Thinking

Chapter 7: The Hidden Reason

I stared at Daniel’s message until the words blurred.

*Vanessa wasn’t planning to marry you for love. She was planning to take control of something you never told anyone about.*

My first reaction was anger.

My second was confusion.

Because I had spent the last twenty-four hours discovering things about Vanessa I never thought possible.

But this felt different.

Control of what?

I typed back immediately.

*What are you talking about?*

The three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

For almost a full minute, there was no answer.

Finally, my phone buzzed.

*Not over text. Meet me tomorrow. Bring nothing except your questions.*

I frowned.

That sounded dramatic.

Almost like something from a movie.

But after everything I had learned, I couldn’t ignore it.

I looked toward the living room.

Nia was sitting on the couch watching television, but I could tell she wasn’t really watching.

She kept glancing at me.

Kids always know when something is wrong.

I walked over and sat beside her.

“Hey.””

She muted the TV.

“Are you still mad?””

The question surprised me.

“Mad?””

“At Vanessa.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She looked down.

“Are you mad at me?””

That question hurt even more.

I turned toward her.

“Why would I be mad at you?””

“Because I didn’t tell you about Ava.””

I placed my hand over hers.

“Nia, listen to me.””

She looked up.

“There is nothing you could ever tell me that would make me love you less.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Even if it’s something bad?””

“Especially then.””

She nodded slowly.

I wanted to ask more questions.

I wanted to know every conversation she had with Vanessa.

Every moment Vanessa made her uncomfortable.

Every warning sign I missed.

But I stopped myself.

Because right now, Nia didn’t need an investigation.

She needed her father.

The next morning, I met Daniel at a small coffee shop twenty minutes from my house.

I recognized him immediately.

Not because I had seen pictures.

Because he looked like someone carrying years of regret.

He stood when I approached.

“Ethan?””

I nodded.

“Daniel.””

We shook hands.

Neither of us smiled.

There was nothing friendly about the situation.

We sat down.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel placed a folder on the table.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

I looked at the folder.

“What is that?””

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

He opened it.

Inside were printed emails, documents, and screenshots.

My stomach tightened.

“Where did you get these?””

“From my old lawyer.””

I looked at him.

“Why would your lawyer have information about Vanessa?””

“Because after Lily left my house, I tried to fight it.””

My jaw tightened.

“You lost?””

Daniel looked away.

“Yes.””

“How?””

He tapped the papers.

“Because Vanessa knew how to make herself look like the victim.””

He slid one document toward me.

It was a report.

I read the first few lines.

My face changed.

“She claimed you were unstable?””

Daniel nodded.

“She told the court I was emotionally dependent on Lily. That I was making decisions based on guilt.””

My blood ran cold.

Those words.

Those exact ideas.

She had used them before.

With me.

“She convinced people you were the problem.””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“She’s good at that.””

I flipped through more pages.

Then I stopped.

There was a document with Vanessa’s name.

A legal agreement.

“What is this?””

Daniel hesitated.

“That’s the reason I contacted you.””

I looked at him.

“Explain.””

“She has done this before.””

“Done what?””

“Become close to someone with a child. Gain their trust. Then slowly convince them that the child is the problem.””

I felt sick.

“But why?””

Daniel pointed to the agreement.

“Because Vanessa believes children make people weak.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn’t explain what she wanted from me.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“It does.””

He tapped the document.

“Look at the date.””

I checked.

My eyes narrowed.

The date was three weeks before Vanessa and I met.

“What am I looking at?””

“She had already started researching families.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“She was looking for someone with assets.””

The words landed heavily.

I looked back at the papers.

There were notes.

Public records.

Property information.

My home.

My investments.

My company.

Everything.

My hands went cold.

“She researched me?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before your first date.””

I sat back.

The coffee shop suddenly felt too small.

I remembered our first meeting.

How she seemed interested in everything about me.

How she asked about my dreams.

My goals.

My future.

I thought she cared.

Maybe she was collecting information.

“Why would she want my money?””

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s not the whole story.””

“What else?””

He looked directly at me.

“Your daughter.””

I froze.

“What about Nia?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“She wasn’t just trying to remove Nia because she disliked children.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then why?””

“Because Nia is the one person who could stop her.””

“Stop her from what?””

Daniel opened another file.

Inside was a copy of a document I had never seen before.

My father’s trust agreement.

I grabbed it.

“How did you get this?””

Daniel watched my reaction.

“You didn’t know?””

“Know what?””

He pointed at a section.

I read it.

And my breathing stopped.

When my father passed away, he left me a trust.

A trust I controlled.

But there was one condition.

A condition I had forgotten about because I never expected it to matter.

The money would transfer fully to Nia when she turned eighteen.

Unless something happened.

Unless I was legally unable to manage it.

I looked up.

“Vanessa knew about this?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because she was planning to become your wife.””

My heart pounded.

“She wanted access.””

Daniel nodded.

“And the only thing standing in her way was your daughter.””

I closed the folder.

My hands were shaking.

For months, I thought Vanessa was trying to remove Nia because she was jealous.

Because she wanted my attention.

Because she didn’t understand being a parent.

But this was worse.

She wasn’t trying to remove my daughter from my wedding.

She was trying to remove my daughter from my life.

My phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

It was Vanessa.

I almost didn’t answer.

Then I did.

“What?””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Ethan, we need to talk.””

“We’re done talking.””

“No.””

A pause.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

I looked at Daniel.

At the evidence.

At the truth.

“Actually, I think I finally do.””

Her voice changed.

“You spoke to Daniel.””

“Yes.””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“He should have stayed out of our lives.””

My stomach dropped.

“Our lives?””

“Yes.””

The confidence returned.

“You and me.””

I looked down at the papers.

“No, Vanessa.””

I stood.

“You and your plan.””

The line went quiet.

Then she said something that made my blood freeze.

“Ask yourself why your father trusted Nia with everything.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Her voice became almost a whisper.

“Because he knew you were too easy to manipulate.””

The call ended.

And I realized something terrifying.

Vanessa wasn’t scared.

May you like

She had been caught.

And she still believed she could win.
