Chapter 3: The Secret Behind His Silence

I stared at the photo until my eyes burned.

It was old.

A picture of a handwritten letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that filled birthday cards and grocery lists throughout my childhood.

But I wasn’t focused on the handwriting.

I was focused on the first line.

*Marcus, I’m begging you. Do not tell Vanessa.*

My hands began shaking.

I read it again.

Then again.

Every time, the words became heavier.

Daniel found me sitting on the couch at sunrise.

“You didn’t sleep.””

I didn’t look up.

“Did you know about this?””

He walked closer.

“What?””

I turned the phone toward him.

The color drained from his face.

“Where did you get that?””

“That’s your question?””

“Vanessa…”

“Who sent this?””

Daniel sat down slowly.

“I don’t know.””

“Someone knows something.””

He looked at the screen.

“What does the rest say?””

I scrolled.

Only one more sentence.

*He protected you when you hated him.*

I stood.

“I’m going to see Marcus.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“Vanessa, think about this.””

“I have been thinking for four years.””

“Maybe you should slow down.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Slow down?””

I looked at him.

“My entire understanding of my life changed in one night.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he understood.

An hour later, I stood outside Carter Dynamics headquarters.

The building was enormous.

Glass and steel reaching into the sky.

I had walked past buildings like this before.

Never knowing one of them belonged to the man I abandoned.

The receptionist looked up.

“Can I help you?””

“I’m here to see Marcus Carter.””

She checked her computer.

“Do you have an appointment?””

“No.””

Her expression changed.

“I’m sorry, but Mr. Carter has a very full schedule.””

I almost laughed.

Four years ago, I could walk into Marcus’ apartment without knocking.

Now I needed permission.

“Please tell him Vanessa Brooks is here.””

The receptionist typed.

Then stopped.

Her eyes lifted.

“You’re Vanessa?””

My stomach tightened.

“You know me?””

She hesitated.

“Mr. Carter asked that if you ever came here…”

My heart started beating faster.

“What?””

She reached beneath the desk and pulled out a sealed envelope.

“He wanted you to have this.””

I stared at it.

“How long has he had that?””

“Four years.””

The hallway suddenly felt too quiet.

“He was expecting me?””

The receptionist looked uncomfortable.

“No.””

She lowered her voice.

“He was hoping.””

I took the envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Not printed.

Written.

In Marcus’ handwriting.

I went to a nearby empty conference room and opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Vanessa,

If you are reading this, then something happened that made you look back.

I stopped.

My eyes moved across the page.

I don’t know if you came because you’re angry, curious, or because you finally want answers.

But you deserve the truth.

I kept reading.

The first thing I learned was that Marcus had not been hiding his success.

He had been hiding something else.

Something involving my family.

Something involving my mother.

Something involving the day I left him.

The letter continued.

Four years ago, when you told me you were leaving, I knew you believed I was failing.

But I never told you the reason I was working so hard.

It wasn’t because I wanted money.

It wasn’t because I wanted status.

It was because I promised someone I would protect you.

I stopped reading.

Someone.

Who?

The next sentence made my entire body freeze.

Your mother came to me before you left.

I looked at the words.

Again.

And again.

Your mother knew about Carter Dynamics before you did.

She knew what I had built.

She knew why I kept fighting.

And she begged me not to tell you.

The conference room door opened.

I looked up.

Marcus stood there.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he quietly closed the door.

“You found the letter.””

I held it up.

“What is this?””

Marcus looked exhausted.

Not like a CEO.

Not like a powerful businessman.

Like the man I remembered.

The man who carried too much alone.

“I was hoping you would never need to read it.””

“Why?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because the truth would hurt you.””

I stood.

“My mother knew?””

Marcus nodded.

“Why?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“Because she was the reason you thought I had nothing.””

I felt my breath disappear.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at me.

And for the first time in four years, I saw pain in his eyes.

“Vanessa…”

He took a breath.

“Your mother paid me to leave your life.””

The room went completely silent.

I stared at him.

“No.””

Marcus didn’t move.

“She thought I wasn’t good enough for you.””

“That’s impossible.””

“She offered me money.””

My voice cracked.

“And you took it?””

His expression broke.

“No.””

“Then why?””

Marcus looked at the letter in my hand.

“Because she threatened to destroy everything I had built.””

I stepped back.

“What?””

Before Marcus could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Recognition.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A pause.

Then Marcus’ voice became cold.

“Where did you get this number?””

I watched him listen.

Then his eyes slowly moved toward me.

“Vanessa.””

My heart stopped.

The way he said my name told me everything.

Something was wrong.

Marcus lowered the phone.

“He knows you’re here.””

“Who?””

Marcus stared at the doorway.

May you like

Then whispered a name I never expected to hear.

“Your father.””
