Chapter 13: The Truth Emily Left Behind
The room went silent.
Not the kind of silence that comes from peace.
The kind that comes before something breaks.
I stared at Vanessa.
For eight years, I had lived with one painful truth.
Emily was gone.
An accident had taken her from us.
I had buried my wife.
I had raised our daughter alone.
I had learned how to survive without the person who knew me better than anyone.
And now Vanessa was standing in front of me, telling me everything I believed was wrong.
“You’re lying.””
My voice barely sounded like mine.
Vanessa tilted her head.
“Am I?””
The police officer stepped forward.
“Ma’am, you need to stop talking and step away.””
But Vanessa didn’t look at him.
She looked at me.
Like this was a conversation she had been waiting years to have.
“You never wondered why Emily was so afraid at the end?””
My jaw tightened.
“I know why.””
“Do you?””
Her smile was small.
“Because she found something.””
I felt Nia’s hand tighten around mine.
I immediately moved behind me, shielding her.
Vanessa noticed.
Of course she noticed.
Everything was a calculation with her.
“You still do that,” she whispered.
“Do what?””
“Protect her.””
I stared at her.
“She’s my daughter.””
“And that’s exactly why Emily trusted you.””
I froze.
The mention of Emily coming from Vanessa’s mouth felt wrong.
“You didn’t know Emily.””
“No.””
Vanessa looked around the old cabin.
“But I knew what she left behind.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa glanced at her.
“The trust.””
Everyone became still.
My heart sank.
The trust.
My father’s trust.
The one Vanessa had been searching for.
“You knew about it.””
“Of course.””
I shook my head.
“How?””
She smiled.
“Because Emily wrote about it.””
My blood ran cold.
“She wrote about the trust?””
“She wrote about everything.””
I looked at the police.
“Get her out.””
But Vanessa continued.
“She knew someone would come after it.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“She knew someone would try to use Nia.””
The words didn’t match the woman standing in front of me.
The woman who had tried to remove Nia from my wedding.
The woman who had manipulated everyone.
“You expect me to believe you were protecting my daughter?””
“No.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“I expect you to understand that I wasn’t the first person who wanted something from your family.””
The room felt colder.
“What does that mean?””
She looked toward the corner of the cabin.
“There’s a box under the floorboard.””
Everyone turned.
The police searched immediately.
A few minutes later, they found it.
Inside was an old envelope.
My name was written across the front.
My hands shook when I saw the handwriting.
Emily.
I took it.
The room disappeared.
For a moment, I wasn’t in that cabin.
I was back eight years ago.
My wife laughing in the kitchen.
Her hand in mine.
Her voice telling me everything would be okay.
I opened the letter.
*Ethan,*
*If you’re reading this, then I was right to be afraid.*
I swallowed.
*I need you to know something. The accident was not random.*
My breathing stopped.
Nia looked up at me.
I forced myself to continue.
*Someone close to us has been hiding things. I don’t know who I can trust anymore.*
I looked at Margaret.
Then Vanessa.
Then the room.
*I found evidence that someone has been trying to access information about Nia’s inheritance.*
My hand tightened around the paper.
*They know about the trust. They know Nia is the future beneficiary.*
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face had changed.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
*But the most dangerous thing is not the money.*
I kept reading.
*The most dangerous thing is someone convincing Ethan that he cannot protect his own daughter.*
My eyes burned.
Because that was exactly what Vanessa had done.
*If someone tries to separate you from Nia, do not believe them. They are not protecting her. They are protecting themselves.*
I lowered the letter.
Nobody spoke.
Then Rachel whispered:
“Ethan…”
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She didn’t answer.
“You knew Emily suspected this.””
A tear appeared in Vanessa’s eye.
Not a fake one.
A real one.
And somehow that made everything worse.
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
“You knew my wife was afraid.””
“Yes.””
“And you still came into my life?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I didn’t know at first.””
“Don’t.””
My voice hardened.
“Don’t pretend.””
She looked at me.
“I found out after we started dating.””
The betrayal was almost physical.
“You found out and stayed?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked toward Nia.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
I stared.
“Fix what?””
“The situation.””
She laughed bitterly.
“I thought if I became important enough, if I became your wife, I could control what happened next.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not love.
Not family.
Control.
“You used me.””
“Yes.””
Her honesty was worse than a lie.
“But I didn’t know everything.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“Who did?””
Vanessa looked toward Margaret.
Everyone followed her gaze.
Margaret went pale.
“No.””
Vanessa whispered:
“It wasn’t me who first looked for the trust.””
My stomach dropped.
“Then who?””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Vanessa said a name.
A name that made my entire world collapse.
“Margaret.””
Nia gasped.
“No…”
I looked at my former mother-in-law.
The woman who held Nia after Emily died.
The woman who baked her birthday cakes.
The woman who had just handed me Emily’s journal.
Margaret started crying.
“I never wanted this.””
My voice was quiet.
“What did you do?””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t hurt Emily.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
She covered her face.
“I only wanted to protect Nia.””
“By taking her away from me?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“By making sure she had someone if you failed.””
I stared at her.
The truth was finally coming out.
But somehow, it hurt more.
Because every person I trusted had been keeping something from me.
The police moved toward Margaret.
But before they reached her, her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
“What?””
I watched her answer.
Then I heard a voice through the speaker.
A man’s voice.
A voice I had never heard before.
“Margaret, you have exactly one chance to fix this.””
Everyone froze.
The man continued.
“Or I release everything Emily discovered.””
The call ended.
Margaret dropped the phone.
And I realized something.
May you like
Vanessa wasn’t the person behind everything.
She was only one piece.
