Chapter 16 - THE DISCOVERY IN THE ATTIC

Months later, while cleaning out the attic of our home, Lily found an old, locked chest tucked beneath a dusty window. She dragged it out proudly, announcing that it must hold treasure. We pried it open together, expecting old letters or forgotten keepsakes.
Instead, we found something that stopped our breath.
Beneath layers of yellowed documents and photographs lay a handwritten journal. On the first page, in my father’s handwriting, dated the year Grace’s father died:
*I have done a terrible thing. I pushed too hard. I trusted Arthur too far. And now my oldest friend is dead. I do not know how much Arthur knows. I do not know what he will do. But if anything happens to me… tell Nathan to find Grace. Tell him that the girl who laughs too quietly and loves too deeply… is the only person who will ever truly understand him. And tell him to protect her. Always.*
Grace reached out and traced the words with trembling fingers.
"He knew," she whispered. "Your father knew. Even then. Even before we met."
I turned page after page. My father had suspected Arthur from the very beginning. He had watched him change. Hardened. Grow bitter. And he had written everything down, hoping one day I would read it and understand. Hoping I would be prepared.
On the very last page, written only days before his death:
*If you are reading this, then Arthur has won. For now. But remember this—hatred destroys the one who carries it. Love outlasts everything. Build something new, Nathan. Something better. And do not repeat our mistakes.*
I closed the journal gently. I looked at Grace. At Lily. At the bright, warm room we shared.
"He left us a map," I said quietly. "He showed us exactly where we went wrong. And exactly how to go right."
Grace leaned her head against my shoulder.
May you like
"Then we follow it. Every single day."
