Thinking

Chapter 4: The Letter From a Mother Who Knew the Future

Adrian did not move after the call ended.

The phone remained pressed against his ear, even though there was no longer anyone speaking.

The words repeated in his mind.

Someone inside your family would eventually try to take what belonged to Mia.

His wife had known.

She had been afraid.

And she had left behind a warning.

But why had she never told him?

Why had she trusted a hidden document more than the man who loved her?

“Adrian.””

Vanessa’s voice pulled him back.

He lowered the phone slowly.

For the first time in years, he looked at Vanessa like he was seeing a stranger.

“What else did my wife leave behind?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

“You just told me you were involved.””

“I was.””

“Then don’t stand there and pretend you know nothing.””

Vanessa looked away.

The anger in Adrian’s voice was controlled, but that made it more frightening.

He wasn’t shouting.

He wasn’t losing control.

He was thinking.

And Vanessa knew that was when Adrian Hawthorne was most dangerous.

“I was only supposed to help with the trust,” Vanessa said quietly.

“Only?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she think someone would try to take from Mia?””

Vanessa remained silent.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Answer me.””

“She didn’t trust everyone around you.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

Almost like she was afraid someone might hear.

“Your family.””

The answer surprised him.

“My family?””

“She believed there were people who cared more about the Hawthorne name than Mia.””

Adrian shook his head.

“That doesn’t explain why you were hiding the document.””

Vanessa’s expression tightened.

“Because I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

She took a breath.

“When I saw Mia carrying that backpack this morning, I recognized it.””

Adrian stared at her.

“What?””

“The backpack.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I knew there was something inside.””

The room went silent.

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“You knew?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I didn’t know exactly what. I just knew the document had been moved.””

“Moved by who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why did you throw it into the pond?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But no answer came.

Because there was no explanation that made it acceptable.

Adrian turned away.

The woman standing in front of him had just admitted something impossible.

She knew about the document.

She knew Mia’s backpack contained something important.

And instead of protecting a child, she tried to destroy the evidence.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Mia sat on her bed staring at the ceiling.

She had changed into pajamas, but she still couldn’t sleep.

The first day of school was supposed to be exciting.

She was supposed to tell her teacher about her drawing.

She was supposed to open her lunch box proudly.

She was supposed to come home smiling.

Instead, she came home feeling like her voice was too small.

A quiet knock came at her door.

“Mia?””

She sat up.

“Daddy?””

Adrian entered.

The serious expression from his office disappeared the moment he saw her.

He sat beside her.

“Can’t sleep?””

Mia shook her head.

“Did you find out about the paper?””

“Yes.””

“What was it?””

Adrian paused.

“It was something your mommy prepared for you.””

Mia’s eyes widened.

“Mommy?””

Adrian nodded.

The mention of her mother always made Mia quiet.

She had only been two years old when her mother passed away.

She remembered small things.

A perfume smell.

A warm hug.

A song someone used to sing before bedtime.

But most memories existed only through photographs.

“She knew about my school?”” Mia asked.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Adrian smiled sadly.

“Because your mom thought about your future every single day.””

Mia looked down.

“Did she think I would be brave?””

Adrian’s heart tightened.

“She knew you would be.””

Mia touched the edge of her blanket.

“But today I cried.””

Adrian shook his head.

“Brave people cry too.””

“They do?””

“Of course.””

“Even you?””

He smiled.

“Especially me.””

That made Mia giggle softly.

For a moment, the room felt peaceful.

Then Mia asked:

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Did Vanessa lie?””

Adrian became still.

He didn’t want to put adult problems on her shoulders.

But he also refused to make her doubt her own memory.

“Yes,” he said carefully.

“She did.””

Mia looked surprised.

“Why?””

Adrian looked toward the window.

“That’s what I’m trying to understand.””

The next morning, Adrian went directly to the law office that handled his wife’s estate.

He needed answers.

Not guesses.

Not assumptions.

Answers.

The office was located downtown in an old stone building that had represented the Hawthorne family for generations.

Claire Bennett, the attorney who called him, was waiting.

She was in her fifties, with silver hair and a calm expression that suggested she had carried many secrets throughout her career.

“Mr. Hawthorne,” she said.

“Claire.””

She looked at him carefully.

“You found the document.””

“Yes.””

“And Vanessa knows?””

Adrian stopped.

“You expected that?””

Claire sighed.

“That was always the risk.””

“What does that mean?””

She opened a locked cabinet.

Inside was a small black folder.

“This was prepared by your wife.””

Adrian stared at it.

“Why wasn’t I given this before?””

“Because of her instructions.””

“My wife’s instructions?””

Claire nodded.

“She said the folder should only be opened if one specific event happened.””

“What event?””

Claire looked directly at him.

“When someone attempted to remove Mia’s trust documents.””

Adrian felt cold.

“Someone tried to remove them.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Claire placed the folder on the desk.

“Yesterday.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“How do you know?””

“Because the trust system sent an alert.””

He looked confused.

“Alert?””

“The documents were moved from their original location.””

Adrian looked down.

“So someone accessed them.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Claire hesitated.

Then she opened another file.

“There is a record.””

She turned the screen toward him.

Adrian read the name.

His face hardened.

Because it wasn’t Vanessa’s name.

It wasn’t a stranger’s name.

It was someone he knew.

Someone who had been welcomed into his home.

Someone who had smiled at Mia.

“Impossible.””

Claire watched him carefully.

“That is why your wife prepared this.””

Adrian looked up.

“What is inside the folder?””

Claire slid it toward him.

“Everything she wanted Mia to know when the time came.””

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting immediately broke him.

He knew it.

He had seen it on birthday cards.

On grocery lists.

On notes left beside his coffee.

His wife’s handwriting.

His hands shook slightly.

He began reading.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, then something happened that I hoped would never happen.

I need you to listen carefully.

There are people who will tell you they love Mia. There are people who will say they want to protect her. But love is not proven by words.

It is proven by what someone does when nobody is watching.

Adrian stopped.

The sentence felt painfully familiar.

Like it had been written for the garden.

He continued.

The person I trusted with part of Mia’s future may one day make a choice that hurts her. If that happens, do not ask why they did it before you protect our daughter.

Protect her first.

Adrian closed his eyes.

His wife had known.

Not the details.

Not the exact moment.

But she had known someone would choose themselves over Mia.

Then he reached the final paragraph.

And his entire body went still.

There is one more thing you need to know.

The person who has access to Mia’s trust is not the greatest danger.

The greatest danger is the person who believes Mia’s future belongs to them.

A sound came from outside the office.

A phone vibrating.

Claire looked down at her desk.

Her assistant had sent an urgent message.

She read it.

Then her face changed.

“Mr. Hawthorne…”

Adrian looked up.

“What?””

Claire slowly turned the screen toward him.

A security notification had appeared.

A new person had entered the Hawthorne mansion.

Without permission.

Adrian stared at the name.

And felt the world shift beneath him.

Because the person standing inside his home was the last person he expected.

May you like

The person his wife had warned him about.

His own brother.
