Chapter 2: The Envelope With My Name
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The kitchen felt smaller than it had ever been.
The refrigerator hummed behind me. The skillet Marcus had been cooking from still released the smell of garlic and herbs into the air. Everything looked painfully normal.
That was the strangest part.
My life was falling apart, but the room still looked like home.
I stared at the envelope sitting on the counter.
My name was written across the front.
*Jasmine Carter.*
Underneath it was another name.
A name I had never heard before.
*Elena Whitmore.*
I looked at Marcus.
His face had lost all color.
Not the face of a man caught flirting.
Not the face of a man embarrassed by a mistake.
The face of a man who had just watched a door open to a room he desperately wanted to keep locked.
"What is this?"" I asked.
My voice was quiet.
Almost too quiet.
Marcus stepped forward.
"Jasmine, don't open that.""
I looked at him.
That was the wrong answer.
Because if there was nothing inside that envelope, he wouldn't be afraid of me seeing it.
I picked it up.
His eyes followed my hand.
"Jasmine.""
I held up the envelope.
"Why are you scared of a piece of paper?""
Marcus opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Ava stood near the kitchen doorway, watching both of us.
For the first time since I saw her, she looked uncomfortable.
Not guilty.
Uncomfortable.
Like she knew something was about to happen that even she couldn't control.
I turned the envelope over.
The seal was already broken.
Someone had opened it before.
Someone had read whatever was inside.
I looked at Marcus.
"Was this you?""
He looked away.
That was another answer.
My fingers trembled slightly as I pulled the papers out.
The first page was simple.
A legal document.
At first, the words didn't make sense.
My eyes moved across the page, but my brain refused to understand what I was seeing.
Then one sentence caught my attention.
*Marriage dissolution agreement.*
I stopped breathing.
"What?""
Marcus took another step.
"Jasmine, listen to me.""
I looked up.
"Dissolution?""
My voice rose.
"Is this divorce paperwork?""
Ava looked down.
Marcus ran his hand through his hair.
"Let me explain.""
I laughed once.
A small, broken sound.
"Explain what?""
I held up the paper.
"That you prepared divorce papers behind my back?""
"No.""
"Then what?""
Marcus looked at Ava.
Again.
That look.
That silent conversation between them.
And suddenly I understood something.
Ava wasn't just a woman he was seeing.
She was someone involved.
Someone who knew the plan.
I turned to her.
"Who are you?""
She hesitated.
"My name is Ava Reynolds.""
"I know your name.""
I stepped closer.
"I mean who are you to him?""
Ava looked at Marcus.
He didn't answer.
So she did.
"I work with Marcus.""
"Work?""
I looked between them.
"That's all?""
Ava stayed silent.
That silence hurt more than a confession.
Because people only stayed quiet when the truth was dangerous.
Marcus finally spoke.
"She was helping me with something.""
"With what?""
He looked at the papers.
I followed his eyes.
The answer was sitting right there.
A divorce agreement.
My hands tightened around the document.
"You were planning to leave me.""
"No.""
The speed of his answer almost made me believe him.
Almost.
"No?""
I shook my head.
"Marcus, you have divorce papers with my name on them.""
"I never signed anything.""
"But you had them prepared.""
He looked away.
I felt something inside me crack.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just a quiet fracture.
The kind nobody else could hear.
For twelve years, I had built a life around this man.
I had memorized his coffee order.
His favorite songs.
The way he liked the blankets folded.
I knew every scar on his hands.
Every childhood story.
Every dream he had.
And now I was standing in my own kitchen, realizing I didn't know the most important thing about him.
That he had been planning an ending without me.
"Who is Elena Whitmore?""
The moment I said the name, Marcus froze.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
I noticed.
And Ava noticed too.
She looked at him.
"Marcus...""
He shook his head.
"Don't.""
I turned toward him.
"Don't what?""
Nobody answered.
I held the paper tighter.
"Who is Elena?""
Marcus walked toward the counter.
"Jasmine, this is complicated.""
