Chapter 7 - THE BLOOD TIES AND THE HIDDEN FAMILY

The words hung in the air like smoke.
"Your father?" I asked softly. "Grace, what are you saying?"
She sat down on the edge of the sofa, her hands folded tightly in her lap, staring at the floor as if seeing ghosts only she could perceive.
"My father worked closely with yours," she said. "He was his chief accountant. His most trusted friend. He discovered Arthur’s embezzlement thirty years ago. He told your father. And then… he died suddenly. Supposedly a boating accident. Weeks later. My mother followed him—broken heart, they said. I was six."
Grace lifted her face. Her eyes were bright with unshed tears, hard with terrible resolve.
"I grew up knowing Arthur Sterling had destroyed both our families. I took the job in your home because I wanted to watch. Because I wanted to protect you. Because I owed my father that much. And then… we fell in love. Before you met Victoria. That summer. And then Victoria stepped in. And I realized… Arthur had arranged for us to be together too. Just to see if he could control it. If he could break it."
My mind reeled. All the pieces locked into place. Grace’s father. Her silence. Her refusal to speak the truth. She hadn’t just been protecting herself and Lily. She had been protecting me from the same fate.
"Arthur killed both our fathers," I said. "And then he watched us fall in love. Watched us have Lily. And decided to destroy us both to keep his secrets buried."
Grace nodded.
"Everything goes back thirty years, Nathan. Every lie. Every death. Every threat. Arthur built his fortune on ruins. And he will bury us all in them before he lets anyone take it away."
I stood up slowly. I walked to the window and looked out across the dark grounds. Somewhere out there, Arthur was making plans. Packing. Running. Or preparing to strike one final, devastating blow.
"Then we do this tonight," I said, turning back to her. "We take his safe-deposit box. We strip him of everything. And then we bring him down for every crime he has ever committed. Against your family. Against mine. Against us."
Grace stood up and came to me. She placed her hands on my chest, right over my heart.

"We do this together. All the way to the end. No more secrets. No more silence. If we fall… we fall together. But if we win… we finally get to live."
