Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden Inside the Backpack

Adrian stared at the document in his hands.

For the first time that evening, the calm expression he always carried disappeared.

Mia noticed immediately.

Children might not understand complicated situations, but they understood faces.

They understood when a smile disappeared.

They understood when a room suddenly felt heavier.

“Daddy?”” Mia asked quietly.

“Is something wrong?””

Adrian looked down at the paper again.

The document was slightly wrinkled from the water that had reached the bottom compartment of the backpack, but the important details were still visible.

At the top of the page were several official markings.

A legal seal.

A signature.

And one name that made his stomach tighten.

Vanessa Reed.

He had not expected that.

Not because Vanessa’s name appeared on the document.

Because he had never told her about it.

“Mia,” Adrian said gently, folding the paper closed.

“Where did you get this?””

The little girl looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t remember putting it in your backpack?””

She shook her head.

“No. It was already there.””

Adrian glanced toward the doorway.

Mrs. Parker was standing nearby, equally surprised.

“Was this in her bag when you packed it?”” Adrian asked.

The housekeeper frowned.

“No, sir. I helped Mia prepare her things last night. I only put in her notebooks, pencils, and lunch.””

Adrian looked back at the document.

Then toward the hallway.

Toward the room where Vanessa had been staying.

Something didn’t make sense.

“Daddy?””

Adrian immediately softened his expression.

“Sorry, sweetheart.””

“What is it?””

He hesitated.

Because Mia was six years old.

She didn’t need to carry adult problems.

“It’s just an important paper.””

“About me?””

The question caught him off guard.

Children always noticed more than adults expected.

“Yes,” Adrian admitted.

Mia hugged her new notebook.

“Did I do something wrong?””

The words hit him harder than anything Vanessa had said.

“No.””

He sat beside her.

“You did nothing wrong.””

“Then why was it hidden?””

Adrian looked at his daughter.

And in that moment, he made a decision.

He would find the truth.

But he would not let Mia feel afraid of it.

“Sometimes,” he said carefully, “adults hide things because they think they know what’s best.””

Mia tilted her head.

“Do they?””

Adrian smiled sadly.

“Not always.””

She looked at the document.

“Is Vanessa in trouble?””

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

Because the truth was complicated.

Vanessa had hurt Mia.

She had lied.

But there was something else happening beneath the surface.

Something bigger.

“I don’t know yet,” he said.

And that was the truth.

Later that night, Adrian sat alone in his office.

The mansion was silent.

The kind of silence that usually helped him think.

But tonight, every thought returned to one image.

Mia standing beside the pond.

Small.

Confused.

Trying to defend herself.

He opened the document again.

It was not a random paper.

It was a legal agreement connected to Mia’s future.

A trust document.

One created years ago after the death of Mia’s mother.

Adrian remembered every detail.

After losing his wife, he wanted to make sure Mia would always have security.

Not just money.

Protection.

A future.

The document confirmed that a portion of the Hawthorne family estate had been placed into a protected trust under Mia’s name.

But there was one unusual detail.

A condition.

A condition that only became active when Mia started school.

And beside that condition was a second signature.

Vanessa’s signature.

Adrian leaned back.

Why?

Why would Vanessa sign a document connected to Mia?

And why hide it inside her backpack?

A knock interrupted his thoughts.

“Come in.””

The door opened.

Vanessa stepped inside.

She looked different now.

The confidence from earlier was gone.

But Adrian knew better than to mistake fear for regret.

“Can we talk?”” she asked.

Adrian placed the document on the desk.

“We are talking.””

Her eyes moved toward it.

“You found that.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Adrian, I can explain.””

“I’m listening.””

She took a breath.

“I didn’t put it there to hurt Mia.””

“Then why was it there?””

Vanessa stayed silent.

That silence answered more than words.

Adrian stood.

“You knew about this document.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“A long time ago.””

“How?””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“Your lawyers contacted me.””

“My lawyers?””

“Yes.””

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

“For what reason?””

Vanessa walked toward the window.

“Because I was involved.””

“Involved how?””

She didn’t answer.

Adrian’s voice became firmer.

“Vanessa.””

She turned around.

“Because your wife asked me.””

The room froze.

Adrian stared at her.

“My wife?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Before she died.””

For several seconds, Adrian couldn’t speak.

His wife’s name was rarely mentioned in that house.

Not because he forgot her.

Because he remembered everything.

The way she laughed.

The way she held Mia.

The way she promised their daughter would grow up surrounded by love.

“You’re lying,” Adrian said quietly.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“You think I would invent something like that?””

“I think you’ve lied before.””

She looked hurt.

But Adrian noticed something.

She wasn’t angry.

She was nervous.

“Tell me everything,” he said.

Vanessa sat down.

“When your wife became sick, she knew she didn’t have much time.””

Adrian looked away.

He hated hearing those words.

“She worried about Mia,” Vanessa continued.

“About what?””

“About what would happen if you became too focused on protecting her.””

Adrian frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

Vanessa folded her hands.

“She knew you loved Mia. Everyone knew. But she also knew you would try to control every part of her life after losing your wife.””

Adrian said nothing.

Because somewhere deep down, he knew there was truth in that.

“I was asked to help manage certain things,” Vanessa said.

“What things?””

“Her education. Her trust. Some family arrangements.””

Adrian looked at the document.

“And you hid this?””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I panicked.””

“That’s your explanation?””

“No.””

She looked up.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then said:

“That when Mia became old enough, she would find out the truth.””

Adrian felt a chill.

“What truth?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The silence stretched.

Then Adrian stepped closer.

“What are you not telling me?””

Vanessa looked toward the document.

“That paper is only the beginning.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Beginning of what?””

Before Vanessa could reply, Adrian’s phone rang.

The number on the screen was unfamiliar.

He almost ignored it.

But something made him answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Mr. Hawthorne?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Claire Bennett. I’m calling from the legal office that handled your late wife’s estate.””

Adrian straightened.

“How did you get this number?””

“We were instructed to contact you if the trust document was ever discovered.””

His hand tightened around the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

A pause.

Then the woman said:

“Mr. Hawthorne, the document you found today was not supposed to be hidden forever.””

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

She was watching him.

Fear was written across her face.

The woman continued.

“There is a second file connected to Mia’s trust.””

“Where?””

“It was sealed.””

“By who?””

Another pause.

Then came the answer that changed everything.

“By your wife.””

Adrian stopped breathing for a moment.

“Why would she seal it?””

The woman’s voice lowered.

“Because she believed someone inside your family would eventually try to take what belonged to Mia.””

Adrian looked around the room.

At Vanessa.

At the document.

At the life he thought he understood.

Then the woman added one final sentence.

“And Mr. Hawthorne… the person your wife was worried about was not a stranger.””

The call ended.

Leaving Adrian with one terrifying question.

Who had his wife been trying to protect Mia from?
