Chapter 5: The Truth She Buried
The hospital smelled exactly the way I remembered.
Antiseptic.
Cold air.
Quiet footsteps.
The kind of place where everyone whispered because nobody knew if the next conversation would bring good news or destroy someone.
My mother lay behind a glass wall in the intensive care unit.
Machines surrounded her.
For years, I had imagined confronting her.
I imagined yelling.
Demanding answers.
Asking why she never defended me when I left Marcus.
Why she never told me what she knew.
Why she let me believe the worst about the man who loved me.
But standing there, watching her barely move, anger became harder to hold.
Marcus stood beside me.
Quiet.
Always quiet.
“You can hate her later,” he said.
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Right now, she’s still your mother.””
I hated that he was right.
Even after everything.
Even after learning she had lied.
I still wanted her to open her eyes.
A doctor approached.
“Family of Elaine Vale?””
I stepped forward.
“I’m her daughter.””
The doctor nodded.
“She suffered a stroke early this morning.””
My stomach dropped.
“Will she recover?””
“We don’t know yet.””
Marcus placed a hand lightly on my shoulder.
The gesture was familiar.
Too familiar.
I almost pulled away.
But I didn’t.
The doctor looked between us.
“She left instructions before her condition worsened.””
“What instructions?””
The doctor hesitated.
“She requested that Marcus Carter be contacted.””
I froze.
My eyes moved to Marcus.
He looked just as surprised.
“She asked for him?””
The doctor nodded.
“She specifically said, ‘He knows the truth.’”
My chest tightened.
A nurse handed Marcus an envelope.
Another one.
Just like before.
Except this one had my mother’s handwriting.
Marcus stared at it.
“I haven’t seen this.””
I looked at him.
“Open it.””
He hesitated.
Then opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
He read silently.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Marcus handed it to me.
I looked at the page.
Marcus,
If you are reading this, then I failed to fix what I broke.
My hands started shaking.
I continued.
I thought I was protecting my daughter.
I was wrong.
I thought Richard’s way was the only way to keep her safe.
I was wrong.
I looked at Marcus.
He looked away.
The letter continued.
Vanessa deserves the truth.
Not the version I created.
Not the version Richard wanted.
The truth.
I swallowed.
My mother had written my name.
Not as an accusation.
As an apology.
The next line made me stop breathing.
Marcus never abandoned you.
You abandoned him because I made sure you believed he had abandoned himself.
I lowered the paper.
Everything inside me felt heavy.
Marcus looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I laughed softly.
“Why are you apologizing?””
“Because I should have fought harder.””
“You were being threatened.””
“I should have told you.””
I looked at him.
“Why didn’t you?””
His eyes were tired.
“Because your mother begged me.””
I looked back at the letter.
“Why?””
Marcus walked toward the waiting area.
“She said Richard had a plan.””
“What plan?””
He stopped.
“She said he wanted to control your marriage.””
I stared.
“What?””
“She knew Richard wanted Daniel near you.””
My heart sank.
“So Daniel…”
Marcus nodded.
“He was never random.””
I sat down.
All the pieces I refused to see began connecting.
Daniel’s sudden appearance.
His perfect timing.
His access to Carter Dynamics.
His interest in me.
The way my father approved of him immediately.
I covered my face.
“I feel so stupid.””
Marcus sat beside me.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“I thought I was choosing a better life.””
“You were choosing what you thought was right.””
“I hurt you.””
Marcus didn’t deny it.
That hurt more.
“I did love you,” I whispered.
His eyes moved to mine.
Past tense.
I hated that.
“I loved you too.””
The simplicity of his answer broke something inside me.
No anger.
No revenge.
Just truth.
A nurse approached.
“Ms. Vale?””
I stood.
“Yes?””
“Your mother woke up.””
My heart stopped.
“Can I see her?””
The nurse nodded.
“One person at a time.””
I looked at Marcus.
He stepped back.
“You should go.””
I entered the room alone.
My mother looked smaller than I remembered.
Older.
Fragile.
Her eyes opened slowly.
When she saw me, tears immediately filled them.
“Vanessa.””
I stood beside the bed.
“Why?””
That was the only word I could say.
Her lips trembled.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Losing you.””
I laughed sadly.
“You lost me anyway.””
Tears rolled down her face.
“I thought Richard could protect you.””
“By destroying the person I loved?””
She closed her eyes.
“I made a mistake.””
I looked at her.
“Tell me everything.””
She was silent.
Then whispered:
“Your father didn’t just want Marcus gone.””
A chill moved through me.
“What else?””
My mother gripped my hand weakly.
“He wanted Carter Dynamics.””
I frowned.
“But Marcus wouldn’t sell.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“That’s why Richard changed his plan.””
I leaned closer.
“What plan?””
My mother looked toward the door.
Like she was afraid someone was listening.
Then she whispered:
“He didn’t send Daniel to replace Marcus.””
I froze.
“Then why?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“He sent Daniel to destroy him.””
The heart monitor beside her suddenly started beeping faster.
I stood.
“Mom?””
She looked at me.
May you like
And with the last strength she had, she said:
“Vanessa… Daniel is not who you think he is.””
