check your house.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Your house.""

"Why?""

A pause.

Then she said:

"Because Marcus didn't only hide things in his past.""

My eyes moved slowly around the kitchen.

The walls.

The cabinets.

The rooms we shared.

"What did he hide?""

Elena whispered:

"Something that proves he never actually left me behind.""

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Marcus stared at me.

"What did she say?""

I looked at him.

For the first time, I didn't feel angry.

I felt afraid.

"She told me to check the house.""

His expression changed.

"Why?""

I watched him carefully.

"That's what I want to know.""

I turned toward the hallway.

Toward the bedroom.

Toward seven years of memories I suddenly wasn't sure were real.

Then Marcus said something behind me.

Something so quiet I almost missed it.

"Jasmine...""

I stopped.

"What?""

His voice cracked.

"There is something you need to know before you go looking.""

I turned around.

"What?""

He swallowed.

And then he said:

"The house you're living in...""

May you like

A pause.

"Was never supposed to be yours.""
