Chapter 1: The Shoes That Changed Everything
The first thing I noticed about Marcus Carter was not his face.
It was his shoes.
Plain black leather.
No designer label. No expensive shine. No ridiculous gold detail that screamed for attention.
At the Carter Dynamics leadership gala, where men wore watches worth more than houses and women carried handbags that could pay a year of rent, Marcus looked almost invisible.
And somehow, that bothered me more than if he had arrived wearing diamonds.
Because four years ago, when I walked away from him, I was certain I had left behind a man who would never become anything.
I was certain I had chosen correctly.
The ballroom of the Halston Grand looked like a movie set that night. Floor-to-ceiling windows reflected the city lights below. A jazz quartet played softly beside a tower of champagne glasses. Executives laughed beneath crystal chandeliers while discussing mergers, investments, and companies most people would never hear about.
I loved every second of it.
For the first time in my life, I felt like I belonged somewhere powerful.
My fingers rested around Daniel Brooks’ arm as we moved through the crowd.
Daniel noticed everything.
The right restaurants.
The right people.
The right conversations.
He understood the world I wanted.
“You know how many people would do anything to be here?”” I whispered.
Daniel smiled.
“Probably a lot.””
I looked around the room.
“This is where decisions happen.””
Daniel adjusted his jacket.
“And one day, maybe we’ll be the ones making them.””
That sentence made me smile.
Maybe that was why I liked Daniel.
He talked about tomorrow like it was already guaranteed.
Marcus had never done that.
Marcus always talked about patience.
Saving.
Building.
Waiting.
I hated waiting.
When I was with Marcus, I felt like I was standing outside a locked door while he searched for the key.
He was always working.
Always planning.
Always saying the same thing.
“I’m building something bigger than us.””
At the time, I thought it was an excuse.
A beautiful excuse men gave when they couldn’t provide the life their partners wanted.
I wanted vacations.
I wanted luxury.
I wanted proof that my future was secure.
Marcus wanted spreadsheets.
That was the difference.
So I left.
I chose someone who could give me what Marcus couldn’t.
Or at least what I thought he couldn’t.
Then, across the ballroom, I saw him.
At first, my brain refused to accept it.
Marcus stood near the windows, speaking quietly with an older man in a tuxedo.
No flashy entrance.
No crowd around him.
No desperate attempt to prove anything.
He looked exactly like the man I remembered.
Calm.
Quiet.
Almost frustratingly confident.
Daniel followed my gaze.
“What?””
I took a slow sip of champagne.
“You’re not going to believe who that is.””
Daniel looked over.
“Who?””
“My ex.””
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
“That guy?””
I smiled.
“Yeah.””
For some reason, seeing Marcus there made me feel relieved.
He looked ordinary.
That meant I had been right.
That meant I had not thrown away something valuable.
I leaned closer to Daniel.
“He used to tell me he was going to build a company.””
Daniel laughed.
“Did he?””
“Apparently not.””
I watched Marcus.
Four years.
Four years without seeing him.
I expected anger.
Maybe sadness.
Instead, I felt something else.
Victory.
I wanted him to see me.
I wanted him to see Daniel.
I wanted him to understand that I had moved on.
“Come on,” I said.
Daniel frowned.
“Where?””
“I want to say hello.””
“Are you sure?””
I smiled.
“Of course.””
We crossed the ballroom.
Marcus noticed me before I reached him.
His expression changed slightly.
Not shock.
Not pain.
Just recognition.
“Vanessa.””
The way he said my name irritated me.
Too calm.
“Marcus.””
His eyes moved briefly to Daniel.
Then back to me.
“It's been a long time.””
“Almost four years.””
He nodded.
“Yeah.””
I looked him over.
The suit.
The simple watch.
The shoes.
“You look…”
I paused.
Marcus waited.
“Comfortable.””
A small smile appeared.
“I am.””
I laughed.
“Still the same.””
“What does that mean?””
“You know.””
“No. I don’t.””
I looked around the room.
“The whole thing.””
Marcus followed my eyes.
“The gala?””
I smiled.
“The level.””
Daniel shifted beside me.
Marcus looked at him.
Then back at me.
“I see.””
I introduced them.
“This is Daniel Brooks.””
Daniel extended his hand.
“Nice to meet you.””
Marcus shook it.
“Marcus Carter.””
Daniel froze.
Only for a second.
But I noticed.
“Carter?”” Daniel repeated.
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
I laughed.
“Don’t make it weird. Carter is a common name.””
Daniel didn’t laugh.
He just stared at Marcus.
“You work here?””
Marcus looked toward the ballroom.
“Something like that.””
I rolled my eyes.
“There he is.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Who?””
“Marcus always talked like that. Always mysterious.””
I smiled.
“He used to tell me he was going to change everything.””
Marcus looked at me.
“I remember saying I was going to work hard.””
“No, you said more than that.””
“Did I?””
“Yes.””
I laughed.
“You said you were building something.””
Marcus nodded.
“I was.””
The confidence in his voice annoyed me.
Because he wasn’t embarrassed.
He wasn’t defensive.
He wasn’t trying to explain himself.
He simply said it like it was a fact.
Before I could respond, an older man approached us.
“Mr. Carter.””
Everything around us seemed to slow.
Marcus turned.
“Yes, Howard?””
The man handed him a folder.
“The acquisition papers are ready.””
My smile disappeared.
“Acquisition?””
The older man nodded politely.
“The board is waiting upstairs.””
Marcus accepted the folder.
“I’ll be there shortly.””
Then Howard looked at Daniel.
“Mr. Brooks.””
Daniel immediately straightened.
“Mr. Langford.””
“The presentation you delivered this morning was impressive.””
“Thank you.””
Howard glanced at me.
Then at Marcus.
“Will you be joining the board dinner afterward?””
Marcus looked at me for one brief second.
“No.””
Howard nodded and walked away.
The silence afterward felt heavier than the music.
I turned to Daniel.
“What was that?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He looked uncomfortable.
For the first time since I met him, Daniel looked unsure.
“That’s Marcus Carter.””
I frowned.
“I know.””
“No, Vanessa.””
His voice became quieter.
“You don’t.””
Marcus closed the folder.
I looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel swallowed.
“He’s not just someone who works here.””
A strange feeling entered my chest.
Something I didn’t want to admit.
Fear.
“Then who is he?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
And Marcus looked back at him.
May you like
Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.
“Vanessa… this is the founder and CEO of Carter Dynamics.””
