Chapter 20 - THE PROMISE AND THE NEW BEGINNING

I returned home that night. Grace was waiting for me in the hallway, her face anxious. Lily was asleep upstairs.
"He knows," I told her. "And he warned me… others are coming. From deeper than Arthur. From further back."
Grace paled, but she did not break. She reached out and took my hand.
"Let them come," she said. "We have faced shadows before. And we survived."
We stood together in the quiet house, holding hands, listening to the soft sound of our daughter breathing in the room above. The past had stretched its claws across generations, reaching all the way from Arthur to Julian, and now to whoever waited further still in the darkness.
But this time we were ready.
We were not two people hiding in silence. We were a family. We had truth on our side. We had justice. We had a fortune turned into good, turned into protection, turned into power for those who had none. And most of all… we had each other.
I climbed the stairs and stood beside Lily’s bed. She slept deeply, her cheek pillowed on one small hand, utterly safe and unaware. I brushed the hair gently from her forehead.
Whatever comes, I promised silently. Whatever threats. Whatever lies. Whatever shadows rise from the past to claim you… I will stand between you and the darkness. I will give my life before I let anyone hurt you.
Grace joined me at the doorway. She rested her hand on my shoulder, her warmth steady and sure.
"They will try," she whispered. "But we are still here. And we are still together. That is what truly matters."
I turned and pulled her close.
"Yes," I said. "And this time… we meet the future on our own terms. No more secrets. No more fear. Only us."

Outside, the storm had passed. Stars broke through the clouds, bright and clear, shining down on a world that had seen too much pain—but was finally learning how to heal.
Arthur’s war was over. And our peace… had only just begun.
