Chapter 9: The Letter
I didn’t tell Nia what Vanessa said.
Not immediately.
Some truths belong to adults until you know they won’t destroy a child.
But I couldn’t sleep.
Because Vanessa had opened a door I had kept closed for years.
Nia’s mother, Emily, had been gone for eight years.
An accident.
That was the explanation everyone knew.
That was the explanation I had accepted.
But there was something else.
Something I had never shared.
Three days before Emily died, she wrote me a letter.
I never opened it.
Not because I didn’t want to.
Because I was afraid.
The envelope sat inside my desk drawer for eight years.
A final message from the woman I loved.
A message I wasn’t ready to read.
The next morning, I took it out.
The paper had aged.
The handwriting was still hers.
My hands shook as I opened it.
The first line destroyed me.
*Ethan, if you are reading this, something has happened and I need you to protect Nia.*
I stopped breathing.
I kept reading.
*I know you will want answers. I know you will blame yourself. Please don’t.*
Tears blurred the page.
Then I reached the sentence that changed everything.
*There is someone who will try to tell you that protecting Nia means letting others make decisions for her. Don’t listen.*
My heart started racing.
How could Emily have known?
I continued.
*Nia is stronger than people realize. She notices things. She feels things. Never let anyone convince her that she is the problem.*
I closed my eyes.
Because that was exactly what Vanessa had done.
The letter continued.
*I found out something about someone close to us. Someone I trusted. Someone who wants what we have.*
I froze.
Someone close to us?
I turned the page.
But the next part was missing.
The bottom half had been torn away.
Someone had removed it.
I searched the envelope.
Nothing.
Only one small piece remained.
Three words.
*Ask Margaret first.*
My heart pounded.
Margaret.
Nia’s grandmother.
I grabbed my phone.
Before I could call her, a message came in.
From Rachel, my attorney.
*Ethan, I found something concerning.*
I called immediately.
She answered.
“Did you find something?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
A pause.
“Vanessa filed paperwork yesterday.””
My blood ran cold.
“What paperwork?””
“Temporary guardianship documents.””
I stood up.
“She can’t do that.””
“She’s trying.””
“On what grounds?””
Rachel’s voice became serious.
“She claims you are emotionally unstable after the failed wedding and that Nia is currently in an unsafe environment.””
I couldn’t speak.
“She’s trying to take my daughter?””
“Yes.””
My hand tightened around Emily’s letter.
Then Rachel said:
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
“The documents include a witness statement.””
“From who?””
Silence.
Then:
“Your former mother-in-law.””
I felt the room spin.
“Margaret?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the torn letter.
The words burned into my mind.
*Ask Margaret first.*
And suddenly I realized something.
The person who might hold the answer to everything…
Was the same person Vanessa was now using against me.
I grabbed my keys.
May you like
Because before I fought Vanessa in court…
I needed to know what Margaret had been hiding.
