Chapter 6: The Box Beneath the Fountain

Nobody spoke.

The video continued playing on the tablet screen, but the room felt frozen.

The man walking through the garden under the cover of darkness was unmistakable.

Ethan Hawthorne.

Adrian’s brother.

The person who had spent years calling Mia his “little star.””

The person who had stood beside Adrian during the hardest moments of his life.

The person who now stood in his living room pretending he was there to help.

Adrian watched the footage again.

11:43 PM.

Ethan entered the garden.

He wasn’t wandering.

He wasn’t lost.

He moved with purpose.

Straight toward the old fountain.

The same fountain that had stood on the Hawthorne property for decades.

The same fountain Adrian’s wife used to sit beside while watching Mia play.

“Stop the video.””

The security officer paused.

Adrian looked at Ethan.

“Explain.””

Ethan remained silent.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

Vanessa looked between them.

“You knew?””

The question was directed at Ethan.

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“What were you looking for?””

Ethan crossed his arms.

“I don’t think you understand what you’re seeing.””

“Then help me understand.””

“It’s not what you think.””

Adrian gave a humorless smile.

“That’s what everyone says when they’re caught.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“You’re acting like I broke into your house.””

“You entered my garden at midnight.””

“It’s my family’s property too.””

The sentence made Adrian’s eyes narrow.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The reason.””

Ethan looked confused.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You don’t see this as my home.””

A pause.

“You see it as something you lost.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You always had everything.””

Adrian shook his head.

“This is not about money.””

“Of course you’d say that.””

“No,” Adrian replied.

“Because if it was about money, you would have admitted it already.””

The room became silent again.

Mia stood near Mrs. Parker, watching the adults argue.

She didn’t understand trusts or estates.

She didn’t understand family businesses.

But she understood one thing.

People were fighting over something connected to her.

And she hated that feeling.

“Daddy?””

Adrian immediately turned.

His expression softened.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Can we talk somewhere else?””

The simple question broke through the tension.

Adrian looked at his daughter.

And realized something.

He had been so focused on uncovering the truth that he had forgotten Mia was still standing there.

He walked toward her.

“You’re right.””

He took her hand.

“Let’s go upstairs.””

But before they left, Ethan spoke.

“Adrian.””

He stopped.

“Whatever you think you found, you’re wrong.””

Adrian looked back.

“Then why are you afraid?””

Ethan had no answer.

Upstairs, Adrian sat beside Mia on her bed.

The little girl held her notebook against her chest.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Mia asked:

“Is Uncle Ethan bad?””

Adrian looked at her.

That was the hardest question.

Because children wanted simple answers.

Good people.

Bad people.

Heroes.

Villains.

But adults were rarely that easy.

“I think Uncle Ethan made choices that hurt people,” Adrian said.

“Does that mean he doesn’t love me?””

Adrian paused.

Then answered honestly.

“I don’t know.””

Mia looked down.

“That’s sad.””

“Yes.””

“Because I loved him.””

Adrian reached for her hand.

“I know.””

She was quiet.

Then she asked:

“Why do people hurt people they love?””

Adrian looked away.

Because he had spent years asking himself the same question.

“I don’t know, Mia.””

And for once, he admitted something adults rarely admitted.

“I don’t know.””

Downstairs, Ethan stood near the fireplace while Vanessa confronted him.

“You went into the garden?””

He didn’t look at her.

“Yes.””

“You told me you didn’t know where the document was.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then what were you searching for?””

Ethan remained silent.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Ethan.””

He finally turned.

“Something your friend Adrian was never supposed to find.””

Vanessa stared.

“You’re making this worse.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I’m finishing what should have happened years ago.””

Vanessa looked disturbed.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

A bitter smile appeared on Ethan’s face.

“I understand perfectly.””

“No, you don’t.””

She stepped closer.

“This isn’t about taking control.””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“It’s about Mia.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Don’t pretend you care about her.””

That sentence hit.

Because it was true.

Not completely.

But enough.

Vanessa looked away.

“You think I don’t regret what happened?””

“You threw her backpack into a pond.””

Her face tightened.

“I know.””

“You hurt a child because you were scared.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Ethan continued.

“And now you want to act like you’re different?””

“I made a mistake.””

“So did I.””

The admission surprised her.

For the first time, Ethan sounded less like a businessman.

More like someone carrying years of resentment.

“Why?”” Vanessa asked.

He looked at the family portrait hanging on the wall.

A picture of Adrian, his wife, and baby Mia.

“Because everyone always saw Adrian as the one who saved this family.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means nobody saw what I gave up.””

The answer was quiet.

Almost sad.

But it didn’t erase what he had done.

Meanwhile, Adrian returned downstairs after making sure Mia was asleep.

He walked directly to the garden.

The fountain stood under the evening sky.

The security officer waited nearby.

“You said Ethan was searching for something.””

“Yes, sir.””

“Show me.””

The officer opened another recording.

The footage showed Ethan removing a small stone panel beneath the fountain.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Adrian stared.

His wife had known about this place.

He remembered.

Years ago, she joked that the fountain was the only part of the mansion where she could hide something from him.

He thought she was teasing.

She wasn’t.

The officer handed him a small box.

It was old.

Wooden.

Simple.

No lock.

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A key.

And another envelope.

His hands trembled as he picked up the photograph.

It showed his wife.

Standing beside someone he recognized.

Someone unexpected.

The person in the picture was much younger.

But there was no mistake.

It was Ethan.

Adrian turned the photograph over.

A date was written on the back.

Three years before Mia was born.

Then he opened the envelope.

The first line immediately made his heart stop.

Adrian, if you found this, then Ethan already knows about Mia’s inheritance.

Adrian’s breathing changed.

He continued reading.

I need you to understand something.

Ethan is not the person I fear because he wants money.

Money is only the surface.

Adrian looked toward the mansion.

Toward where his brother was waiting.

The letter continued.

The real danger is that Ethan believes he is protecting Mia from you.

Adrian froze.

The next sentence was worse.

He believes you are the reason she will never be free.

A sound came from behind him.

Footsteps.

Adrian turned.

Ethan stood at the edge of the garden.

His face was no longer angry.

It was tired.

“You found it.””

Adrian held up the letter.

“You knew this was here.””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

Ethan looked at the fountain.

“Since before Mia was born.””

Adrian stared.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Ethan looked at him.

“The truth is your wife knew you would never listen to me.””

“About what?””

Ethan took a slow breath.

“About the one thing she was afraid you would do.””

Adrian waited.

Ethan’s voice lowered.

“She was afraid that after losing her…”

He looked toward the house.

“…you would turn Mia into someone who only knew how to survive.””

Adrian felt the words hit harder than any accusation.

Because somewhere inside, he feared the same thing.

But before he could respond, Ethan reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a second document.

“I didn’t come here to steal Mia’s future.””

Adrian stared.

“Then why?””

Ethan placed the paper on the fountain.

“Because I found out something worse.””

Adrian looked down.

The document had a familiar signature.

His wife’s.

And beneath it was a name Adrian never expected.

The person who had been manipulating everything from the beginning.

Was not Ethan.

May you like

Was not Vanessa.

It was someone who had been part of Mia’s life since the day she was born.
