Thinking

Chapter 1: The Dress

Mia thought this would be the happiest day of her life.

At six years old, she believed birthdays were the closest thing the world had to magic. There were balloons taped to the ceiling, pink ribbons hanging from the staircase, and a giant white cake covered in strawberries and sugar roses.

Most importantly, everyone she loved was there.

Mia stood in the middle of the living room in a beautiful white dress, turning slowly while her cousins clapped.

“Look at me!”” she said, lifting the skirt with both hands.

“You look like a princess,” Claire told her.

Mia beamed.

“A real one?””

“A very real one.””

From the kitchen, Vanessa laughed.

“Of course she does,” Vanessa called.

“I picked that dress myself.””

Mia spun toward her aunt.

“Do you really like it, Aunt Vanessa?””

Vanessa walked into the room holding a tray of cupcakes. She wore a fitted blue dress and a smile that looked perfect from a distance.

“I love it,” Vanessa said.

“And I expect you to keep it clean.””

Mia nodded seriously.

“I will.””

“You promise?””

“I promise!””

Everyone laughed.

For a few seconds, the room felt completely safe.

Then the front door opened, and Claire glanced toward the hallway.

“Adrian’s here.””

Mia’s eyes widened.

“Daddy!””

She ran toward the door.

Adrian barely had time to set down the gift bag in his hand before his daughter crashed into him.

“There’s my birthday girl.””

“You came!””

“I told you I would.””

Mia wrapped her arms around his waist.

“You're late.””

Adrian smiled.

“Three minutes.””

“That’s very late.””

“Then I guess I owe you a gift.””

Mia gasped dramatically.

“A giant one?””

“Possibly.””

“Bigger than me?””

“Definitely not.””

She giggled.

Behind them, Vanessa watched the exchange from across the room.

Her smile disappeared for just a moment.

Claire noticed.

But before she could say anything, Vanessa raised the tray.

“Cake time!””

The guests cheered.

Mia clapped her hands.

Adrian led her toward the table while everyone gathered around. Six candles stood in the center of the cake, each flame trembling in the air-conditioning.

“Make a wish,” Claire whispered.

Mia closed her eyes.

She wished for something simple.

For Daddy to smile more.

For Mommy to come home early from work.

For Aunt Vanessa to stop looking angry all the time.

And for today to last forever.

She blew out the candles.

Everyone cheered.

The music grew louder. Phones came out. Someone started recording.

Mia laughed as Adrian cut the cake.

Then Vanessa stepped toward her.

“Mia,” she said, “come here for a second.””

Mia looked at her father.

“Can I have my cake first?””

“In a minute,” Vanessa said.

“I just—”

“I said come here.””

The warmth in Vanessa’s voice was gone.

Mia followed her anyway.

She trusted adults.

That was what children were supposed to do.

Vanessa led her toward the hallway beside the staircase, away from the guests.

Claire watched them disappear around the corner.

Something about Vanessa’s face made her uneasy.

She started to follow.

Then she heard Mia scream.

The sound sliced through the music.

Everyone froze.

A glass dropped in the kitchen.

Claire ran.

“What happened?””

She reached the hallway just in time to see Mia stumble backward.

The little girl’s white dress was covered in bright red frosting.

It streaked across the bodice and dripped onto the floor like blood.

Mia stared down at herself.

Her mouth trembled.

“I didn’t do it.””

Vanessa stood beside her.

Her hands were clean.

Her expression was furious.

“Look what you’ve done,” Vanessa snapped.

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't.””

“You knocked the bowl out of my hands!””

“I didn't!””

“You were running around like a wild animal.””

Claire stopped.

“Mia?””

The little girl turned toward her.

“Aunt Claire…”

Her voice broke.

Claire rushed forward and knelt.

“What happened?””

Mia grabbed the front of Claire’s dress.

“She spilled it on me.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“That's a lie.””

Mia shook her head hard.

“No!””

The room began filling behind Claire.

Guests crowded into the hallway.

Adrian pushed through them.

“What happened?””

Vanessa turned to him first.

“Your daughter just ruined her birthday dress.””

Adrian stared at Mia.

She was shaking.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

“I was carrying the frosting bowl,” Vanessa said.

“She came running around the corner and slammed into me.””

Mia cried harder.

“No, Daddy. I didn’t.””

Vanessa sighed.

“Adrian, she's excited. She’s six. She doesn’t understand what she did.””

“I know what I did!”” Mia shouted through her tears.

“I didn’t touch you!””

The room went quiet.

