Chapter 2 - THE POLICE AND THE THREAT

Grace winced as I helped her stand. Her shoulder was already swelling, darkening into an ugly bruise that spread across her upper arm. I sent Lily into the next room to sit quietly with a storybook, then called my lawyer and the police. While we waited, I found ice packs and pressed one gently against Grace’s injury. She flinched but did not pull away.

"Why didn’t you tell me?" I asked softly, sitting beside her at the kitchen island. "All those years. Why let me marry her?"

Grace stared down at her hands.

"Because Victoria threatened to vanish with Lily," she said quietly. "She had connections, Nathan. Money. Lawyers who could make people disappear. She told me if I breathed a word to you, she would take Lily somewhere no one would ever find us. And I believed her. I was young. I had nothing. And she… she was everything. I was terrified I would lose my daughter before I even got to know her."

I felt sick. Every day I had walked past Grace in the hallway. Every morning she had brought me coffee. Every evening she had smiled politely and looked away while Victoria kissed me goodbye. She had been watching me live a lie with the woman who had stolen her future, all while raising my child alone.

"I will fix this," I promised her. "Whatever Victoria threatened. Whatever she thinks she can do. I will fix every single thing. She will never hurt either of you again. I swear it."

Grace looked up at me, her eyes searching mine.

"She told me something else, Nathan. Before you walked in. She said… she said if Lily ever had your blood, she would never be safe. That your family has secrets. That the fortune you stand to inherit is not just money—it is danger."

I frowned. "What kind of danger?"

"She wouldn’t say. Only that you do not know the whole truth about where your wealth comes from. And that Lily being your daughter changes everything. Because Victoria is not the only one who would benefit if something happened to her."

My blood ran cold. Before I could ask more, sirens wailed in the distance. Minutes later, police officers and an ambulance arrived. I gave my statement. Grace showed them her injuries. Lily sat on my lap and told a very quiet, very serious officer that the lady with the mean face had hit Mommy.

By the time Victoria returned downstairs with two large suitcases, the police were ready to speak with her. She listened to the charges read aloud—assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment, making criminal threats—and laughed. A cold, sharp laugh that sent chills running down my spine.

"You think this sticks?" she said, looking straight at me while the officer handcuffed her. "You think a housekeeper and a toddler can prove anything against me? I have witnesses. I have proof she was stealing. By next week, I will be home. And then we shall see who really pays the price for all of this."

They led her out the front door. Grace sagged against me, letting out a long, shaky breath. But her eyes remained wide and worried.

"She meant it," Grace whispered. "Every word. She is not afraid, Nathan. She is planning something. Something big."

I held her hand.

"Let her try. I have you. I have Lily. And this time… I will be watching every single move she makes."

But as Victoria was driven away in the back of a police car, I remembered what Grace had said about secrets. About danger. About my own family and the fortune I stood to inherit. And I realized with a sinking heart… Victoria was not working alone. She knew things. Dangerous things. And she had allies waiting in the shadows.
