Chapter 5: The Brother Who Wanted Mia’s Future

Adrian stared at the security notification.

For several seconds, the words on the screen refused to make sense.

His brother’s name was displayed clearly.

Ethan Hawthorne.

The same person who had hugged Mia at family gatherings.

The same person who brought her birthday presents and called her “little star.””

The same person who had stood beside Adrian after his wife’s funeral and promised to help protect the family.

Adrian felt something inside him crack.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“Ethan is at my house?”” Adrian asked.

Claire nodded.

“He entered through the east gate.””

“He still has access?””

“According to the system, yes.””

Adrian looked at the letter again.

The person who believes Mia’s future belongs to them.

His wife’s words suddenly felt heavier.

“She knew,” Adrian whispered.

Claire remained quiet.

“She knew Ethan might do this.””

“We don’t know everything yet,” Claire said carefully.

Adrian looked at her.

“But we know enough.””

He closed the folder.

“Call my security team.””

“Adrian—”

“Now.””

There was no anger in his voice.

Only certainty.

Meanwhile, at the Hawthorne mansion, Ethan walked through the grand entrance as if he owned the place.

Because for years, he believed he should have.

The Hawthorne family name was powerful.

The estate was valuable.

The company was respected.

And in Ethan’s mind, he had always been the person who understood the family legacy better than Adrian did.

He walked into the living room where Mia was sitting with Mrs. Parker, drawing in her new notebook.

The moment she saw him, her face brightened.

“Uncle Ethan!””

She jumped down from the sofa.

Ethan smiled.

“There she is.””

Mia ran toward him.

But she stopped halfway.

The memory of yesterday returned.

The pond.

The ruined backpack.

The feeling of nobody believing her.

She became cautious.

Ethan noticed.

“What’s wrong?””

Mia looked down.

“Nothing.””

He studied her.

Children were easier to read than adults.

“You seem quiet.””

“I’m okay.””

Ethan crouched.

“Did someone upset you?””

Mia didn’t answer.

Mrs. Parker stepped forward.

“She had a difficult first day.””

Ethan looked at the older woman.

“What happened?””

Before Mrs. Parker could respond, Vanessa entered the room.

Her face was calm again.

Too calm.

“Nothing serious,” Vanessa said.

Ethan looked between them.

“What happened?””

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

“It was just a misunderstanding.””

Mia lowered her head.

Ethan noticed.

“What kind of misunderstanding?””

Vanessa smiled.

“You know children.””

The words immediately bothered him.

Because they sounded exactly like the excuse someone used when they wanted a child’s voice ignored.

Mia quietly returned to her seat.

Ethan watched her.

Then looked at Vanessa.

“Explain.””

Vanessa’s expression changed slightly.

“You’re making this more serious than it is.””

“I asked you to explain.””

The room became uncomfortable.

Vanessa looked away.

“She accused me of ruining her backpack.””

Ethan frowned.

“And did you?””

“Of course not.””

Mrs. Parker looked down.

Ethan noticed.

He noticed everything.

“Then why does everyone look like they know more than you’re saying?””

Nobody answered.

At that moment, Ethan’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

A message appeared.

The document was discovered.

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Vanessa saw it.

And she knew.

They were no longer alone in this.

Back at the law office, Adrian arrived at the mansion within twenty minutes.

He didn’t call Ethan first.

He wanted to see his reaction.

He wanted to know if guilt appeared before excuses.

When Adrian entered the living room, everyone turned.

Mia immediately ran toward him.

“Daddy!””

He caught her.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

“You came back.””

“Of course.””

She held onto him tightly.

Adrian looked over her shoulder.

Ethan was standing near the fireplace.

Calm.

Almost too calm.

“Brother,” Ethan said.

Adrian didn’t respond warmly.

“Why are you here?””

Ethan smiled.

“I heard there was some trouble.””

“Who told you?””

A pause.

“Vanessa.””

Adrian looked at her.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

“You came here because Vanessa called you?””

“Yes.””

“And why exactly did she need you?””

Ethan shrugged.

“Family helps family.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Does it?””

The question carried weight.

Ethan’s smile disappeared.

“What’s that supposed to mean?””

Adrian walked toward the table and placed the folder down.

“The trust documents.””

The room changed instantly.

Vanessa went still.

Ethan’s eyes moved to the folder.

Just briefly.

But Adrian saw.

“You know what that is.””

Ethan recovered quickly.

“I know Mia has a trust.””

“You know more than that.””

“No.””

Adrian stared at him.

“You’re lying.””

Ethan laughed softly.

“Still doing that?””

“Doing what?””

“Assuming everyone is against you.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“This isn’t about me.””

“No?””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Because it always is.””

Mia watched them quietly.

She didn’t understand everything.

But she understood tension.

She understood when adults stopped pretending.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“You have spent years controlling everything.””

Adrian stared.

“What?””

“You control the company. The estate. Mia’s life.””

“My daughter’s life is not a business asset.””

Ethan smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The reason you don’t understand.””

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“Explain.””

Ethan looked around the mansion.

“This family was built by generations of Hawthornes. Not just you.””

“And?””

“And Mia is six years old.””

Adrian didn’t move.

“So?””

“So she doesn’t understand what she has.””

The words landed heavily.

Mia looked at him.

Even she understood that sounded wrong.

Adrian stepped forward.

“She understands more than you think.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No. She doesn’t.””

His voice became colder.

“She sees a father. A house. A garden. Toys.””

He pointed toward the folder.

“But she doesn’t understand millions of dollars, property rights, and the responsibility attached to the Hawthorne name.””

Adrian stared.

“And you do?””

“I do.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not hidden.

Not disguised.

Ethan believed Mia’s future belonged to someone else.

Adrian spoke quietly.

“Did you access the trust documents?””

Ethan said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Vanessa looked nervous.

“Ethan…”

He ignored her.

“You think I’m the villain because I want to protect this family.””

“No,” Adrian replied.

“I think you’re dangerous because you think protecting something means owning it.””

Silence.

Even Ethan had no immediate response.

Then Mia’s small voice interrupted.

“Uncle Ethan?””

Everyone looked at her.

She stood beside the sofa.

Holding her new notebook.

“Do you think I’m not smart?””

Ethan’s face changed.

For a moment, he almost looked guilty.

“Mia…”

“Because everyone keeps talking about me like I’m not here.””

Nobody spoke.

Mia hugged the notebook.

“I know I’m little.””

Her voice shook.

“But I know when someone is being mean.””

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

Because that was the same thing she had tried to say yesterday.

And nobody had listened.

Until now.

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

Mia nodded slowly.

“Maybe not.””

She looked at him.

“But I understand how it feels when someone doesn’t believe me.””

The room went silent.

Then the front door opened.

A security officer stepped inside.

“Mr. Hawthorne.””

Adrian turned.

“Yes?””

The officer held a tablet.

“We found something from the garden camera system.””

Adrian took it.

“What?””

The officer hesitated.

“It’s not about the backpack.””

Everyone looked confused.

“Then what?””

The officer glanced at Ethan.

“We found footage from last night.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Show me.””

The video loaded.

The timestamp appeared.

11:43 PM.

The garden was empty.

Until a figure entered.

Someone carrying a small key.

Someone who walked directly toward the hidden storage box near the fountain.

Adrian watched.

The figure turned slightly.

The camera captured the face.

And everyone in the room recognized it.

Because the person who had entered the garden the night before Mia’s first day of school…

Was not Vanessa.

It was Ethan.

And he wasn’t looking for the trust document.

May you like

He was looking for something else.

Something Adrian’s wife had hidden years ago.
