Chapter 13 - THE LETTER FROM THE PAST

Three months later, a registered letter arrived at our home. Postmarked from the maximum-security facility where Arthur was serving three consecu

tive life sentences. I hesitated before opening it. Grace stood beside me, her hand resting on my arm.

"You don't have to read it," she said.

"He has the right to be heard one final time," I said. "And I need to know there is nothing left to say."

I broke the seal. The letter was long, written in Arthur’s tight, slanted handwriting. He spoke of his childhood. Of his mother. Of the way my father had cast them aside. Of the anger that had grown inside him until there was room for nothing else. He admitted to twisting facts. To exaggerating my father’s crimes to justify his own. To destroying lives because he could not let go of the past.

And at the very end, he wrote:

*I wanted to destroy everything your father loved. Including you. But you chose differently. You took the power I lusted after and gave it away. You built something new instead of fighting over ruins. In doing so… you defeated me completely. I am sorry for Grace’s father. I am sorry for your father. I am sorry for Victoria. And I am sorry for the little girl who never asked to be born into any of this. Tell Lily… tell her Arthur is sorry. And tell her to choose love over blood. Always.*

I folded the letter slowly. Placed it inside a locked box.

"What does he say?" Grace asked quietly.

"That he finally understands," I said. "That he lost not because we were stronger… but because we chose to be better."

Grace leaned her head against my shoulder.

May you like

"Will you answer him?"

"No," I said. "There
is nothing left to say. We leave the past exactly where it belongs. Behind us."

Grace squeezed my hand gently. Outside the window, Lily laughed as she chased a butterfly across the green lawn. The sun cast golden light over everything, warm and soft and full of promise.

Behind us lay lies, betrayal, bloodshed, and grief. Ahead of us lay only the quiet, ordinary miracle of waking up each morning safe, together, and free.
