Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Veil

Nobody spoke.

The music continued playing in the background, but it sounded distant.

Like the entire world had stepped away and left only the three of us standing there.

Me.

My daughter.

And the woman I was supposed to marry.

Nia buried her face against my chest.

Her small hands gripped my suit jacket.

The same jacket she had helped me choose two weeks earlier.

“You look like a movie star, Dad,” she had joked.

Now she was shaking.

I looked down at her.

“Are you hurt?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Then she whispered:

“She said you didn’t want me here.””

That sentence hurt more than anything Vanessa had done.

I looked at my bride.

Vanessa’s face changed.

The confidence was gone.

“Ethan, wait,” she said.

I slowly turned toward her.

“Wait for what?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Claire stepped forward.

“Maybe everyone should calm down.””

I looked at her.

“Your sister just tried to remove my twelve-year-old daughter from my wedding.””

Claire looked uncomfortable.

“She probably misunderstood the situation.””

“Misunderstood?””

I pointed toward Nia.

“My daughter was standing outside crying while a security guard grabbed her.””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“I didn’t mean for him to grab her like that.””

I stared at her.

“Then what did you mean?””

She looked around at the guests.

“I was trying to protect the wedding.””

The words made me laugh.

Not because they were funny.

Because they were unbelievable.

“Protect it from what?””

Vanessa looked at Nia.

And that was the answer.

I saw it.

Everyone saw it.

“You were protecting your wedding from my daughter?””

“No,” Vanessa said quickly.

But her voice was too fast.

Too defensive.

“Nia was causing a scene.””

My daughter stepped away from me.

“I wasn’t.””

Vanessa sighed.

“Nia, you don’t understand.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t talk to her like that.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I’m your future wife.””

“And she’s my daughter.””

The courtyard went quiet again.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re choosing her over me?””

I couldn’t believe the question.

“This isn’t choosing.””

I pointed at Nia.

“This is being a father.””

For a moment, I thought Vanessa might apologize.

I waited.

I wanted her to say she was wrong.

I wanted her to look at Nia and admit she had gone too far.

Instead, she whispered:

“You’re making this bigger than it is.””

Those words broke something in me.

Because she still didn’t understand.

This wasn’t about a dress.

It wasn’t about a wedding.

It was about my daughter feeling unwanted by someone who was supposed to become family.

I took Nia’s hand.

“Come with me.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Ethan, where are you going?””

I looked at her.

“I need to get my daughter somewhere safe.””

Her face went pale.

“Safe? From me?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t need to.

The truth was standing right in front of us.

I took Nia inside the private room where the wedding party had been getting ready.

She sat on the couch while I knelt in front of her.

“Look at me.””

She slowly looked up.

“Did I do something wrong?””

My heart shattered.

“No.””

“But she said…”

“I don’t care what she said.””

I held her hands.

“You belong everywhere I am.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Then why did she hate me?””

I had no answer.

Not one that would make sense to a child.

A knock came at the door.

I stood up.

Marcus entered.

His face was serious.

“Ethan.””

“What?””

He looked toward Nia, then lowered his voice.

“You need to see something.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He handed me his phone.

On the screen was a message.

A message sent from Vanessa earlier that morning.

My eyes moved across the words.

And the more I read, the colder I felt.

Because this wasn’t the first time Vanessa had tried to remove my daughter from my life.

And there was one sentence at the bottom that made my hands start shaking.

“Once we’re married, he won’t have a choice.””
