Chapter 9: The Brother Nobody Knew
The floor moved beneath Adrian’s feet.
For one terrifying second, he thought the entire basement was collapsing.
Then he realized the truth.
The trapdoor was opening.
The stranger stepped backward as a hidden section of the floor lowered into darkness.
Claire grabbed Adrian’s arm.
“Adrian.””
He didn’t move.
His eyes stayed on the man in front of him.
“Where is my daughter?””
The stranger tilted his head.
“You still think this is about Mia.””
Adrian’s voice became dangerous.
“It is.””
“No.””
The man looked around the old basement.
“This is about everything your family buried.””
Thunder shook the building.
Adrian tightened his fists.
“You’re Daniel’s brother.””
The stranger smiled slightly.
“Half-brother.””
Claire stared.
“Your father had another child?””
The man laughed quietly.
“Your father had many secrets.””
Adrian felt sick.
“What is your name?””
The man hesitated.
Then answered:
“Ethan.””
The name meant nothing.
But the way he said it did.
Like he had been waiting years for Adrian to hear it.
“Where is Mia?””
Ethan looked toward the hidden opening.
“Safe.””
“That's not an answer.””
“It is the only answer you’re getting.””
Adrian stepped forward.
Claire stopped him.
“Don’t.””
Ethan watched them.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“You protect her.””
Adrian frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Ethan looked at Claire.
“Your father never protected anyone.””
The words hit harder than Adrian expected.
“What did he do?””
Ethan’s smile disappeared.
“He erased people.””
The basement went quiet.
Adrian looked at the old shelves.
The files.
The photographs.
The hidden recordings.
“You were in these records.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted proof that I existed.””
Claire looked confused.
“Why would he hide his own son?””
Ethan laughed.
“Because I was the son he was ashamed of.””
Adrian shook his head.
“I don't believe you.””
Ethan looked at him.
“You should.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel already knows.””
Adrian’s phone was still connected.
Daniel was silent on the other end.
Adrian lifted it.
“Daniel?””
No response.
“Daniel, answer me.””
Finally, Daniel spoke.
Quietly.
“I know.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
The betrayal hurt worse because it came from someone he loved.
“You knew about him?””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
“Since Dad’s funeral.””
Adrian stared.
“Eight years?””
“Yes.””
Claire whispered, “Eight years…”
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“You knew about him.””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“I didn't know what to do.””
“You knew he existed.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Ethan watched him.
“They always do.””
Adrian looked at him.
“What do you want?””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“I want the truth.””
“You kidnapped my daughter.””
“I moved her.””
“You terrified her.””
“I showed her something.””
“What?””
Ethan looked toward the stairs.
“Something your family refused to tell her.””
Adrian’s voice rose.
“Where is she?””
A sound came from above.
A small voice.
“Daddy?””
Adrian froze.
“Mia?””
He looked toward the staircase.
“Mia!””
He ran.
But Ethan blocked him.
Adrian stopped inches away.
“Move.””
Ethan didn’t.
“Listen first.””
“My daughter is upstairs.””
“And if you rush up there, you’ll make the same mistake your father made.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“What mistake?””
“Trusting the wrong person.””
The lights flickered.
Then came another voice.
“Adrian.””
Everyone froze.
Sarah.
She stood at the top of the stairs.
Her clothes were dirty.
Her face was exhausted.
But she was alive.
Adrian pushed past Ethan.
“Sarah!””
He reached her in seconds.
He pulled her into his arms.
She held on tightly.
“I’m sorry.””
“You’re alive.””
“I tried to get back.””
“What happened?””
Sarah looked past him.
At Ethan.
At Daniel’s voice still coming from the phone.
At the hidden room.
Then she whispered:
“I found him.””
Adrian stepped back.
“You knew Ethan?””
Sarah nodded.
“I found the files.””
“Your father’s files?””
“Yes.””
“And you knew about him?””
“Yes.””
Adrian looked hurt.
“You too?””
Sarah’s eyes filled.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Everyone says that.””
Sarah looked down.
“I know.””
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Mia ran from behind Sarah.
“Daddy!””
Adrian dropped to his knees.
