Chapter 19 - THE CONFRONTATION AT THE CEMETERY

I arranged the meeting at the cemetery where both my father and Grace’s father were buried. Quiet. Open. Surrounded by history.
Julian arrived alone shortly before sunset. Tall. Sharp-featured. His eyes the same cold gray as Arthur’s. He stood by Arthur’s grave, staring at the headstone, his expression impossible to read.
I laid the files on the stone between us. Arthur’s confession. The paternity records. The journal. Every proof of every crime.
"Your father was a brilliant man," I said quietly. "But hatred broke him. He hurt innocent people. He lied. He killed. And he raised you to believe that all of it was justified."
Julian did not look at the files. He kept his gaze fixed on me.
"You took everything," he said. "My father’s name. My inheritance. My future."
"I took nothing," I said. "Arthur lost everything because of his crimes. I took only the truth. And I used what remained to heal the damage he caused. The fortune you want… has already been given away. To children. To families. To people Arthur destroyed."
Julian’s jaw tightened. He reached into his coat. For a heartbeat I thought he held a weapon. Instead he pulled out a single letter. Arthur’s final letter to him, smuggled out of prison weeks before Arthur died.
"He wrote to me," Julian said. "He told me he was wrong. That hatred solves nothing. That the fortune is a curse. That I should let it go."
He looked at me then, his eyes glistening.
"I traveled here determined to ruin you. To take back everything. But reading his words… seeing what he truly became… I realized he was begging me not to become him."
He tossed the letter onto the grave.
"He told me to choose peace. He told me to apologize. And he told me to warn you… that there are others who will not listen to reason. People deeper than him. More dangerous. Who still believe the fortune belongs to the bloodline."
I stepped forward. "Who?"
Julian shook his head.
"Names do not matter. They will come for Lily. They will come for the foundation. They will come for everything you hold dear. Because Arthur told them the fortune would pass to a child not of his blood. And they will not allow it."
He turned to walk away. Then paused.
"Arthur was right about one thing," he said over his shoulder. "Hatred destroys the one who carries it. Protect your daughter. Protect your wife. And do not trust anyone."
May you like
Then he walked away into the gathering darkness, leaving me standing alone between the graves, holding the weight of a new threat I could not yet see.
