Thinking

Chapter 7: The Person Hidden Behind the Lies

Adrian stared at the document lying on the stone edge of the fountain.

The paper moved slightly in the night breeze.

But he couldn’t move.

Not because he was afraid of what he would find.

Because a part of him already knew.

The signature at the bottom belonged to his wife.

The handwriting was hers.

The ink was old.

The date was real.

But the name written beside it was the one that made his heart sink.

Mrs. Parker.

The woman who had cared for Mia since she was a baby.

The woman who had prepared her meals, helped her with homework, and sat beside her whenever nightmares woke her up.

The woman Adrian trusted more than almost anyone.

“No,” Adrian whispered.

Ethan watched him carefully.

“I know what you’re thinking.””

Adrian looked up.

“You expect me to believe Mrs. Parker was involved?””

“I expect you to read the whole document.””

Adrian picked it up.

His eyes moved across the page.

The first paragraph explained something he had never known.

Years ago, before Mia was born, his wife had created a private support agreement with people she trusted.

Not a financial agreement.

A protection agreement.

She wanted certain people around Mia to have legal authority to act if something happened to her and Adrian became unable to protect their daughter.

Adrian’s eyes stopped.

Unable to protect.

The phrase bothered him.

He continued reading.

Mrs. Parker had been named as one of those people.

But not because she wanted control.

Because she was supposed to be Mia’s safeguard.

Adrian looked at Ethan.

“This doesn’t make sense.””

Ethan nodded.

“That’s because you only saw one part.””

“What part am I missing?””

“The part where someone changed the agreement.””

Adrian looked back at the document.

“What?””

Ethan pointed.

“Look at the signature section.””

Adrian studied it.

The original agreement had three names.

His wife.

Mrs. Parker.

And a legal witness.

But another page had been attached later.

A page changing the conditions.

A page giving someone else access.

Someone who was not supposed to have it.

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“Who added this?””

Ethan looked at him.

“You already know.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Adrian’s voice became sharper.

“Say it.””

Ethan took a breath.

“Your father’s old attorney.””

Adrian froze.

His father’s attorney.

A man who had handled Hawthorne family matters for decades.

A man who had died two years earlier.

“How?””

Ethan looked toward the house.

“Because he wasn’t working alone.””

Adrian’s mind raced.

A lawyer.

A changed document.

A hidden trust.

A person inside the family.

Everything was connected.

But one question remained.

Why was Mrs. Parker’s name there?

“Then why did my wife write that Mrs. Parker was important?””

Ethan looked down.

“Because she was.””

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Mrs. Parker was trying to stop this.””

The answer surprised him.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Ethan hesitated.

“Because she found the altered documents before your wife died.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“And she never told me?””

“She tried.””

“When?””

Ethan looked away.

“After the funeral.””

Adrian remembered.

The months after his wife’s death were a blur.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Business problems.

A grieving baby.

A house full of people telling him what he needed to do.

He remembered Mrs. Parker trying to talk to him.

But he remembered pushing everyone away.

“What did she say?””

Ethan’s voice softened.

“She told you someone was trying to interfere with Mia’s future.””

Adrian went silent.

He remembered now.

A conversation in the kitchen.

Mrs. Parker standing there with worried eyes.

And him telling her:

Not now.

He had been angry.

Broken.

Exhausted.

He thought everyone was trying to control his life.

So he ignored her.

“I didn’t listen,” Adrian whispered.

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because they both knew.

That mistake mattered.

Back inside the mansion, Mrs. Parker stood in the doorway of Mia’s room.

The little girl was asleep.

Her new notebook rested beside her.

On the first page, she had written one sentence.

“My first day of school.””

Mrs. Parker smiled sadly.

Then she heard footsteps.

Adrian entered.

The expression on his face made her nervous.

“Sir?””

Adrian closed the door behind him.

“How long have you known?””

Mrs. Parker became still.

She knew immediately.

The question was not about the backpack.

It was about everything.

“I was hoping you would never have to find out this way.””

Adrian looked at her.

“So you did know.””

“Yes.””

“About the trust.””

“Yes.””

“About the documents being changed.””

Mrs. Parker lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

The admission hurt.

More than he expected.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“I did.””

Adrian looked away.

“You tried.””

“Yes.””

“And I didn’t listen.””

Mrs. Parker nodded.

“No.””

The answer was gentle.

Not accusing.

That made it worse.

“I thought you hated me for that,” Adrian said.

Mrs. Parker looked surprised.

“Hate you?””

“Yes.””

She shook her head.

“Mr. Hawthorne, I watched you hold Mia every night after her mother passed away.””

Her voice softened.

“I watched you learn how to braid her hair because nobody else taught you.””

A small smile appeared.

“I watched you burn pancakes every Sunday because you insisted she needed homemade breakfast.””

Adrian looked down.

“I never hated you.””

“Then why hide the truth?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would react exactly the way you are reacting now.””

Adrian frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“You would go after everyone.””

She looked toward Mia.

“And Mia would see her family destroying itself.””

Those words stopped him.

Because that was exactly what was happening.

Mia had already seen too much.

“Who changed the documents?”” Adrian asked.

Mrs. Parker was quiet.

Then she answered.

“I don’t know.””

Adrian studied her.

“But you suspect someone.””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Mrs. Parker looked toward the hallway.

Toward the living room.

Toward Vanessa.

“Someone who knew your wife’s wishes.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Vanessa.””

Mrs. Parker didn’t confirm it.

She didn’t need to.

“She was close to your wife before she passed.””

Adrian frowned.

“Vanessa said my wife asked her to help.””

Mrs. Parker looked surprised.

“Did she?””

“Yes.””

A painful silence followed.

Then Mrs. Parker whispered:

“Your wife trusted many people.””

Adrian waited.

“But she trusted them for different reasons.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means Vanessa was trusted with information.””

“And?””

“She was never trusted with Mia.””

The sentence landed heavily.

Adrian looked at her.

“You’re sure?””

Mrs. Parker nodded.

“Your wife wrote it herself.””

“Where?””

Mrs. Parker walked to a small wooden box in her room.

She opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Another one.

Adrian stared.

“You kept this all this time?””

“I was waiting.””

“For what?””

“For you to believe Mia before you believed everyone else.””

Adrian felt ashamed.

Because yesterday, Mia had needed exactly that.

He opened the letter.

His wife’s words appeared again.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, please understand that the person closest to the information is not always the person closest to the heart.

Some people will use love as a key to open doors they were never meant to enter.

Adrian’s eyes moved lower.

Then he stopped.

Because the next sentence revealed something he never knew.

Vanessa was not the first person who tried to access Mia’s trust.

His breathing slowed.

There was more.

Much more.

Then the final line appeared.

The first person was someone I invited into our home because I thought they were family.

Adrian lowered the letter.

“Who?””

Mrs. Parker looked at him.

And before she could answer, every light in the mansion suddenly went out.

The house fell into darkness.

A second later, Adrian’s phone received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

Stop searching, or Mia will lose everything.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

A photo.

A photo taken moments earlier.

Of Mia sleeping in her room.

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

Someone was inside the mansion.

May you like

Someone had been watching his daughter.

And they were much closer than he thought.