"Complicated?""
I looked at the documents.
"You have another woman's name on divorce papers and you're telling me it's complicated?""
His expression hardened.
Not anger.
Defensiveness.
"I didn't cheat on you.""
The words hit me so strangely that for a second I didn't know how to respond.
I stared at him.
"You think that's the only thing I'm upset about?""
Marcus looked down.
"I made mistakes.""
"Yes.""
My voice became colder.
"You did.""
He rubbed his face.
"I was going to fix it.""
"Fix what?""
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Fix our marriage?""
Silence.
"Or fix your plan?""
Marcus looked at the floor.
That was when I knew.
Whatever happened between us had started long before tonight.
The woman.
The papers.
The secrets.
They were not the beginning.
They were evidence.
I turned to Ava.
"How long have you known about me?""
She looked surprised by the question.
"What?""
"How long have you known Marcus was married?""
Ava swallowed.
"Since the beginning.""
The answer landed like a slap.
"Since the beginning of what?""
She looked at Marcus.
He closed his eyes.
I didn't need anyone to explain.
I already knew.
"This isn't a three-month affair.""
Marcus immediately said, "Jasmine—"
"No.""
I pointed at him.
"Don't.""
My hands were shaking now.
"Don't stand there and act like I'm misunderstanding something.""
Ava whispered, "It wasn't supposed to happen this way.""
I looked at her.
"What wasn't?""
She looked at the envelope.
"The truth.""
I frowned.
"What truth?""
Ava took a breath.
Then she said something that made Marcus's entire body tense.
"Elena wasn't his mistress.""
I blinked.
"What?""
Ava continued.
"She's his ex-wife.""
The room went completely silent.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"Ex-wife?""
I looked at Marcus.
He didn't deny it.
That was worse.
I laughed quietly.
A strange sound.
A sound I didn't recognize.
"You were married before?""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Jasmine, I was going to tell you.""
I stared at him.
"How long have we been married?""
"Seven years.""
"And how long were you married to Elena?""
He didn't answer.
I waited.
Finally, he whispered:
"Six years.""
The kitchen blurred for a moment.
Six years.
He had spent six years with another woman.
Then seven years with me.
And somehow, I had never known.
Not once.
No pictures.
No mention.
No family stories.
Nothing.
How did someone erase six years of their life?
The answer was terrifying.
They didn't erase it.
They hid it.
"Why?""
The question came out softer than I expected.
Marcus looked at me.
"I was ashamed.""
"Of what?""
He swallowed.
"How it ended.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
I placed the papers down.
"Don't do that.""
"Do what?""
"Make yourself the victim.""
His face changed.
Because he knew I was right.
"You lied to me for seven years.""
"I wanted a fresh start.""
"A fresh start?""
I stared at him.
"Marcus, a fresh start doesn't mean burying a person you promised forever to.""
Ava quietly picked up her purse.
"I should leave.""
Neither of us stopped her.
Before she reached the door, she paused.
Then she looked back at me.
"Jasmine.""
I didn't answer.
She continued.
"There is something you need to know.""
Marcus's voice became sharp.
"Ava, don't.""
She ignored him.
"Elena didn't send those papers because she wants a divorce.""
My eyes narrowed.
"Then why?""
Ava looked at Marcus.
And the fear returned to his face.
"Because she found something.""
The room went still.
"What did she find?""
Ava's fingers tightened around her purse.
"Something Marcus has been hiding from both of you.""
Both of you.
The words echoed.
I looked at Marcus.
"What does that mean?""
He didn't speak.
Ava opened the door.
"I think you should ask him about the night Elena disappeared.""
My heart stopped.
"Disappeared?""
The door closed.
And Marcus and I stood alone in the kitchen.
For the first time in seven years, I looked at my husband and wondered if I had ever truly known him.
Then his phone buzzed on the counter.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
I saw the name.
*Elena.*
And beneath it was a message.
Three words.
May you like
Three words that made Marcus drop his phone.
*She knows everything.*
