Chapter 12: The Person Behind Everything
The name on the document stayed in my mind all night.
I couldn’t make sense of it.
Because it belonged to someone who wasn’t supposed to be part of this.
Someone who had nothing to gain.
Someone I trusted.
Rachel took the document back to her office.
The police continued searching for Nia.
Every minute felt like an hour.
Then, at 3:17 in the morning, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered immediately.
“Nia?””
A child’s voice whispered.
“Dad?””
I almost collapsed.
“Nia!””
“Dad, I’m scared.””
“Where are you?””
“I don’t know.””
“Look around.””
She was crying quietly.
“There’s a window.””
“Anything outside?””
“Trees.””
“Anything else?””
A pause.
Then:
“There’s a red mailbox.””
I grabbed a pen.
“Nia, listen to me. Stay calm.””
“Dad?””
“I’m coming.””
“But Vanessa said—”
I froze.
“What did Vanessa say?””
“She said you were going to send me away.””
My heart broke.
“She told you that?””
“She said you’d be happier without me.””
I closed my eyes.
The cruelty was unbelievable.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Listen to me. You are my whole world.””
Silence.
Then:
“I know.””
Those two words almost destroyed me.
Because she knew.
She trusted me.
The call suddenly ended.
I looked at the screen.
No location.
Nothing.
Then Rachel rushed into the room.
“Ethan.””
I turned.
“We found something.””
“What?””
She held up the fake guardianship document.
“We traced where this was created.””
“And?””
Her face was pale.
“It came from Margaret’s computer.””
I froze.
“No.””
“She’s the one who printed it.””
My mind refused to accept it.
“Margaret wouldn’t do this.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She was manipulated.””
“Maybe.””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“But the evidence says she helped.””
I thought about the journal.
The warning.
The person closest to us.
The person who wasn’t who they claimed to be.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Margaret.
I opened it.
*Ethan, please believe me. I can explain.*
Then another.
*I know where Nia is.*
My heart stopped.
I called immediately.
She answered.
Crying.
“Ethan.””
“Where is my daughter?””
“I didn’t take her.””
“Then why do you know where she is?””
“Because Vanessa told me.””
I went silent.
“What?””
“She called me after she took Nia.””
My hands tightened.
“You knew?””
“I tried to stop her.””
“Where is she?””
Margaret hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The old lake house.””
I remembered.
Emily’s family property.
A place abandoned for years.
“Why there?””
“Because Vanessa thinks it belongs to Nia.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Margaret’s voice shook.
“Ethan, there’s something Emily left behind.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
“A letter.””
“Another one?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“At the lake house.””
I stood.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Vanessa threatened me.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“But my daughter keeps paying the price.””
Margaret started crying.
“I know.””
I grabbed my jacket.
“Stay on the phone.””
“Ethan—”
“If you want me to believe you, help me bring my daughter home.””
The drive to the lake house felt endless.
The old road was barely maintained.
Trees covered both sides.
No lights.
No houses.
Nothing.
Then I saw it.
A single light inside the cabin.
I got out.
Rachel and the police followed.
The door was unlocked.
Inside, I heard crying.
“Nia!””
“Dad!””
I ran.
She was sitting on the floor.
Safe.
Alive.
I dropped beside her and pulled her into my arms.
“I’m here.””
She held me tightly.
“I knew you’d come.””
Behind us, footsteps echoed.
I turned.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
Her face was calm.
Almost peaceful.
“You found her.””
I stood up.
“You kidnapped my daughter.””
“I protected her.””
The police moved forward.
Vanessa smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
I stared at her.
“Understand what?””
She looked at Nia.
Then at me.
“Your daughter was never the reason I lost.””
A chill ran through me.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“She’s the reason I couldn’t win.””
“Win what?””
Her smile faded.
“The thing Emily hid from you.””
My blood froze.
She knew.
She knew about Emily.
May you like
And then she said the one sentence I never expected.
“The truth is, Ethan… your wife didn’t die by accident.””
