Chapter 3: The Message From Mom

The name on the screen seemed to make the air disappear.

*MOM.*

Adrian stared at it.

Claire stared at it.

Vanessa looked as though someone had opened a door beneath her feet.

Mia, too young to understand the weight of the word, only looked up at them.

“Is Mommy home?”” she asked.

Nobody answered.

Adrian slowly took the phone from Claire.

“What does this mean?””

Claire shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Adrian, don't watch it.””

He turned toward her.

“Why?””

“Because whoever sent it could have edited something.””

“You don't know that.””

“I know people can manipulate videos.””

“Then we'll see.””

He tapped the message.

The screen went black.

A second later, a video began.

It showed the same house.

The same living room.

But it was clearly recorded several hours before the party.

The room was empty.

Then someone entered from the kitchen.

A woman.

She wore gray sweatpants, an oversized sweater, and her dark hair was pulled into a loose knot.

Mia gasped.

“Mommy.””

Adrian's fingers tightened around the phone.

It was Sarah.

Mia's mother.

She had told Adrian she would be working late and probably wouldn't make the party.

But there she was on the screen.

Inside their house.

Standing beside the camera.

Sarah looked directly into the lens.

“If you're watching this,” she said quietly, “something went wrong.””

Adrian's face changed.

Mia moved closer.

“Mommy?””

The recording continued.

Sarah took a breath.

“I didn't want to scare Mia. I didn't want to accuse anyone without proof. But I've been noticing things.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Sarah continued.

“Things disappearing from Mia's room. Her coming home upset. Saying she didn't want to be alone with Vanessa. And every time I asked why, she said she was fine.””

Claire glanced at Mia.

The little girl's eyes were fixed on the screen.

Sarah's voice grew softer.

“She kept saying one sentence.””

The room was silent.

Sarah looked toward the doorway.

“She kept saying, ‘Aunt Vanessa gets angry when Daddy isn't looking.’”

Vanessa's face went white.

“That is not true.””

Adrian turned toward her.

“You told me Mia was imagining things.””

“I said she was confused.””

“You said she was lying.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I didn't mean—”

“Quiet.””

The single word stopped her.

On the video, Sarah continued.

“I wanted to believe there was another explanation. Maybe Mia was scared of something else. Maybe she had misunderstood. So I decided to leave a camera here.””

The image shifted.

Sarah held up a tiny black memory card.

“The camera isn't only for today. It's been recording whenever it detects movement.””

Claire whispered, “She knew.””

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

Sarah's recording went on.

“I am sending this because I may not be able to get home in time.””

She paused.

Then she looked directly into the lens.

“Adrian, if you're watching this, please don't make Mia prove herself ten times before you believe her.””

His eyes filled instantly.

Mia looked at him.

“Daddy?””

He knelt beside her.

“I’m here.””

Sarah's voice continued.

“She doesn't need a courtroom. She needs her father.””

Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.

Vanessa turned away.

Sarah finished the message.

“And Adrian… don't trust the person who tells you a child is too young to know what happened.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Mia asked softly, “Did Mommy know?””

Adrian looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Before my birthday?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

He pulled her into his arms.

“Because she wanted to protect you.””

Mia buried her face against his chest.

Claire watched them.

Vanessa stood several feet away, rigid and silent.

Then Adrian looked up.

“Where is Sarah?””

Vanessa immediately answered.

“At work.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Vanessa turned.

“What?””

“That's not what she told me.””

Adrian stood.

“You said Sarah left town yesterday.””

“She did.””

“Then why was she in this house last night?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I don't know.””

Claire's voice sharpened.

“You're saying you didn't know Sarah came home?””

“I don't track her schedule.””

Adrian stared at Vanessa.

“You told me she was staying at the hotel.””

“I thought she was.””

“Did you?””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“What is that supposed to mean?””

“I'm asking a question.””

“And I'm answering it.””

“No. You're avoiding it.””

Vanessa's hands began shaking.

She tucked them beneath her arms.

