Chapter 18 - THE WITNESS AND THE TRUTH

I tracked every lead. I spoke to every former associate of Arthur’s. I visited contacts, reviewed old files, cross-referenced names and payments and offshore accounts. For weeks I found nothing. Then, from an unexpected source—a retired judge who had once overseen Arthur’s business dealings—I learned something that turned everything upside down.
Arthur had had a son. Older than Victoria. Kept hidden from everyone. Raised in another country. Prepared from birth to reclaim everything Arthur believed the world had stolen from him.
Julian Sterling.
He was the one sending the letters. The one watching our home. The one determined to finish what his father had started.
"He is more dangerous than Arthur ever was," the judge told me gravely. "Arthur wanted revenge. Julian wants justice—his version of it. He believes every penny you hold belongs to him. And he will destroy anyone standing in his way."
I returned home and told Grace. She sat very still while I spoke, her hands folded tightly in her lap.
"Arthur kept him hidden all these years," she said. "He raised him to hate us. To believe we stole his birthright."
"Which means he will not listen to reason," I said. "He will not be bought. He will not be frightened away. He believes he is the hero of this story. And we… we are the villains."
Grace stood up and walked to the window. Rain streaked the glass.
"Then we show him the truth," she said. "Not Arthur’s truth. The real truth. We give him everything Arthur left hidden. Every document. Every confession. Every proof of what Arthur truly was. And then… we ask him to choose. Hatred… or peace."
"And if he chooses hatred?"
Grace turned and looked at me. Her eyes were bright, unafraid.