Vanessa's eyebrows lifted.

“See? She’s already yelling.””

Claire looked at Vanessa.

“She isn't yelling at you. She's scared.””

Vanessa gave a sharp laugh.

“Scared? Of what?””

Mia pressed herself against Claire.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Mia, tell your father the truth.””

“I am!””

“Then why were you in the hallway?””

“I wanted to see the flowers.””

“There were no flowers in the hallway.””

“Yes, there were!””

Vanessa looked around at the guests.

“Do you hear this?””

A few people exchanged uncomfortable glances.

One of Mia's uncles whispered, “Maybe she misunderstood.””

That was when Mia's face changed.

She had expected someone to comfort her.

Instead, she saw people looking at her like she had become the problem.

Her lower lip trembled.

“But I didn't do it.””

Adrian crouched in front of her.

“Mia, look at me.””

She did.

“Did you knock into Vanessa?””

“No.””

“Did you touch the bowl?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

Mia stared at him in disbelief.

“You don't believe me?””

Adrian's face tightened.

“I’m trying to understand.””

“But I told you.””

“I know.””

“You’re asking again.””

The little girl's voice became smaller.

Claire looked at Adrian.

“She's telling you what happened.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“Claire, you're making this worse.””

Claire stood.

“No. I'm making sure someone listens.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“This is my mistake for trying to help with the party.””

Claire pointed at Mia's dress.

“Then explain why Mia says you threw the frosting.””

“I didn't throw anything.””

“You were alone with her.””

“So?””

Claire took a breath.

“So why is a six-year-old crying while you're completely calm?””

Vanessa laughed without humor.

“Because I'm an adult.””

“That doesn't answer the question.””

The argument drew everyone's attention.

Mia stood between them, clutching the ruined fabric of her dress.

Adrian rose slowly.

“Enough.””

Vanessa turned to him.

“Adrian, I did nothing wrong.””

Mia stared at her father.

For one second, she seemed hopeful.

Then Vanessa said quietly, “You know how difficult she can be when she wants attention.””

Mia's face went pale.

Claire saw it immediately.

“No,” Claire said.

“Don't do that.””

“Do what?”” Vanessa asked.

“Turn this into a story about Mia's behavior.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I’m not.””

“You just did.””

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

“Everybody, please.””

Mia's breathing became shallow.

The room suddenly felt enormous.

Too many adults.

Too many voices.

Too many eyes.

She looked at her father again.

“Daddy…”

Adrian stepped toward her.

“What?””

“I didn't ruin my birthday.””

His expression softened.

“I know you're upset.””

“No.””

Mia wiped her cheeks with the backs of her hands.

“I mean... I didn't do it.””

Adrian opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, Vanessa spoke.

“She did.””

Claire turned toward her.

“Vanessa.””

“What?””

“You need to stop.””

Vanessa stared back.

Then, for the first time, a crack appeared in her confidence.

It vanished quickly.

“Fine,” she said.

“Ask Mia where she was standing.””

Claire frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa pointed toward the staircase.

“There was a camera on the shelf facing this hallway.””

Adrian looked sharply at her.

“A camera?””

Vanessa nodded.

“The security camera.””

Claire followed her gaze.

There was, indeed, a small black camera tucked onto a shelf near the staircase.

Adrian stared at it.

“Does it record?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

For the first time all afternoon, she seemed genuinely caught off guard.

“I... I think so.””

Claire stepped closer.

“Then we'll know exactly what happened.””

Vanessa went silent.

Mia looked up at Claire.

“Will it show Daddy the truth?””

Claire took her hand.

“It should.””

Adrian reached for his phone.

“I'm checking it now.””

Vanessa suddenly moved toward him.

“Wait.””

Everyone noticed.

Adrian stopped.

“Why?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because the camera isn't connected.””

Claire stared at her.

“You knew that awfully quickly.””

“I set it up.””

“Then you know how it works.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Adrian looked from her to the camera.

Then his phone buzzed.

He glanced down.

A notification had appeared.

*New device detected: Birthday Gift Camera.*

Adrian frowned.

“What is this?””

Mia's eyes widened.

“What camera?””

Adrian turned toward the gift bag he had brought into the house.

And suddenly, Claire remembered the tiny box Mia had begged to open.

A birthday present wrapped in silver paper.

A present Adrian had not bought.

A present someone else had quietly placed on the table before the party began.

Adrian walked toward it.

May you like

Behind him, Vanessa whispered, “Don't open that.””

And everyone heard her.