“I don't deserve this.””

Claire stepped toward her.

“What exactly do you deserve?””

Vanessa looked at Mia.

“For years I've helped this family.””

Claire glanced at the ruined white dress.

“And today?””

“I made a mistake.””

“You hurt her.””

“I lost my temper.””

“You blamed her.””

“I panicked.””

“You lied.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was afraid.””

Adrian's voice was cold.

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at him.

But before she could answer, the phone buzzed again.

Everyone turned.

A second message.

This one wasn't a video.

It was a text.

*Don't let Vanessa leave the house.*

Adrian stared at the words.

Underneath them was another line.

*There is one more recording.*

Claire looked at him.

“Open it.””

Vanessa backed toward the doorway.

“No.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You're not going anywhere.””

“I have to go.””

“Why?””

“I need air.””

“You can get air here.””

“This is insane.””

“Then stay and prove it.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

She suddenly looked toward the front door.

Adrian noticed.

“So you do want to leave.””

“No.””

“You just looked at the door.””

“I was startled.””

Claire stepped beside Adrian.

“Nobody is buying this anymore.””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“I am not some criminal!””

“No one called you one,” Claire said.

“You're treating me like one!””

“Then act like an innocent person and stay.””

Vanessa glared at her.

Then Mia's voice came from behind Adrian.

“Aunt Vanessa?””

Everyone turned.

Mia was still holding the edge of her father's shirt.

“Why did you tell me nobody would believe me?””

Vanessa froze.

The question was so small.

So simple.

It landed harder than shouting ever could.

Mia looked at her with tear-filled eyes.

“I was telling the truth.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Adrian stepped in front of his daughter.

“Don't speak to her.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“You've already chosen her side.””

“This isn't sides.””

“You believe whatever you see on a screen.””

“I believe my daughter.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You didn't five minutes ago.””

Adrian flinched.

She had found the one wound nobody wanted touched.

He looked at Mia.

“I was wrong.””

Mia stared at him.

Adrian crouched in front of her.

“I should have believed you the first time.””

“Why didn't you?””

His throat tightened.

“Because I thought I was being fair.””

Mia wiped her cheek.

“You weren't.””

He nodded.

“No. I wasn't.””

She stepped into his arms.

He held her tightly.

Over his shoulder, Claire saw something move behind Vanessa.

The back door.

Vanessa was edging toward it.

Claire blocked the path.

“Where are you going?””

Vanessa stopped.

“Move.””

“No.””

“Claire.””

“No.””

Adrian stood.

“Vanessa, step away from the door.””

She stared at the three of them.

Then she suddenly laughed.

Not loudly.

Not happily.

Just once.

A strange, broken sound.

“You really think you've figured everything out.””

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at the phone.

“You've seen one recording.””

“And another one is waiting.””

“You don't know what happened before that.””

Claire's expression hardened.

“Then tell us.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Adrian stepped toward her.

“Tell me now.””

She looked directly at him.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Then ask Sarah why she was here last night.””

Adrian went still.

“Why?””

Vanessa gave him a faint smile.

“Because she wasn't supposed to come home.””

Claire frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked toward the phone.

“The last recording will show you.””

Adrian immediately opened the second file.

The loading circle appeared.

Five percent.

Twenty percent.

Forty.

Vanessa watched the screen.

Sixty.

Seventy-five.

Then the video loaded.

The camera showed the hallway at 11:52 p.m.

Sarah walked into view.

She was alone.

She looked frightened.

She carried a small envelope.

She placed it beneath the camera.

Then she heard something behind her.

Sarah froze.

Slowly, she turned.

Someone was standing at the end of the hallway.

The figure stepped into the light.

Mia gasped.

Claire whispered the name.

“Vanessa.””

But Vanessa was staring at the screen with tears streaming down her face.

On the recording, Sarah took one step backward.

“You weren't supposed to be here,” she whispered.

Vanessa on the screen answered:

May you like

“Neither were you.””

And then the video suddenly cut to black.
