Chapter 9: The Last Secret of the Hawthorne House
Adrian stared at the name on the file.
For a moment, the entire world seemed to slow down.
The person who accessed Mrs. Parker’s security code.
The person who entered Mia’s room.
The person who had been moving through the shadows of the Hawthorne mansion.
The name written on the paper was not Ethan.
Not Vanessa.
Not even someone outside the family.
It was Daniel Cross.
The former family attorney.
The man who had handled Hawthorne legal affairs for over thirty years.
The man everyone believed was dead.
Adrian looked up slowly.
“That’s impossible.””
The security officer lowered his voice.
“We confirmed the identity through the access records.””
“Daniel Cross died two years ago.””
“Yes, sir.””
“Then explain this.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Daniel wasn’t dead.””
Adrian turned.
“What?””
Ethan looked exhausted.
“I found out months ago.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I was trying to prove it.””
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“You suspected the man who changed Mia’s documents was alive and hiding, and you said nothing?””
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Because I didn’t know who else was involved.””
Adrian looked around the room.
The same room where everyone had been hiding pieces of the truth.
“You all knew something.””
Nobody disagreed.
That was the most painful part.
Everyone had been protecting something.
Everyone had decided what he deserved to know.
And meanwhile, Mia was the one paying the price.
“Where is Daniel now?”” Adrian asked.
The security officer looked down.
“That’s the problem.””
“What problem?””
“He disappeared last night.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“After entering my house?””
“Yes.””
A terrible realization settled over him.
Daniel wasn’t running because he was caught.
He was running because he had finished something.
“What was he looking for?”” Adrian asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“The final document.””
Everyone turned.
Adrian looked at her.
“You know about that?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Explain.””
She took a breath.
“When your wife created Mia’s trust, there was one condition that nobody knew about.””
“What condition?””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
“The trust wasn’t only about money.””
Adrian waited.
“It was about control.””
The words felt familiar.
“What does that mean?””
“Your wife was afraid someone would use Mia’s inheritance to control her life.””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
Then Mrs. Parker.
Then back at Vanessa.
“So she created a safeguard.””
“Yes.””
“What kind of safeguard?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“She placed the final decision in the hands of Mia.””
Everyone became silent.
Adrian frowned.
“She was six years old.””
“Not when the condition activated.””
“What happens when it activates?””
Vanessa looked at the document.
“It means Mia will have complete authority over her trust when she turns eighteen.””
Adrian understood.
The money.
The property.
The Hawthorne assets.
None of it belonged to the adults fighting over it.
It belonged to Mia.
The person everyone had underestimated.
“The person who controls the future,” Adrian whispered.
“Exactly,” Vanessa said.
Mrs. Parker looked down.
“Your wife wanted Mia to choose for herself.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
That was the kind of person his wife had been.
She wasn’t trying to create a wealthy child.
She was trying to create a free one.
But someone had tried to take that freedom away.
“Daniel changed the documents,” Adrian said.
“Yes,” Vanessa replied.
“And Ethan searched the garden because he knew something was hidden.””
“Yes.””
“And you threw Mia’s backpack into the pond because you thought the document was inside.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Do you understand what you did?””
Her face tightened.
“Yes.””
“You scared her.””
“I know.””
“You made her believe nobody would listen.””
A tear appeared in Vanessa’s eyes.
“I know.””
For once, there was no excuse.
No explanation.
Just regret.
But Adrian wasn’t finished.
“Why did Daniel threaten you?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because I knew too much.””
“About what?””
“About what happened before your wife died.””
The room became still.
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“What happened?””
Vanessa looked at Mrs. Parker.
Then Ethan.
Then finally Adrian.
“Your wife discovered Daniel had been changing legal documents.””
Adrian froze.
“She confronted him.””
“When?””
“Three weeks before she passed away.””
The memory hurt.
Three weeks.
He remembered those days.
Her tired smile.
The way she held Mia longer than usual.
The way she kept saying she wanted to talk about the future.
“I thought she was just scared because she was sick,” Adrian whispered.
“She wasn’t.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She was investigating.””
Adrian looked at the letter.
His wife had been fighting for Mia even when she knew she might not be there.
“What did Daniel do?””
Vanessa answered quietly.
“He tried to convince her that Mia needed someone stronger to manage everything.””
“Someone like him?””
“Yes.””
Adrian’s hands tightened.
“He wanted control.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t she expose him?””
“Because she didn’t know who else was involved.””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
The question was obvious.
“Was my brother involved?””
Ethan answered before Vanessa could.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
Ethan swallowed.
“I was angry at Adrian. I was jealous. I thought I deserved more.””
He looked toward Mia’s room.
“But I never wanted to take from her.””
The honesty surprised Adrian.
Ethan continued.
“I found out about Daniel because your wife left me a message.””
“A message?””
“She knew I was bitter.””
Adrian looked at him.
“And she still trusted you?””
Ethan nodded.
“She said anger didn’t make me evil. But what I did with that anger would decide who I became.””
The words stayed in the room.
Because they applied to everyone.
Vanessa.
Ethan.
Even Adrian.
Everyone had choices.
Some had chosen fear.
Some had chosen pride.
Some had chosen silence.
The security officer interrupted.
“Mr. Hawthorne.””
Adrian turned.
“We received another message.””
Everyone became tense.
“From who?””
The officer handed him a phone.
Unknown number.
Adrian opened it.
One sentence appeared.
You found the truth too late.
Then another message arrived.
A video.
Adrian pressed play.
The footage showed Daniel Cross.
Older.
Alive.
Standing in an unfamiliar room.
But he wasn’t alone.
Someone was sitting across from him.
Someone whose face remained hidden.
Daniel spoke first.
“You said the father would never discover the final file.””
A second voice answered.
“I underestimated him.””
Adrian’s heart stopped.
Because he recognized that voice.
The video continued.
Daniel asked:
“What happens now?””
The hidden person replied:
“Now we take Mia away from him.””
Adrian stepped back.
The room went silent.
Ethan looked at him.
“Who is it?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
He knew the voice.
A voice from his past.
A voice connected to the Hawthorne family.
A voice he never expected to hear again.
Then the hidden person moved closer to the camera.
The face slowly appeared.
And Adrian felt the ground disappear beneath him.
Because the person behind everything…
May you like
Was the one person his wife had trusted before anyone else.
Mia’s own grandmother.
