Thinking

Chapter 8: The Battle Begins

I spent the next forty-eight hours rebuilding my life.

Not emotionally.

Not yet.

There would be time for anger.

Time for grief.

Time to understand how I missed every warning sign.

But first, I needed to protect Nia.

I hired an attorney.

Her name was Rachel Miller.

The moment I finished explaining everything, she leaned back in her chair.

“Ethan, I need you to understand something.””

I nodded.

“What?””

“People like Vanessa rarely make one mistake.””

I looked at the documents spread across her desk.

“I know.””

“She creates patterns.””

Rachel picked up the messages.

“This is not about a wedding.””

“No.””

“It’s about access.””

I nodded.

“She wanted my daughter gone.””

Rachel looked at me.

“She wanted control.””

That word stayed with me.

Control.

Everything suddenly connected.

The criticism.

The pressure.

The way she questioned my decisions.

The way she tried to make me doubt myself.

She wasn’t just pushing Nia away.

She was weakening me.

“Can she still do anything legally?”” I asked.

Rachel shook her head.

“Not without marriage or legal authority.””

“Good.””

“But…”

I hated that word.

“But what?””

“She may try something else.””

“What?””

Rachel looked at the messages.

“She knows she lost access. People like that often change tactics when direct control fails.””

I nodded.

“Then what do we do?””

“We document everything.””

So I did.

Every message.

Every call.

Every interaction.

I saved everything.

Because I had learned something.

Kindness without boundaries could become a weapon someone else used against you.

That evening, I picked Nia up from school.

She ran toward me like she always did.

But this time, she stopped halfway.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you and Vanessa really done?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked at the ground.

“Because of me?””

I immediately knelt down.

“No.””

“But if I wasn’t here…”

I stopped her.

“Nia.””

She looked up.

“Never say that.””

Her eyes watered.

“My life is better because you’re here.””

She hugged me.

And for the first time since the wedding, I felt like I could breathe.

But peace didn’t last.

That night, someone knocked on the door.

I opened it.

Vanessa stood there.

Alone.

I immediately stepped outside and closed the door behind me.

“What are you doing here?””

She looked exhausted.

“I need to explain.””

“No.””

“Ethan, please.””

I shook my head.

“You had your chance.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I made mistakes.””

“You hurt my daughter.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

She looked down.

For a moment, I almost saw the woman I thought I knew.

Almost.

Then she spoke.

“I was scared.””

I stared at her.

“Scared of what?””

“Losing you.””

I laughed quietly.

“So you tried to remove the person who means the most to me?””

“No.””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“I thought if Nia became less dependent on you, things would be easier.””

There it was.

Not an apology.

A justification.

“She’s a child, Vanessa.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

She wiped her eyes.

“You don’t understand what it’s like.””

“What?””

“To always feel like you come second.””

I stared at her.

“You felt jealous of a twelve-year-old?””

She didn’t answer.

And that was answer enough.

I stepped back.

“You need to leave.””

Her expression hardened slightly.

“You’re really choosing this?””

I looked at her.

“I’m choosing my daughter.””

She whispered:

“You have no idea what you’re giving up.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I know exactly what I’m saving.””

She walked away.

But before she reached her car, she stopped.

“I hope you enjoy the truth when it comes out.””

I frowned.

“What truth?””

She turned around.

“The truth about why Nia’s mother really left.””

My heart stopped.

Vanessa smiled sadly.

Then she drove away.

I stood there frozen.

Because there was one thing Vanessa knew better than anyone.

There was one wound I had never healed.

Nia’s mother.

The woman who died years ago.

May you like

The woman Vanessa had never met.

So how did she know there was something I didn’t?
