Chapter 14: The Empire Built on Lies

The police called it a breakthrough.

The newspapers called it the biggest corporate scandal of the decade.

People who had once praised Richard Vale now pretended they had never heard his name.

That was how the world worked.

People loved success.

Until they discovered what it cost.

But for me, the biggest discovery wasn’t about my father.

It was about my family.

My grandfather.

Marcus spent three days searching through old records.

Not because he wanted revenge.

Because he needed answers.

I watched him work.

The same way he always worked.

Quietly.

Patiently.

Like every detail mattered.

“Did you sleep?””

I asked him one night.

He didn’t look away from the computer.

“A little.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Yes.””

I smiled slightly.

It was the first normal moment we had shared in weeks.

Then his expression changed.

“I found something.””

The smile disappeared.

“What?””

He turned the screen toward me.

An old newspaper article.

Twenty-five years old.

Missing businessman.

Thomas Vale.

My grandfather.

The article said he disappeared during a business trip.

No evidence.

No suspects.

No answers.

But beneath it was a scanned police document.

Marcus pointed.

“Look.””

I read the report.

A witness statement.

A name.

Richard Vale.

My father.

“He reported him missing.””

“Yes.””

“So?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Read the timeline.””

I did.

My grandfather disappeared on Monday.

My father reported him missing on Friday.

“Why wait four days?””

“I don’t know.””

But I did.

A feeling.

A terrible one.

“Because he needed time.””

Marcus nodded.

“Exactly.””

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Vanessa.””

His voice sounded different.

Calmer.

“I need to tell you something.””

I looked at Marcus.

“What?””

“I found the person who helped your father hide everything.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

“Your grandfather’s lawyer.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He’s alive.””

Marcus immediately stood.

“Where?””

Daniel gave an address.

A small town outside the city.

An old retirement community.

“We need to go.””

Two hours later, we arrived.

The man who answered the door looked nothing like I expected.

I expected someone powerful.

Someone intimidating.

Instead, I saw an elderly man with tired eyes.

When he saw me, he started crying.

“Vanessa.””

I stopped.

“You know me?””

He nodded.

“I knew your mother when she was your age.””

“Who are you?””

He looked at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“My name is Arthur Bell.””

He stepped aside.

“I owe your family the truth.””

Inside his small apartment, old documents covered the table.

Photos.

Contracts.

Letters.

Evidence from a life buried.

Arthur sat down.

“Your grandfather discovered Richard was moving money through fake companies.””

I listened.

“He tried to stop him.””

“How?””

“He collected evidence.””

“Where?””

Arthur looked at Marcus.

“That’s the problem.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What?””

“The evidence disappeared.””

My stomach tightened.

“But my father didn’t get away.””

“No.””

Arthur looked at me.

“Because your grandfather made a backup.””

Marcus froze.

“A backup?””

Arthur nodded.

“He knew Richard would come after him.””

“Where is it?””

Arthur looked at me.

“Your grandfather trusted one person.””

I already knew.

“My mother.””

Arthur nodded.

“She hid it.””

My mother.

Again.

Always another secret.

“Where?””

Arthur pointed toward a box.

Inside was an old photograph.

My grandfather standing beside my mother.

She looked young.

On the back of the photo were words.

*For Vanessa. When she is ready.*

My hands shook.

“What is this?””

Arthur smiled sadly.

“Your grandfather knew someday you would need the truth.””

I turned the photograph over.

A hidden compartment had been carved into the frame.

Inside was a small key.

Marcus picked it up.

“What does this open?””

Arthur looked at him.

“Something Richard never found.””

“What?””

Arthur’s expression became serious.

“The original company records.””

I stared.

“But Marcus already had evidence.””

“Yes.””

Arthur nodded.

“But this proves everything.””

“What everything?””

Arthur looked directly at me.

“Your father didn’t steal Carter Dynamics from Marcus.””

The room went silent.

“He stole the company idea from your grandfather.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Arthur continued.

“Richard built his empire by taking your grandfather’s research.””

My heart pounded.

“He stole from his own father?””

“Yes.””

Arthur looked at me.

“And then he spent his life making sure nobody discovered it.””

The truth was worse than I imagined.

My father wasn’t just a corrupt businessman.

He was someone who built everything on another person’s stolen dream.

Marcus looked at the key.

“We need to find what it opens.””

Arthur nodded.

“You do.””

“Why?””

Because Arthur looked terrified.

“Because Richard knew about the key.””

I froze.

“What?””

Arthur looked toward the window.

“He’s been waiting for you to find it.””

A shadow moved outside.

Marcus immediately stood.

“Everyone down.””

The window shattered.

A loud sound filled the room.

Not an explosion.

A warning.

When I looked up, Arthur was gone.

Only the key remained.

And on the table was a note.

May you like

Three words.

*Ask Marcus why.*
