Chapter 8: The Truth That Was Buried for Years
The photo on Adrian’s phone felt heavier than a piece of paper.
His fingers tightened around the device.
The image showed Mia sleeping peacefully.
Her small hands were wrapped around her blanket.
Her notebook sat beside her.
She looked safe.
But Adrian knew the truth.
She wasn’t.
Someone had taken that picture.
Someone had been close enough to enter her room.
Close enough to watch her.
And close enough to hurt her.
“Where is she?””
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Mrs. Parker immediately understood.
“Mia?””
Adrian nodded.
They rushed upstairs.
The hallway seemed longer than it ever had before.
Every shadow felt like a threat.
Every sound made him turn.
When Adrian opened Mia’s bedroom door, she was still sleeping.
He crossed the room quickly.
“Mia.””
Her eyes slowly opened.
“Daddy?””
He immediately softened.
“I’m here.””
She looked confused.
“Why are you awake?””
Adrian forced a smile.
“Bad dream.””
Mia looked at him carefully.
“Did you have one?””
He paused.
Then nodded.
“Yes.””
She reached out her little hand.
“You’re okay.””
The innocence of the moment almost broke him.
A child comforting her father.
A child who had already been asked to be too brave.
“I’m okay,” he whispered.
Behind him, security officers searched the room.
Nothing was missing.
Nothing looked disturbed.
But that somehow made it worse.
Because whoever had entered didn’t come to steal.
They came to send a message.
After Mia fell asleep again, Adrian walked downstairs.
The entire house was secured.
Every door checked.
Every camera reviewed.
But one question remained.
How did someone bypass security?
The head of security placed a tablet on the table.
“Mr. Hawthorne.””
“Tell me.””
“We reviewed the footage.””
“And?””
“There was no forced entry.””
Adrian looked at him.
“No forced entry?””
The officer shook his head.
“The person used an authorized access code.””
A cold feeling moved through Adrian.
“Whose code?””
The officer hesitated.
“Mrs. Parker’s.””
The room went silent.
Mrs. Parker looked shocked.
“No.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Your code?””
“I would never—”
“I know.””
The words came immediately.
Mrs. Parker stopped.
Adrian continued.
“I know you wouldn’t hurt her.””
“But someone used my access.””
“Yes.””
The officer looked down.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
“The code was used from inside the house.””
Adrian frowned.
“Inside?””
“Yes.””
That changed everything.
The person who entered Mia’s room was already inside the mansion.
Someone who belonged there.
Someone who knew the layout.
Someone who knew the security system.
Adrian looked around the room.
Vanessa.
Ethan.
Mrs. Parker.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
And now everyone had to be questioned.
The next morning, Adrian called everyone into the study.
The room where family decisions had been made for generations.
But this time, there would be no pretending.
Ethan stood near the window.
Vanessa sat on the sofa.
Mrs. Parker remained beside Adrian.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Adrian placed the photograph on the table.
“This was sent to me last night.””
Vanessa looked at it.
Her face changed.
Ethan stepped forward.
“What is that?””
“Someone entered Mia’s room.””
The room exploded.
“What?””
“Who?””
“Is she okay?””
Adrian raised his hand.
Silence returned.
“The person used an access code.””
Everyone looked uncertain.
Then Adrian said:
“Mrs. Parker’s.””
All eyes moved toward her.
Vanessa immediately leaned back.
“I knew it.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Knew what?””
“That she was hiding something.””
Mrs. Parker looked hurt.
“Vanessa.””
“No, let’s stop pretending.””
Vanessa stood.
“For years, everyone has acted like Mrs. Parker is some innocent protector.””
Adrian watched her carefully.
“But?””
“But she knows more than she says.””
Mrs. Parker remained calm.
“I protected Mia.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Did you?””
Adrian noticed something.
Vanessa wasn’t angry.
She was afraid.
Fear often looked like aggression.
“What are you afraid of, Vanessa?”” Adrian asked.
She froze.
“I’m not afraid.””
“You are.””
“No.””
“You knew about the document.””
Silence.
“You knew about the trust.””
More silence.
“You knew something was hidden.””
Vanessa looked away.
Adrian continued.
“But someone else knows more.””
Her eyes moved toward Ethan.
And Ethan noticed.
“What?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Adrian looked at both of them.
“Enough secrets.””
He placed the old letter on the table.
“My wife knew something would happen.””
Nobody spoke.
“She knew someone would try to control Mia’s future.””
Ethan looked at the letter.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa whispered:
“What else did she say?””
Adrian looked at her.
“She said the person closest to the information wasn’t always closest to the heart.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Because she understood.
Adrian noticed.
“You know what that means.””
“No.””
“Then why do you look scared?””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
For the first time, she looked exhausted.
“I never wanted this.””
“What didn’t you want?””
She looked at the letter.
“The truth.””
Nobody moved.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“You need to tell him.””
Her expression changed.
“You’re not helping.””
“I’m tired of this.””
Adrian stared.
“Tired of what?””
Ethan looked at him.
“The lies.””
He walked toward the table.
“I found something else in the garden.””
He pulled out a small envelope.
Adrian recognized it.
Another hidden letter.
“Where did you get that?””
“From the fountain.””
“Why didn’t you show me?””
“Because I wasn’t sure who I could trust.””
The answer was honest.
Painfully honest.
Adrian opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note.
His wife’s handwriting again.
But this time, the message was shorter.
Adrian,
If Ethan finds this before you do, listen to him.
Adrian looked up.
Everyone was surprised.
He continued.
He will make mistakes. He will be angry. He will believe he is right.
But he is not the person I fear.
Adrian’s eyes moved lower.
Then he read the final lines.
The person I fear is the one who can make everyone believe they are innocent.
A silence filled the room.
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
Adrian looked at her.
The fear in her face was different now.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know who she meant.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t.””
“Then why did you say no?””
She looked away.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Vanessa sat down.
Her voice became smaller.
“Because I think I know.””
Adrian waited.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa looked at the letter.
Then at Mia’s bedroom door upstairs.
“I didn’t throw that backpack into the pond because I hated Mia.””
Adrian said nothing.
“I did it because I was trying to find out if the document was still inside.””
The confession shocked everyone.
“You were looking for it.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because someone threatened me.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The same person who changed the trust documents.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Name them.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because if they know I told you…”
She stopped.
Adrian’s voice became cold.
“They’ll come after Mia.””
Vanessa nodded.
And that was the moment everyone understood.
The threat was real.
But it was also the first honest thing Vanessa had said.
Then the study door opened.
Everyone turned.
A security officer stood there holding a file.
“Mr. Hawthorne.””
Adrian looked at him.
“What happened?””
The officer swallowed.
“We found the person who accessed Mrs. Parker’s security code.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Who?””
The officer placed the file on the desk.
Inside was a copy of the access record.
A name.
A time.
A location.
Adrian read it.
And his face changed.
Because the person who entered Mia’s room last night…
Was someone nobody had suspected.
Someone who had been protecting the family for years.
May you like
Someone who knew every secret in the Hawthorne mansion.
And someone who had just disappeared.