She crashed into his arms.
He held her like he would never let go again.
“I’m sorry.””
Mia looked at him.
“For what?””
“For not listening.””
She hugged him tighter.
“You came.””
“Yes.””
“You found me.””
“Yes.””
“Then you're okay.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
The words were simple.
But they destroyed him.
Behind them, Ethan watched silently.
Claire approached Sarah.
“Where were you?””
Sarah looked at Ethan.
“He found me before I could leave.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted me to see this.””
She pointed toward the hidden room.
“What?””
“The rest of the files.””
Daniel’s voice came through the phone.
“Sarah.””
She looked at the phone.
“You need to tell him.””
Adrian stood.
“Tell me what?””
Sarah hesitated.
Then she reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small folder.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Adrian looked down.
The name at the top made him freeze.
*Ethan Morgan.*
Father:
*Thomas Morgan.*
Mother:
*Unknown.*
Adrian looked at Sarah.
“This proves nothing.””
She opened the folder again.
There was another document.
A medical record.
Then another.
Then a letter.
Adrian read the handwriting.
His father's handwriting.
*I failed my first son. I will not fail again.*
His hands trembled.
Ethan looked away.
Adrian looked at him.
“Dad knew.””
“Yes.””
“He knew you existed.””
“Yes.””
“Why hide you?””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Because my mother was someone he abandoned.””
Sarah spoke quietly.
“She worked for your father.””
Adrian looked at her.
“She was his assistant.””
Ethan nodded.
“When she became pregnant, he denied everything.””
Claire shook her head.
“And Daniel knew?””
Ethan looked toward the phone.
“Daniel found out years later.””
Daniel’s voice came through.
“I was seventeen.””
Adrian listened.
“Dad told me never to speak about Ethan.””
“Why?””
“Because he said Ethan was dangerous.””
Ethan laughed.
“Of course he did.””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“Are you saying you did all this because of him?””
“No.””
“Then why Mia?””
Ethan’s face changed.
For the first time, the anger disappeared.
“I didn't want to hurt her.””
“Then why?””
“Because she was the only person who still remembered.””
Adrian frowned.
“Remembered what?””
Ethan looked at Mia.
“Your father.””
Mia looked confused.
“My grandpa?””
“Yes.””
“He was nice.””
Ethan looked away.
“He was not always nice.””
Adrian said nothing.
Ethan continued.
“Your father knew someone was watching Mia.””
“Who?””
Ethan looked at Daniel.
Then Vanessa.
Then Adrian.
“The person who started all of this.””
A silence followed.
Adrian looked around.
“Who?””
Ethan slowly pointed upward.
Everyone followed his gaze.
To the ceiling.
To the floor above them.
A sound came from the hallway.
A familiar voice.
“Adrian?””
Everyone froze.
Vanessa.
No.
Not Vanessa.
Someone else.
Someone they thought was gone.
Someone who shouldn't have been there.
Sarah whispered:
“No.””
The footsteps grew closer.
Then the person appeared at the top of the stairs.
Adrian stared.
His face went completely blank.
Because standing there was the one person nobody expected.
His father’s old assistant.
The woman who had supposedly moved away years ago.
The woman who knew every secret in the family.
The woman who had helped raise Mia.
Adrian whispered her name.
“Rebecca.””
Rebecca smiled.
“Hello, Adrian.””
Claire stepped forward.
“You know her?””
Sarah nodded slowly.
“She was the one.””
Adrian looked at her.
“The one what?””
Sarah’s voice trembled.
“The one who was watching Mia.””
Rebecca’s smile faded.
Then she said:
“You finally figured it out.””
She looked at Mia.
“But you’re too late.””
Adrian pulled Mia behind him.
“What did you do?””
Rebecca tilted her head.
“I did what your father should have done.””
“What?””
“Protected the family.””
Adrian stared.
“By hurting my daughter?””
Rebecca smiled.
“No.””
She looked directly at him.
“By making sure everyone who lied to her finally paid the price.””
Then she held up a small remote.
The lights in the basement turned red.
And a recording began playing.
May you like
A recording of Adrian’s own voice.
Saying something he had never said.
