Chapter 6: The Partner Who Was Never Mine
I left my mother’s room with one thought repeating in my head.
Daniel.
The man who held my hand.
The man who told me I deserved more.
The man who convinced me I had finally chosen the right person.
A man sent to destroy Marcus.
I found Daniel in the hospital hallway.
He was sitting alone.
When he saw me, he stood.
“Is your mother okay?””
I stared at him.
The question sounded so normal.
So caring.
That almost made it worse.
“How long?””
His face changed.
“What?””
“How long have you known?””
Daniel went still.
“Vanessa.””
“Don’t.””
My voice shook.
“Don’t say my name like you’re worried about me.””
He looked around.
“Can we talk somewhere private?””
“No.””
“Please.””
“No.””
People walked past us.
Doctors.
Visitors.
Nurses.
Nobody knew the person standing in front of me might have been a stranger all along.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“I never wanted this.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked down.
“I knew who your father was.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“When?””
“Before we met.””
I nodded slowly.
“And you still approached me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
“Why?””
Daniel swallowed.
“At first, it was business.””
“At first?””
He didn’t answer.
I laughed.
“Wow.””
“Vanessa—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You don’t get to explain this.””
“I do.””
“Why?””
“Because I actually did fall in love with you.””
I stared.
That was the cruelest part.
Because maybe he believed it.
Maybe somewhere along the way, the lie became real.
“My father paid you.””
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.””
“How much?””
He hesitated.
“Enough.””
I closed my eyes.
“Enough to ruin someone’s life?””
“No.””
“Then what was the plan?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Tell me.””
He sighed.
“Your father wanted information.””
“About Marcus.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Marcus was preparing something.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“He was planning to expose your father.””
The hallway went silent.
“Expose him for what?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“I don’t know everything.””
“Try.””
He rubbed his face.
“Your father had been using shell companies.””
“For what?””
“To hide money.””
I stared.
Marcus had never mentioned this.
Daniel continued.
“Marcus found evidence.””
My heart raced.
“And my father knew?””
“Yes.””
“That’s why he wanted him gone.””
Daniel nodded.
I looked away.
Everything suddenly made sense.
My father didn’t hate Marcus because he was beneath me.
He hated Marcus because Marcus could bring him down.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked broken.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of my father?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
That told me everything.
For the first time, I understood how powerful Richard Vale really was.
Not because people respected him.
Because people feared him.
My phone rang.
Marcus.
I answered.
“Hello?””
“Where are you?””
“At the hospital.””
“Are you alone?””
I looked at Daniel.
“No.””
A pause.
Then Marcus said:
“Leave now.””
My heart jumped.
“What?””
“Vanessa, listen to me.””
His voice was different.
Urgent.
“Someone accessed the Carter Dynamics security system.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone is inside my company.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
“Marcus…”
“I need you to leave the hospital.””
“Why?””
“Because whoever did this knows where you are.””
I turned.
At the end of the hallway, a man stood near the elevator.
Watching me.
I froze.
“Marcus.””
“What?””
“There’s someone here.””
The man stepped forward.
Slowly.
Then he smiled.
I recognized him.
Not because I knew him.
Because I had seen him before.
In my father’s office.
Years ago.
The man who always stood behind Richard Vale.
My father’s assistant.
My hands went cold.
“Marcus…”
“Vanessa?””
I whispered.
“He found me.””
The man stopped a few feet away.
Then said:
“Your father sends his regards.””
The call went silent.
Then Marcus’ voice came through.
“Vanessa, run.””
But it was too late.
The elevator doors behind the man opened.
And inside was my father.
Richard Vale looked exactly the same as I remembered.
Perfect suit.
Perfect smile.
Perfect control.
He stepped out and looked at me.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
And for the first time in my life…
May you like
I realized my father was not here to bring me home.
He was here to finish what he started.
