Chapter 13: The Truth My Mother Hid
The hardest truths are never the ones we expect.
I thought my father would be the final betrayal.
I thought Richard Vale was the monster hiding behind every locked door, every broken relationship, every decision I regretted.
I thought once he was exposed, everything would finally make sense.
But life had one more secret waiting for me.
My mother.
The woman who held my hand when I was sick.
The woman who cried when I moved away.
The woman who told me she only wanted to protect me.
She had been protecting something else.
Marcus and I sat in his office two days after the warehouse.
The world had changed overnight.
News outlets were everywhere.
Investigations had started.
Carter Dynamics was surrounded by reporters.
Richard Vale’s empire was collapsing piece by piece.
But none of that mattered.
Not compared to the file Marcus placed in front of me.
I stared at it.
“What is this?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That was becoming a pattern.
Marcus had always believed silence could prevent pain.
He still hadn’t learned that sometimes silence created more.
“It’s a financial record.””
“From my father?””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Then who?””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“Your mother.””
My chest tightened.
“No.””
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
I pushed the file away.
“She was manipulated.””
“She was.””
“Then why are you showing me this?””
“Because manipulation doesn’t erase choices.””
The words hurt.
Because they were fair.
I opened the file.
The first page was a bank transfer.
A large payment.
From an account connected to Richard Vale.
To an account under Elaine Vale.
My mother.
My hands became cold.
“She took money?””
Marcus nodded.
“Four years ago.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked up.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
That surprised me.
Because Marcus always had answers.
“Then find out.””
“I tried.””
“And?””
“She refused to talk.””
I looked at him.
“She’s my mother.””
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t understand.””
Marcus went quiet.
“You’re right.””
He looked away.
“I don’t know what it feels like to find out the person who raised you lied.””
I softened slightly.
Because there was something in his voice.
A memory.
A wound.
“What happened to your family?””
Marcus looked at the window.
“My father left when I was young.””
I waited.
“He promised he would come back.””
A pause.
“He never did.””
I swallowed.
“That’s why you hate promises.””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“Maybe.””
For the first time, I saw how much of Marcus was built from old pain.
The patience.
The discipline.
The refusal to depend on anyone.
He wasn’t cold.
He was careful.
My phone rang.
Mom.
I stared at the screen.
Marcus noticed.
“You don’t have to answer.””
“Yes, I do.””
I picked up.
“Mom.””
Her voice was weak.
“Vanessa.””
The sound of her voice almost broke me.
“I know.””
Silence.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
A long pause.
“Marcus showed you.””
“No.””
I looked at the file.
“I found out.””
My mother started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
“Because I was scared.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
“You let me hate him.””
“I know.””
“You watched me believe he abandoned me.””
“I know.””
The repetition made my anger grow.
“Then why?””
My mother cried quietly.
“Because Richard convinced me that if I didn’t cooperate, he would destroy everything.””
“You mean the company.””
“No.””
Her voice changed.
“You.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Richard knew something about you.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
My mother took a shaky breath.
“When you were younger, you had a medical condition.””
I sat up.
“What?””
“You don’t remember because you were too young.””
Marcus looked at me.
I ignored him.
“What condition?””
“A serious one.””
My mother’s voice trembled.
“Your father used it against me.””
I felt sick.
“He said he had resources. Doctors. Connections.””
“And you believed him?””
“I was your mother.””
The words hurt.
Because I understood.
Fear.
A parent terrified of losing a child.
“But why Marcus?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because Richard knew Marcus would never hurt you.””
I didn’t understand.
“What?””
“He knew Marcus was the one person who could protect you from him.””
I stared.
“Then why destroy us?””
My mother whispered:
“Because Richard couldn’t control Marcus.””
The room went silent.
“He didn’t want you away from Marcus because Marcus was bad.””
My mother started crying harder.
“He wanted you away because Marcus was good.””
I looked at Marcus.
His expression changed.
Pain.
Not surprise.
Like he already knew.
“Mom…”
“I made a deal.””
My heart sank.
“What deal?””
“I would help Richard separate you from Marcus.””
My throat tightened.
“And in exchange?””
“He promised he would stop interfering.””
“Did he?””
“No.””
Of course not.
People like my father never stopped.
My mother continued.
“But there is something you don’t know.””
“What?””
“Marcus was never the first person Richard tried to destroy.””
I looked at him.
“Who was?””
My mother whispered:
“Your grandfather.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Your grandfather discovered what Richard was doing years ago.””
Marcus’ face changed.
“Vanessa…”
My mother continued.
“He tried to expose him.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What happened?””
Silence.
Then:
“He disappeared.””
The room went still.
Marcus stood.
“What?””
My mother repeated:
“He disappeared.””
Marcus’ expression became unreadable.
“Your grandfather didn’t leave.””
My heart started racing.
“What are you saying?””
May you like
My mother whispered:
“Richard made sure nobody found him.””
